Sunderland, Coventry and Bristol City I think it was could all be relegated. Coventry were playing Bristol, and Sunderland we playing Everton. If Sunderland lost and Bristol and Coventry drew, Sunderland were down. So he delayed kick off at Bristol v Coventry so he knew the Sunderland score, so they could play for a draw.

I was at Highfield road that night. There were still many fans outside the ground before kick off time and the game was delayed for safety reasons. That decision was made by the referee after consultation with the police. Jimmy Hill as chairman of Coventry was informed of the decision by the referee. The score of the Sunderland match was shown on the eletronic scorebard, & not announced over the tanyo during the game.

Jimmy Hill was not actually popular with Coventry fans while he was chairman, but he was a great manager for them in the 60's, and did great things for football. He introduced 3 points for a win and pioneered the all-seater stadium, which nobody else thought was a good idea until Hillsborough happened. What a visionary.

But there is one more important fact that Sunderland fans don't realise: THE POLICE MADE THE DECISION TO DELAY THE KICK-OFF, NOT JIMMY HILL! Also, 2 unwritten rules of football which applied during the 70's, 80's & 90's: Coventry would never go down, and Sunderland would always go straight back down after promotion.
