It was hated because it overstayed its welcome and didn't make sense to be held by champions other than John Cena. But the Spinner isn't as sacriligeous as next two title designs that came after it. The Spinner belt, despite its posturing as a belt designed to go against the norm, actually respected tradition by at least incorporating an Eagle in its design which along with a Globe is a staple of world titles in the WWE. The next two belts that replaced the spinner are even worse as they are just WWE logos without anything adorning it. They look like something a 5-year old drew, cut and pasted together out of discarded cereal boxes.

Most people associate the Spinner with John Cena & rightfully so has he introduced it. But for me, when I think of the Spinner I associate it with Randy Orton. The Spinner was the belt Randy Orton held when he really hit his stride & really started getting traction as an awesome heel once he broke away from the arrogant kid/legend killer gimmick & evolved into the Viper gimmick.

Where Cena's "Spinner belt" damaged the prestige of the World Champion title, the prestige of nearly all of the title belts died the moment the Rock unveiled that new belt and the WWE went with that look for most of the other titles as well.

Growing up watching the Ruthless Aggression era, I thought the spinner belt was the coolest thing lol. Looking back at the history of professional wrestling though, I can see now why the old school fans would dislike it. Adding a gimmick to the belt just further decreases the legitimacy of the sport.

Tbh the spinner belt only looks bad if older wrestlers like hhh, Michaels and undertaker were to hold it, but it looked great on guys like cena ( who it was made for ) randy orton ( 09 orton especially ), edge, Jeff hardy snd cm punk because it fit the younger look while the world heavyweight championship was more for the veterans and it’s a shame we never got attitude era vs ruthless aggression properly but then I wonder which side would edge be on because he debut in the attitude era but hit his stride in ruthless aggression

The thing with gimmick belts is they are just a cheap way to make the title yours. The truly great champions wear the real title proudly and make that title theirs. Like when I think of the classic winged eagle belt, thats Bret Hart's belt. When I think of the big circular WWF title, that's The Rock's belt. When I think of the original WWE title, thats Eddie Guerrero's belt. When I think of the big gold WCW belt, I think of Ric Flair or Triple H. The great champions make themselves a part of the title's history, so that future champions can inherit that legacy. And the greatest ones become associated with that belt. If you have to mess with the belt to make it yours, thats just a shortcut to cementing your legacy.

Like when Lance Storm had three titles in WCW, and put the Canadian flag on each one because he was disrespecting them, he was trying to get that rise that the spinner belt got out of JR. Or one that seems rather innocuous- when WALTER became NXT UK champion, they made a new belt and presented it to him, and the belt looked better and was bigger, but it still wasn't specific to him. I'm not even a big fan of wrestlers having their name on the belt- you are just holding the belt until someone better than you comes along and takes it.

This is an entertainment show. These are stuntmen who get to be the stars of the show. Marketing is everything. It's pretty much the whole product. The belt isn't a real championship. It can't be any more cheapened than having the winners be scripted. I'm not mad at Jim, but good god, could you imagine how boring it would be to go back to the days of Bruno Sammartino being the only champion for a decade? Jim came up in the kayfabe era, which did more to hurt all brands of professional wrestling than anything else ever. But it's why he has this 'honor the past' mentality about a fake sport. Guys with Jim's mentality here are the reason you still get asked 'you know it's all fake, right?' when you tell someone you're a wrestling fan. All that said, the WWE title spinner belt was just shitty looking and shouldn't have lasted nearly as long as it did (especially since the spinner rims they were based on went out of style way before the belt got tossed). Not gonna lie, I thought the US title spinner belt was actually kind of cool looking as a short term gimmick.

When they unified the Attitude winged eagle and the big gold and we got the v1 undisputed belt that we fans liked the look of it made sense to make a new belt to represent a new championship but when they decided to bring back the big gold on Raw the 90s winged eagle or the Attitude eagle belt should have been brought back . Best belt only if you were growing up during the time. I could say the current belt is trash, but it fits the times now. When the belt didn’t spin anymore imo I think it added back the prestige and subtracted the gimmick of the belt. Randy made it look good, HHH did, and so did Jeff and Edge. I just think the OG wrestling fans weren’t to thrilled for a prestigious title that’s been around for so long turn into a prop that sold well.

Dude straight up love the spinner belt, Cena and the spinner belt were the things that made me get in to wrestling, his feud with Edge still to this day is my favorite rivalry, I get the hate behind the belt it's not for everyone, but I still think most haters just hate on it to be "cool", and I do agree Cena should have always been the one to held the spinner version of the championship, it should have been retired when randy held it for the very first time at no mercy 2007, it was designed and made for Cena at that time where he was the "chaingang soldier" which was between 2005 to 2007, when he came back from his injury that gimmick was slowly fading away in to his "cenation" fase and by that time it made no sense for the spinner belt to still be active

The first version of the spinner belt looked absolutely terrible. The colors were muted, it looked pretty small in comparison to the big gold, oh and it fucking spinned. But the updated version that was used from 2007 to 2013 is a much better looking belt. In fact I actually think it's a good looking championship. Still don't like that it says champ, but I think it's still a unique looking design especially compared to what we have now. I also think the belt looks really great on the likes of Randy Orton, CM Punk, and Triple H. Despite it always being called John Cena's belt.

Just odd that for some reason when Cena eventually lost the WWE Championship, they still kept the spinner belt and didn't revert back to the Undisputed design.
