first impressions back in 93, I wasn't a fan of the album. Depressed me. David was so happy with married life for Slip of the Tongue. Musically disappears for years and returns a broken man from divorce and his voice seemed damaged. Today revisiting the album, I love it. David's lower register is so rich and bluesy. Deep songs too.

David’s speaking voice is so rich. Jimmy as always sounds elfin. But when David talks about Jimmy as “His Lordship”, it’s so amusing. Only the English would use that particular reference. It’s delightful.

@Garegh62 You need ears because First David is a baritone and Robert a tenor . And natural register of David have noooothing to do with Plant . I dont hear Robert plant in Burn , Stormbringer and Come taste the band and the early whitesnake stuff . You think probably that WS was formed in 1986 haha . There s similaritie in the higher register they come from the same era and actually steve marriot screamed like this before them and all of them were influenced by black guys and there s stuff where you can see that Robert completly Ripped off james brown . But natural David stuff is more howlin wolf then Paul rodgers than Robert ever was . Still is . Robert is great , Led zeppelin was a great band but they also Ripped off litteraly a tons of Black music songs and not credited the original songwriters saying they composed it .

Oh, I heard Dave's comment about how Robert treated him and I see it like this: I can see David's side because, as he said, if they knew each other then, all the sudden, getting this rage coming at him must be disconcerting. However, I can see Robert's side because man, you're encroaching on his territory, so to speak. But, if Robert didn't want to get together and record an album or go on tour, that's on him. But, as a whole, it was Jimmy, a member of Zeppelin, who decided to do this and should've known his old bandmate would be pissed, rightly so. I agree w/one commenter than subconsciously or deliberately Jimmy might've been pitting Plant and Coverdale against each other. Unfortunately, once again Robert took the bait but, at least a Plant & Page reunion came out of it.
@benjaminmoloy7163
@benjaminmoloy7163 3 жыл бұрын
what did Coverdale do with Plant's territory? nothing. Plant always acted like he invented the rock-frontman persona, but he didn't, there were Daltrey, Jagger, Jim Morrison, Van Morrison etc etc before him. Coverdale never copied him more than Plant copied Daltrey.

@@benjaminmoloy7163 I agree none of these guys invented the wheel but, it's true that Coverdale has been a Plant wannabe, nothing wrong w/that. I can understand him being upset that Page went on tour w/out him but, at the same time, he said no. I think Jimmy knew that touring w/Coverdale would piss him off. That's why he did it and it obviously worked because they toured together throughout the 90s. He did say he had a problem w/his ego and, again, I think Jimmy knew it. Hey, if you've known someone for 20+ years, you know now to play them. I guess Jimmy can play other things besides the guitar😉

I've always liked David Coverdale on his own. I had Whitesnake's album back in '87 and I liked it, a lot. I've always thought he a deep, sexy English accent. He also seems like a real stand-up guy but, it's just weird seeing him in place of Plant. I remember this collaboration in the early 90s and people griping about it because they were calling Coverdale a Plant knockoff and things of that nature. I can't comment on the album because I haven't heard it. But, it's hard seeing Coverdale & Page w/out thinking of Plant & Page. I do agree that this collaboration may've gotten Robert to reconsider a Zeppelin reunion of sorts.

Omg it's so funny i started watching some Coverdale/Page uploads and i stumbled on this interview and i scrolled down on the comments and lo and behold I see that you have commented on this interview. You know the more i watch Coverdale the more i have grown to like him. He doesn't seem to be the bombastic rockstar i initially accused him of. He seems very likable and genuine and the collaboration between him and Page was a great idea. The album is very good and the live shows are good. I would guess that the only reason Page ended their collaboration was because of the Page/Plant reunion, otherwise Coverdale and Page certainly would have had success making a few more albums and tours. They both certainly look like they were into it. We may have missed out on some good Coverdale/Page albums by them ending their collaboration after just one album.

@@surfshack2 I think David Coverdale is a decent guy too. Who knows what would've happened? I'm not sure how old Coverdale is. Jimmy is 77. I assume he can still play guitar? If one or both have the itch to tour, maybe they can get together? Mick and Keith still rock. This time, I don't think Robert will do it. After the 2007 show, he said no and again in 2014. So, we'll see.

"Shortsighted." Jimmy being subtle. That might define how he feels about Plant since 1980. I'm sure there are a few other choice words in there too which he's struggled to keep out of the public arena. I did like the one where he said just in the last 5 years he was sick of Plant playing a reunion question ("I have nothing to do") in the media and getting tongues wagging when Jimmy knows damnwell Mr. Ego is just stroking the public's affection for Zeppelin when he had zero interest in anything more with Page or Jones. It's actually hurtful to Jimmy. Plant is the ex who keeps you just close enough just to wound you. The guys an asshole under the charm.

They are both a bunch of assholes who know how to do business and keep Zeppelin albums selling. Still love them, they wouldn't be where they are right now if they didn't know how to stay in the game. I just wish Robert wasn't such a dick to David, who was obviously honoured to work with Page and all of this was special to him. You make a great point - Robert wishes to keep Jimmy to himself but doesn't want to reform Zeppelin and doesn't want Jimmy to collaborate with anyone else.

Timing and Plant. This was in the grunge era so a lot of the big rockers from the 70s and 80s were immediately less relevant. This dovetails into why they only toured Japan. I've read accounts they did some testing for US shows and the sales were sluggish. Then Plant got dropped into it with MTV wanting to do the Unledded thing and Plant called Jimmy and that brought Coverdale/Page to a formal close. I'd have taken Coverdale/Page 2 any day of the week over the awful Unledded. I still can't believe Jimmy went along with tearing apart Kashmir and in the finale of the song adding the Black Dog riff. Still makes me vomit just a little. Kashmir was vibe art not tear it to pieces because you can.

@@andreparoni Clarksdale was a sad offering. More of soulless Plant offering. All the things that make Jimmy the musical wizard, Robert made him leave out. In short, Clarksdale is a Plant solo LP with Jimmy guesting.

Well, in hindsight, Coverdale has ALWAYS been a good guy & a professional. Page went after Coverdale because, I think at the time, Plant & Page weren't really on good terms . I think it was probably a "ha! well then, watch this Robert!" . I can only imagine the conversation btw Page & Coverdale . Perfect plan at the time . Page certainly needs to do something before Christ comes back, though......

technically Jimmy owns Led Zeppelin and he shoulda reformed the band with David as singer, Coverdale coulda easily pulled off the vocals

David's copying Richard Burton's accent. I think his reference was listening to War Of The Worlds. A world away from that guy who drawled about swallowing flies on The California Jam in a thick Yorkshire accent. Nothing wrong with improving oneself, but his accent is affected.

Envidioso Robert? No, celoso quizás. O Plant o nada. Es lo que hay.
