Three-mile Island basically stopped the advancement of nuclear power in the US. If at the first sign of trouble everyone at the three-mile Island facility had got up and walked out to their cars and went home the plant would have shut down automatically and safely. There were some mechanical failures, but the near tragedy was completely man caused. In the mid 70's I worked in a metal fabrication plant that was building nuclear reactor containment vessels. They were built to withstand a nuclear bomb. (From the outside not the inside) They were about 3" of solid steel with 3' of reinforced concrete covering it all.

It was the Brittish who conducted tests in the Australian outback, the French used Moruroa Atoll, basically in the middle of the Pacific ocean. This guy should be part of the nuclear marketing campaign.

Jim HUGE fan of your comedy. Listening to the dates I immediately booked for Taipei, had to jump through loops to secure plane tickets to fly from Shanghai to Taipei as flights are limited now to just one a week. This will be the first time I traveled outside China in over three years since covid. The original Din Tai Fung is indeed the best! I had it in over a dozen cities the original Taipei one is indeed the best I've eaten there close to 40 years before I got me first teeth. Can't wait to see the show man.

Jim said, they always talk about the size in terms of stadiums. Had a laugh. Then the expert says all the waste from the world can be stored in a single football end zone. Jim might be a genius.
@Pempel2000
@Pempel2000 Жыл бұрын
That's a common misleading argument. You can store any amount of any material in a football field end zone. It's just a matter of how high your are going to stack it... Yearly high-radioactive nuclear waste worldwide is estimated at around 12.000 tons. Which is usually stored in concrete-filled drum barrels the size of an oil-barrel (400 litres?). Now imagine 12.000 tons of those (minus the concrete) on a football field, let alone only in the end zone. Per year. And this excludes the mid- and low-radiation waste, which is significantly higher. I'm not against nucelar power, but those simple images by experts and advocats create a disturbed view to the public of the challanges this technologies is putting on us and further generations.

I live in Georgia [the state, not the country, Jim]. Georgia Power is constructing the only new nuclear power plant in the country. It is almost a decade behind schedule & multiple $billions over budget. The reason they couldn't use a newer design for the plant is because the new designs haven't been given the nod. There's at least 3 different designs, but the nuclear regulatory commission prevents them from proving their designs at a scaled up version of their very small current experiments.
