The Carter Administration was really influential over here, Argentina, during our last (and by far the most brutal and violent) militar dictatorship, mainly by the efforts of Patricia Derian denouncing human rights violations. It represented a shift in US policy, which used to view South American dictatorships as allies against communism during the Cold War.

I’m 35 so Carter was before my time but I’m a history buff and I’ve read and watched everything I could on the Iran hostages of the US EMBASSY & he did a very poor job. It’s amazing that he was The President when that went down and was campaigning to get re-elected while Americans were held hostage. I don’t see how he could have focused on anything besides bringing those Americans home. There was a reason he only served one term and a big reason for the Reagan Revolution was people got to see how bad a left leaning President policy’s effect the entire nation. Carter comes off as a nice guy with a big heart with compassionate ideas but that doesn’t equal a great leader and it definitely didn’t translate well in real life with his policies. After just 4 years of Carter & his bleeding heart America had a Republican in the White House for 12 years (3 terms Reagan & Bush)until they were ready to give a Democrat another shot at leading. @@ProfessorDaveExplains i know this is supposed to be a video about carter but i just got confused when i watched the video instead of enlightened. for example, you discuss the 2nd oil embargo at 1:24, but do not elaborate how this might have been a failure of Carter's, or how it affected him (maybe the people blamed the inflation on carter or became unhappy with him, etc). i can list many more examples where you present an event like that and leave me confused about the significance. when explaining events in history, i think it is crucial to include even the most minute context in order for the viewer/learner to be able to fully understand. if it is a video about carter, i don't understand why the video hardly talks about him, or at least presents no useful analysis as expected from the title. i guess the main idea of what i'm saying is, WHY are these events important to his administration and how was it a success or failure? and yes, you can tell me to go make my own video then if i know so much, but i saw that no one else brought this up in the comments. maybe i am missing something, but that is what i thought. i do not mean to be a hater or something i just mean to give you criticism in case you decide to make more videos like this for the future, and please tell me if i am misunderstanding something . furthermore, i apologize if it is unwarranted. i hope you understand

I cant think of a single person who was such a great person, so loveable, yet such a mediocre leader. If he had more of a backbone and been a bit more patient by staggering his reforms out across 2 administrations he could have been one of the best presidents of the last 100 years, but he was a bit too gullible, indecisive, and self righteous. He was a great person but politically he was like an American Chamberlain, a classic appeaser. Doing things like supporting the Shah publically yet doing next to nothing to actually support him was enough to weaken the Shah and sour his opponents (like the ayatollah) against the US without actually doing anything to help the Shah. It was a classic example of why it's best not to do half measures. If Carter and Reagan had teamed up with Carter as the VP I honestly believe it would have been the best presidency since FDR. He was a great diplomat and ambassador, and had an excellent moral compass and endless compassion. Coupled with Reagans decisiveness, pragmatism, and political power it would have been a match made in heaven. Reagan could reign in Carters pie in the sky optimism while Carter could counter balance Reagan's more morally bankrupt acts like the Iran Contra affair

Jimmy Carter was a theological liberal who ultimately rejected biblical positions on polarizing issues like abortion and human sexuality. After the conservative resurgence brought a commitment to scriptural inerrancy back to the Southern Baptist Convention, Carter and his church instead embraced liberalism and left the SBC. Like many Southern Baptists before 1980, Carter was an advocate of reducing but not outlawing abortions. The Carter Center condemned the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade. In 2018, Jimmy Carter blasphemed God by claiming Jesus would approve of gay marriage. Carter shook his fist at Almighty God and made up his own rules.

As a Georgian and typically conservative 20 year old who voted for Donald Trump this year, Jimmy is my favorite president. I couldn’t agree more with pardoning the Vietnam draft dodgers. I also like his consolidation of the executive branch, cutting down the size of government and making it more efficient. Creating the department of energy and department of education were very shrewd moves, even if the department of education hasn’t been implemented well since his administration. He was saddled with a democratic congress that didn’t like him because he didn’t play DC political games and this caused quite a few of Carter’s policies which may have shone his presidency in a more positive light to not be approved. His rhetoric like the Malaise speech wasnt always the best(similar to Trump but in different ways)but his policy and refusal to abuse the office of president to force through partisan democratic bills makes a good president in my eyes and his personality makes him my favorite. Carter was a president too soon. If he were younger and became President today I think he could achieve tremendous things. That is if we can somehow get rid of that terribly hateful other political party.

You seemed to forget that the Shah came to power via a US backed coup which overthrew a democratically elected government. I also had a chuckle with your listing of the Shah's achievements as selling state run businesses. Yep selling assets built with public money has been a worldwide success!

I didn't forget anything, it's covered earlier in the series. In the Eisenhower tutorial I believe.

By democratically elected Government you mean the time when Qajar dynasty ruled over Iran? People lived in filth and suffered from many diseases back then and women were not considered as individuals. I believe you have mistaken Shah's father for him Because Shah's father was responsible for the coup. His father (Reza Shah) who was the leader of the coup was actually the one who brought civilization to Iran by building so many institutions, facilities and eliminating the religious disastrous beliefs which consisted of not letting Shia Mullahs have a power in making any kind of decision and removing hijab for women which later lead to women enfranchisement.

Great channel and content! In this video however you stated that "sales of state own businesses" is progressivism on Shah's part. I would call it as following orders from washington to get in line with the neoliberal order.

The man was absolutely terrible as a president. He still stands as the classic example of what can happen when an idealist starts running things without considering reality. On the lighter side, remember him 'lusting in his heart' for other women and, the most fun: the Killer Rabbit incident?

He came from the wilds of Georgia….. I’m pretty sure the are such things as killer Rabbits down there….. I’m sure if you went to the Georgia wilderness you’d be squealing like a Pig 👀

@@martinoconnor923 I doubt it. He was just a rich guy from GA. I'm from the wilds of WV and later Louisiana. There's no such thing as a killer rabbit and if there was, we would have shot and skinned it, fried it up, and maybe called our friends over to eat the little bastard with beer and some maque choux on the side. But it seems you're projecting with that squealing like a pig thing. Do what you want, but keep it to yourself.

@@TheAzmountaineer I suggest you actually read some of the book’s which are available on Jimmy Carter …. I have 4 which I’ve read and you’re welcome to borrow …. The incident with the rabbit type creature is documented and caught on camera ….. people who are willing to give it out should be willing to take it back …….

@@martinoconnor923 At first I thought you meant they wrote 4 books about the killer rabbit, which was hilarious until I reread you comment. Thanks for the offer, but I'm good, I lived through his presidency. I remember the pictures of the rabbit in the water while he fights it off with a paddle or oar. It's funny, regardless. And can you imagine what the press and talking heads would make of it if that happened to Biden or Trump?

The Administration of Nelson Rockefeller, as the defacto VP in charge of Foreign Affairs, with his trusty sidekick Hank seemed to operate all foreign affairs real well in the Carter Administration, as id did for Ford's...... Nelson made sure The Shah was well treated at the Mayo Clinic..... Texaco liked to exploit Colonies like the one the Brits gave us after WW2...... Seems like US Foreign Policy has been engineered to serve Standard Oil profits since 1910.....
