Almost as important, he was an underrated lyricist, a cut or two above the typical rock lyricist. From Angel, I give you "silver wing silhouette against a child sunrise". Imagery so sweet, so evocative...so Jimi Hendrix.

My late older brother told me he was at one of Jimi's last recording sessions. He was a guitarist for Buddy Miles at the time. I asked him-'what songs?'-but he couldn't remember exactly. So, I ask him-'was one of the songs "Angel?"' But his account of the recording session was different from Mr. Kramer's, so I'm presuming it was a session for a different song; 'Drifting', maybe? Anyway, I sang both of them to my brother on his deathbed back in March of 2019. He wrote the song-"I Still Love You, Anyway"-for Buddy Miles' "Them Changes" album.

This song was written for his mother... He loved her dearly. I have 'Jimi Hendrix Live and Unreleased The Radio Show' on cassette...box set...1989 Castle Communications... hours of unreleased glimpses into his genius including an amazing version of '1983, (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) that he called a "Song Painting"... amazing!!! I agree with what is said about the recording on this compilation about the song 'Angel'..."Recorded in Jimi's apartment early 1968, while he was composing songs for the "Electric Ladyland" album. ANGEL wasn't properly recorded until 1970 during the sessions that were to become "The Cry of Love" album. " then about the unreleased track, "A very intimate glimpse into Jimi's recording process. When you hear this beautiful rendition, you almost feel like you're intruding on his privacy".

It's sad that the album only came out rushed after Jimi's death. Angel and other songs. Some were finished. Others less so. The record company wanted to capitalize on his death. That was the Cry of Love album. It's such a beautiful song and deserves much more attention than it has gotten.

That guitar on the first demo is just so heavy. No effects, no O/D. The heaviness was in his fingers. So I can understand why people focus on his guitar playing skills. But it irritates me because Jimi was so much more than that. He was one of the best songwriters of the 60s. Lots of people can play guitar amazingly well. But songwriting - including lyrics - while reflecting his musicality with his guitar playing was Jimi's true superpower. Today's generation may not care about him anymore, just like they don't care about Mozart or Beethoven. But musicians will always cover Hendrix songs, until the end of time.
