Dude, Jim barely even answers most of these questions in the way I feel like everyone hopes he will. The answer to "what was the background [story] behind 'Pain'" is "yeah, we don't really censor ourselves in terms of genre or sound when we play."

Jim is very secretive about what exactly the personal aspect to each song is. It kinda reminds me of a story about Justin Pierre of Motion City Soundtrack. He wrote a song in the early 2000's (before MCS was somewhat relevant) and his mother thought the song was about his sister (though it wasn't). Since then, he hasn't revealed exactly what or who each song is about (except for Time Turns Fragile to my knowledge). It's more about what the listener gets out of the song rather than the writer's personal attachment.
