Very nice video. My buddy and I went to Bull lake quite a few years ago for 3 years in a row. An older chap Jerry owned the camp back then. He called himself a bush pig. LOL. We mainly hit some of the back lakes for speckles and the river a few times but mostly got smaller ones in the river. That little cabin over the lake at 2:39 on the left with the red roof is where we stayed.

Jim great video and trip! Wanted to note that the orange flesh color (Xanthin content) of the trout meat is indicative of a crustacean diet that is only possible with an intact food web and protected watershed (freshwater copepods and other macrozooplanton). I would guess this trait also has strong genetic component that defines feeding preferences. I find the trout from this type of lakes taste better and have a higher fat content than Lakers that eat primarily baitfish forage that will have a white flesh. They definately cold smoke better! In larger lakes there can be subpopulations of S. namaycush that occupy different feeding niches/depths within same areas and will have different flesh color and fat level accordingly. Lake superior has at least 3
@JimBairdAdventurer
@JimBairdAdventurer Жыл бұрын
Very interesting, ya I know that about the meat being orange and then eating more small freshwater shrimp but didn’t know that this was a sign of an intact food web. I’ve heard that different fish right in the same area will focus on different food sources and there fire will have different meat colour and different fin colour. When I fished Great Slave Lake I noticed this for sure. Lake trout with white, yellow, and orange fins right off shore in the same spot. I’m not sure anyone knows why a particular lake trout will decide to go after a specific food source. Genetic component makes sense but I think fish hatched from the same clutch of eggs, from the same respective male and female could end up going different ways in the food they chase. I guess multiple males may fertilize the same batch of eggs though so, how would one tell? These lakers were indeed pretty fatty. Interesting to hear that they cold smoke better. Thanks for sharing!
@thylacine123
@thylacine123 Жыл бұрын
@@JimBairdAdventurer Jim thank you for the reply. Great slave would most certainly have multi-morphic lakers with its size and depth profile. Yes the zooplankton are super important to most aquatic food webs but are very sensitive to nicotinic compounds, PFAS, and heavy metals. Just an idea for your next trip if anybody in your crew has a packable titanium hot tent stove they can be easily used as a smoker if you bring along some Cedar sawdust and some kind of drip rack that can fit inside. I usually use a small butane stove that can be throttled to a very low and consistent setting for a heat source and it works very well for backcountry smoked trout. Just smoke them skin on and give it time depending on the size of the fish larger takes longer and add more sawdust every 13-30 minutes. When the white fat rises to the top and starts to pool it is done. turn heat off and let it coast for another 30 mins to an hour for best results

We have the same problem here in Western New York with species that were introduced negatively affecting native species. Northern Pike were stocked in the Kinzua Reservoir years ago and almost wiped out the native musky population. The Seneca Nation has been painstakingly reestablishing muskies recently. Hopefully they'll make a comeback.

Fun video. I'm watching this while recovering from "a procedure" and in between surfing the Internet for newer gear to replace some my ancient stuff. I enjoyed watching the first fish fry of the 2023 canoe season; lake trout with sides of lake trout and lake trout! Could you please tell me what the length of your double blade paddle? I started using one late last year and still deciding if I need a longer one for the beam of my canoe (34"max where I sit for solo paddling) or just need to get used to the one I have - I forget the length off hand. Thanks for the entertainment and for other videos I've watched. I've gleaned some good hacks to make life simpler in the ship.

Awesome trip. Of course the weather is the best on day have to leave. I have been to that I’m guessing must be 20 years ago now. I was still living on Manitoulin island. I frequently trekked through the area. Great video as always

Very nice, great area to have stomped around in. Ya, that’s the way it seems to go with weather. Always gets good when you’re in your way out. How do you like Manitoulin? Beautiful but not so much crown there I understand. I have spend some time there when you get as I have some family there.

@@JimBairdAdventurer it’s a wonderful slow pace of life on the island if a person can find good work. I have lots family on the island still, as all my fathers side were born there. I deer hunt up there every year still with family and try to get there once more each year just for a visit. You are correct. No crown land All private or reserves There is some great fishing to be had, both inland and on the big water. Spent many a March break in an ice hut on Lake Manitou after lakers when still in school. Anyways, really really enjoy your adventures. Thanks again for taking us along

I live in Espanola, you must have stopped at tim hortons when you drove through town, unless you are sean james and he would have made his own donuts from what he grew in his garden, or so he claims! He is a hoot to listen to what comes out of his mouth.

Just like being there Jim. Awesome fishing. Those drone shots really show the vastness of the North. I’ve been north of Massey and got stuck bad. Had to get a hydro crew to pull me out. Such good company you were with.
