I'd never heard of him before today either. However, I don't think you give American audiences enough credit. George Carlin and other American comedians can be quite pointed in their negative comments against religion and their audiences roared at the hilarity. I guess that makes me agnostic. As for militant atheist all you have to do is look at the world's top two religions, but yes even atheists can be quite ruthless.
