One of the lessons for American foreign policy makers….don’t assume that other nations aspire to American style freedom and democracy.
@phelanwolf6747
@phelanwolf6747 2 ай бұрын
Why would they? American style freedom is very lacking, just look at women's rights or even how non white male Americans are treated. American style democracy is not much better, how can it be that there is basically only a choice between an old white narcicist and an even older white man. How can it be that there are no more actual choices? Why are not all votes counted directly towards the election? The lesson is to be humble, improve oneself and to a certain degree accept that others are different.

It's so hypocritical that we could invade Iraq based on "what if" when Ukraine needs our help based on "what is".
@sunraystruck

Exactly. The hypocrisy here hits me like the “Don’t Look Up” hypocrisy. While these two are laughing at putin “losing the war”, I keep losing friends who are fighting against russians at the frontline day and night. One thing these two guys are missing is that it’s not Biden vs putin being in conflict. It’s russians being a gangrene as they’ve been for centuries. And Ukrainians can’t stop it on their own.

Iraq is only the tip of the iceberg. The US has invaded,toppled or bombed Syria, Libya, Ukraine (coup), Yemen,etc. in the past 15 years alone. These criminal actions have lead to the death of hundreds of thousands of people, generated millions of refugees and trillion of dollars in damages. Jim Sciutto is just one of many US establishment propagandists that believe in the impunity of the US on the global stage. China, Russia and the rest of the world are not innocent but they have not crossed lines like the US has done in the past 25 years.

Because one of the two parties is a wholly owned subsidiary of Donald J. Trump. You can't have a conversation with him, or anyone in his wing of the party because he won't let you. Remember the Republican debates and who didn't show up for a single one of them? Once the conventions are over and each side has selected it's nominee, I'll bet Trump will find a reason to still not debate. He won't debate because he knows that Biden would eat his lunch. His poles go up when he does something outrageous, or when the courts find against him. They go down when he debates. He's got a really big advantage going in to November, because at least one judgement will be coming down on him at that time. He won't risk losing that advantage by agreeing to a debate.

The emphasis on communication, as the means to avoid global catastrophe, was well-framed. IMHO the incremental opportunities gained by sly, seasoned, and successful negotiations are far more valuable to strategic success than are photo ops, in the modern era, even if meaningful talks still happen behind closed doors. Communication and vigilance prevent _total war_ among great powers, because drastic (or dumb) misunderstandings about the balance of strength between two powers is most predicted to break the survivalist partnerships within game theory. As such, it is clear that those same power-balance considerations are very important amid the jumble of a multi-polar order, and so clear, current, and reliable information is paramount to any survivable and strategic national defense therein. Survival is akin to victory, after all, whenever the threat of _total war_ is being discussed.

Truth. Though when it started, I believe it was more realistic because they were flying under Putin's radar. I tried to watch recently, but it was hard because I think they've been co-opted. I could be wrong, but at this point the media coming out of the country heavily monitored, and people are getting imprisoned and disappeared if they displease the wrong person. When it started, it was hopeful to see the few that expressed their honest opinions. It was a stark contrast to the "know nothing" or "I don't pay attention to politics" evasiveness of the mostly wary population.

I remember when the world was in peace and the Dayly Show was a show that didn't have to do propaganda for what they thought it's "better", (I might think that too but it is still propaganda). I remember they did satira on both parties, and they had no candidate. I remember they roasted everybody, I remember America was free to talk to each other. I remember you had no right or left flag. Oh... I remember.

The US elections have been reduced to social media disinformation and mainstream propaganda. At the the end of the day, the average citizen is then subjected to living in a car; bieng homeless or sent to prison. Its sad to see😢

Who is this guy kidding? Even American strategists and policy makers don't learn from history that happened during their own lifetimes. And the rest of America isn't exactly famous for their long-term memory or history aptitude. If you don't have an informed, educated citizenry, democracy will never work.

In terms of emphasizing communication, given the parallels drawn between the USA/USSR post cuban missile crisis and today, I'd be interested to hear a discussion on how that communication today would actually look compared to communication in the past. The reason bilateral communication could take place between the USA and USSR is that both superpowers envisioned a future where they remained a superpower and potentially a dominant one. The Russia of today does not see that future. They are planning from a position of desperation where a nuclear war may not "cost them" if they believe their country is going to fall anyways (given autocrats don't actually care about the consequences to their citizens). The USSR had a lot to lose however, and they were strong enough to believe they could pursue other means to compete as a superpower. Bilateral communication must be easier to establish in this kind of relationship. I don't see how you can establish any kind of productive communication with someone like Putin, but I'd love to know what it might look like.

Halt the ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo by Serbian forces. This intervention, known as Operation Allied Force, led to the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo and the establishment of a United Nations-administered protectorate. Diplomatic Efforts: The United States, along with other Western countries, engaged in diplomatic efforts to address the escalating tensions in Yugoslavia as it disintegrated. This included support for diplomatic initiatives such as the Vance-Owen Peace Plan and the Dayton Accords, which aimed to end the conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Humanitarian Aid: The U.S. provided significant humanitarian aid to the victims of the conflicts in Yugoslavia, particularly during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and the Kosovo War (1998-1999). This aid included food, medical supplies, and support for refugee camps. The U.S. played a role in military interventions in the region, particularly during the Kosovo War. In 1999, NATO, led by the United States, conducted a 78-day bombing campaign against Yugoslavia (then consisting of Serbia and Montenegro) to halt the ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo by Serbian forces. This intervention, known as Operation Allied Force, led to the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo and the establishment of a United Nations-administered protectorate. Support for Independence Movements: The United States, along with other Western countries, supported the independence movements of various Yugoslav republics, including Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo. This support was driven by a desire to uphold the principles of self-determination and to prevent further bloodshed in the region. Overall, the U.S. involvement in Yugoslavia during the 1990s was multifaceted, encompassing diplomatic efforts, humanitarian aid, and military intervention aimed at addressing the conflicts and promoting stability in the region. However, opinions on the effectiveness and appropriateness of U.S. actions in Yugoslavia remain divided among observers and historians. a multipolar world is fine if no countries like Ukraine and Taiwan are invaded and annexed against the consent and will of the people

Can't talk about this without mentioning the "E" word. Empire. Russia and China has given every indication that the principle way in which they feel constrained by the current world order, is in their ability to expand territorially. People need to understand why a return to the age of empires, anywhere, would be an incredibly bad thing for them. World Wars, colonialism, marshal law, etc. etc. The world is not big enough for it anymore.

Ukraine is by far the most black and white conflict in terms of morality we’ve seen in a long time. And the fact that half of the country wants to just give Russia a pass is nauseating. It seems that people in the U.S. don’t realize that not everything concerns the United States. We forget that people have agency and do things not thinking about us all the time. My guess is that’s why so many people don’t see how simple this conflict is
