What a trip!! Glad I was there the week after you, the bugs died down a wee bit. Seeing you make it through to cliff lakes makes me think about my decision if I should have just went for it instead of circling back on the Berg 😅... At least I will know for next time when I go that way. Looks like the Esquif boat was pretty rugged, you could just drag it up the portages with a rope from cliff lake 😱. I just picked one up and looking forward to bringing it out next season for its maiden voyage
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 24 күн бұрын
The Esquif will definitely take a beating. But plan to be able to cover less distance on flat water per day as compared to your solo boat. It will feel quite a bit slower. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next year!

As always great video! I once held a pike like that and it almost bit my face. Ive heard horror stories. Best way I've found is the finger under the jaw bone. Not touching the gills. Finger in and slide it towards the front. Your other hand supporting the fishes belly. Safe for you and safe for the pike. I really enjoy watching your videos and wish you all the best on your next adventure.
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 24 күн бұрын
Thanks for the advice! As you could see I had no idea how to properly hold it. I initially tried yo hold it by the gills but my finger went in too deep and got poked by what felt like its teeth. After that I decided to hold it up like I did, but I was very concerned that it would flick as I had no grip on it at all. That story about someone getting bit on the face sounds pretty horrifying.

Thank you Kenneth! I miss the summer too, but winter camping can be a fun way to get your camping fix while waiting for the next canoe season to arrive.

This was very enjoyable. It’s the 5th video of yours that I’ve watched. I’m going to go watch the rest of them now. I’m am subscribed with the 🔔 and I’ve given all your videos a 👍🏻so far. I’ve often wondered why nobody has tried using a pair of small like bear paw snowshoes when portaging a bog or swampy area. • I live on a couch in central North Carolina and even I know that Bruce Hyer is a legend in Wabakimi 😂😊

Great vid. I’ve been tripping for many years and recently found a good pair of trailer runners an alternative to boots for portaging. They offer just the right amount of grip and protection yet dry amazingly fast.

I've actually gone back to full height boots since this trip. Although I've never rolled an ankle, I like the support and protection they offer on rough terrain. I see many people using trail runners in places like Algonquin though. I've used some before and they definitely dry quicker. What's most important for me is that my footwear has good grip on wet rocks. Regular Salomon boots perform very poorly in that regard, but their Forces line with the EN designated soles are different and much more grippy on wet rocks. Salomon boots fit me very well so I'm going to stick with them until / unless I find something better. Thanks for commenting!

Awesome trip video. Just wondering if you considered stopping at the Wendell Beckwith cabins on Whitewater Lake. Maybe too much of a tourist trap for you? Great perseverance through those relentless bugs and the bog!

Awesome trip thanks for bringing us along! And nice light gear load out, I should take notes lol. I tend to over pack. I noticed one place you could save weight is switching to a silky f180 they are super light and super effective.
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 24 күн бұрын
Thank you! If I wanted to save more weight the first thing I would do is switch back to my 2-person MSR hubba hubba tent. Overall I think my load out was pretty reasonable. I think I did really well with keeping my food at 25lbs. For me there's no avoiding the extra 20+ lbs of camera gear and battery banks.
