The thing about JR's comments is that Hunter was around 40 years old at the time and had been in the WWE for 14 years. He was basically at the end of the career for any normal wrestling and JR is talking about him like he is an immature kid at the time. If you are married to the bosses daughter and 40 years old while burying other talent like Jericho & Booker, that isn't a maturity issue. Its a personality issue.

Underrated character? He was in both incarnations of DX, the first one with Shawn essentially kickstarting the Attitude Era, then DX 2.0 was second only to nWo. Then he gave the interview with Ross to become “the Game” in the midst of the AE. There were plenty of people above him until he became the top heel, but I just disagree he was underrated during that period. He was doing pretty big things.

Hogan didn't marry the bosses daughter to get where he was. Dude was a legit draw in his prime he was top dog. He helped, better or worse, make pro wrestling what it is today. I'm not a fan but I won't deny the obvious. HHH? Decent for a guy his size. He could have a good match with a good opponent but he couldn't carry a match. He was never going to make the match any better than the guy across from him could allow. That's a mouthful but there are some guys who can elevate others. He's not that. His promos? A smirk is not a promo. Growling, might be what some people like but I was never impressed. Not saying he's the worst. He could carry his end of a feud but it was more the other guy if I even cared.

To me it goes to show that Triple H was basically the kind of guy who used his influences to bury people he dislikes and prop up his friends and protégés. Because despite his many many unforgivable burials, he also is responsible for turning Batista, Orton, and The Shield into megastars, and he had three good matches with the Undertaker with the last one being absolutely excellent and having the perfect opportunity to believably end the streak with the Superkick/Pedigree combo that was instead used to cement Undertaker as invincible instead (which Vince forgot about instantly in favor of putting over up and coming obscure small time talent Brock Lesnar). So in the end, it’s hard for me to completely hate him because for as much as he took, he also did give back a fair amount.

Shawn, Nash and Hunter were all rewarded for bad behaviour over the years, to say nothing of how much Hogan got away with in the 80s and 90s. If you can't deal with the egos of the talent then you share partial responsibility for the toxic behavior. WCW during the nWo era thru the Russo era to the death of the company was an even more extreme example of this ugly dynamic.

I'm a HHH fan and you only have to watch the match he had with Steiner to understand his mindset back then. He wasn't as bad as Cena at destroying competition and making everyone but himself look terrible, but watch how he wrestles in that match. Sandbagging and just generally being out of place to make Scotty look like crap. That era of HHH was his worst, and it sucks that the "big stars" of that time were so keen on promoting themselves and burying everyone else because today's landscape would likely be a lot richer had we not suffered through a decade of kneecapped upstarts (Nexus, Spirit Squad, etc.) and castrated non-homegrown stars (Steiner, Bagwell, Book at first, etc.). The Invasion era should've been the tide to lift all boats but it was a bunch of petty bullshit that IMO wrecked the industry.

@@dxfifa Cena sold t-shirts. The lack of arena sellouts began when he was the "star" and only got worse over time because of the politics that kept him in place.

@@timboslice9071 Love him or hate him, Cena was WWE's top draw for a long time. This is hard cash, not politics. John Cena never received favourable treatment, at least not before he became a top guy. He was an afterthought of the OVW 2002 class. WWE saw more in Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, and Batista than him. Hell, he was very nearly released. He never got pushed out the gate (Brock Lesnar) or picked to go to RAW to work a program with HHH and Ric Flair (Orton and Batista) to help get him over, no, he was on SmackDown organically growing in popularity and moving up the card, and that's because he had charisma and knew how to connect with the crowd. He was the best wrestler to touch a mic since The Rock left. Orton didn't work out as a babyface for numerous reasons (one being that he simply suits being a heel 100x better) and when the choice was made between Cena and Batista around '05, he'd earned it. I have no doubt some things would've went unfairly against Batista at the time, like his age, but Cena was simply the better prospect. The real shame about Cena's career is that he never got a good heel run after Dr. of Thuganomics (which btw was something he wanted). It was most profitable to make him the Hulk Hogan the 2000s/2010s, so that's how he was used (Super Cena, etc etc), I think if he'd been given more diversity in roles, he would've been a lot better. Politics, if anything, stifled him. Stone Cold, btw, has said that John Cena could've succeeded in the Attitude Era.

HHH was the guy who worked with the GUY. HHH always thought he was bigger than Austin and Rock.

I think he thought the guys he didn't put over were beneath him... Steiner and Goldberg were but jericho and booker t were on his level... Rvd proved to be a screw up and a risk as champion.. I think he saw HBK again in Rvd so he tried to block it. Everyone was against new guys coming over it seems so I doubt his vocal opinion wasn't consigned. If you had one of the last big spots in the business you would protect it from all comers and you would not be light with your critic. People seem to discount he worked with the most dysfunctional group of guys coming into the business... He never worked with any of them but Shawn long term and Nash a little bit. There is no program between him and pac or him and hall. I think even though they are his friends he looked for those traits to keep guys out of the top spots that were similar because they could either crack under pressure and the schedule or get caught up in some drama that would hur the company. That group that left him to be punished probably taught him a lot. He had to rebuild himself and once he ascended finally he did not let go of that spot. I can't see him having the final say vs booker though. Seems like because he had not resigned or committed that they didn't decide to give him the belt. He may have won otherwise but the negotiations period sounded like he was paranoid about the direction his character and that may have rubbed folks wrong in the back and made them favor the more dedicated triple h. He could have left and not endured his burial so I'm sure that Vince feels he owed him so they gave him pretty long heel title runs. He almost makes any face look good against him because fans just carry this disdain for him when in most cases you wouldn't beat the heel unless you had a guy in line for that spot who was going to be bigger or better than that heel. He eventually puts benoit Orton and Cena over no problem... Better appeal and/or better wrestlers. Then he also puts batista bryan and reigns over another set of big name stars. The monster had to be big enough to elevate the face that beat him and most times it worked with him just being as much of an ass he could muster on screen. Winning only elevated the whole status of the title because you got to a point you knew he would find a way to win but you wanted him to lose so bad that you got behind any face opposing him which was the whole goal.

Triple H was the top heal in the attitude era. The fact that all them grown men in the comments still hate him 20 years later proves he was legit.

looooooooool that's not why we hate him, we hate him because he deliberately buried the careers of great wrestlers who could have gone further and even more over with the crowd which would be good for the fans and for business but instead we were stuck with Triple H as the main guy on Raw people got sick of it at least put some real stars like Jericho, Booker T and RVD over

Jericho's gone on record saying that he and Triple H are close friends nowadays, and that their problems mostly stemmed from the Monday Night Wars being real and Jericho saying some things he shouldn't have. Even he's said that had he been working for WWF in 1999 and a guy like himself came in saying and doing what he did, he's probably dislike the guy too. I've never heard Jericho say anything bad in regards to Triple H around 2007/2008, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say all that "reporting" is BS. Triple H and Jericho may not have liked each other around that time, but they also worked really well with each other and enjoyed working together. Main eventers look out for themselves. That's just the way it is.

i think wwe did right by buring rvd and booker t ,why becasue they couldnt handle running wwe title back then , look at rvd he couldnt even hold it in 2005 without gettting in trouble and booker t needed a rididcolous gimmick to get his world belt.

Hall never buried anyone in the 90s. Nash and HBK did that. When the 123kid beat Hall on Raw it was Hall’s idea to put him over when it was originally supposed to be a Razor squash match.
