I also hate to see Ken go, and it was traumatic when Buck died from colic. Just please God, may Ken NEVER end up in the slaughter pipeline as so many draft horses do! He is an older horse, and whomever buys him may have to make a hard decision about his end of life eventually. After many years of loyal excellent service, he should not ever face the kill pens! Look up Fletcher Farms, where they have rescued 69 draft horses from slaughter and there are others like Gentle Giants. I wish there were a way that we could keep up with Ken and his life with the new owner!

As a Old Horseman from Atlantic Canada, I whole heartily agree with Jim and Brenda on their decision to sell the 2 fillies Bree and June to an experienced horsemen or horsewomen who would be able to develop sometime and invest a few years of training in them Both the Filliies have had some great ground training and have great barn manners as well. . I could in a few years the full sisters making a decent team of mares. As far as Ken the Percheron Gelding is concerned, if a retired person who would be looking for a well trained and good natured driving or garden horse Ken would fit the bill perfectly. Jim is right Ken needs a bit semi daily work to keep the celienosis in check. With Jim's busy work schedule logging and farming . The 2 teams of Bill & Duke and Baron & Earl are definitely suffiecent to do the work . Also Lady has the new foal coming in the spring. It's really important that Jim and Brenda keep focused on their future plans.

I always find it difficult to get rid of your own animals. Despite everything, you have built a bond with them. It is a little easier with the two youngest. There the personal bond is a little more tenuous. And Lady still has time to appoint successors. I can also understand the choice with Ken. Ken is an extremely good colleague for his new owner. Ken has the quality to teach you as a person how to deal and work with horses. You don't have to teach Ken something, no Ken teaches you something. And if you, as the new owner, understand that and want to see that. Well then you have the best team around... Jim and Family, I wish you the best of luck with your sales plans. And hope for a new addition from Lady.

So glad you are healing well. In this life there is always change and change is usually for the best in the long term. I know it is hard to make these decisions, but it is best for all involved and I know you will only let the horses go to people who will love and take care of them. You would never give them up, just to get rid of them. You both have too much integrity. But as we age, we also need to do what is right for ourselves and our animals. i loved you guys with the care and talk you did about how great ken was and the fillies. But we have 18head and are in our 60s. we've been in horses all our lives. We knew when you got hurt you would do this. you're afraid you'll get hurt again. we understand the fillies going. But not KEN. Whoever gets him will over work him or he will be junk horse. Once in awhile worked or kid ridden. One limp and he's gone. People don't put money in old horses. you're getting rid of him because he doesn't go fast enough and he's getting older. Jim so are you. He's never let you down. Don't let him down and don't crush all of us as Brenda calls him KENNY. we love him. His black coat is beautiful and so is he. God bless him. If you need money to feed him say so and I'm sure we all could help. Just don't be that guy who gets rid of the one who has helped you with those you "trained". He helped most of all and they learned from experience.

I think that Jim's difficult decision is based on common sense; I am fairly certain that Jim and Brenda will be very careful in selecting who will get to buy the horses. Just like you I was sad to hear the Ken was part of the horses he is considering to sell. My only concern is that someone takes him in and, once lameness comes back, ends up selling him at auction where he will certainly end up in the slaughter pipeline. I am not in a position to understand what it is like to make such a decision but I wish Jim could consider having Ken go to a retirement sanctuary if there is such a place near him. The only problem with that is that one usually has to pay to place the horse in one of those. Gentle Giants (Maryland), Pony Tales Refuge and many others all make sure that future owners are vetted before adoption and they keep track of the adopters. It is a difficult choice no matter what one does.
