he is not really making a joke about Anne Frank, he makes a joke about where Britain is heading and uses a krass allusion. The fact that he as a German does not shy away from Nazi jokes thus subverting the "Do not mention the war" trope about Germans is kind of what makes him appealing to you Brits, I think.

Actually, Jimmy saying "This is fantastic news" was a setup to get the crowd to applaud vigorously - so that he could say "take it down until we know it's his." He would not have been able to do that joke if he had insulted Jon first. Then the crowd would have laughed - he needed applause so that he could say "take it down." In other words - it was a long-game insult.
