He hid his crimes through humour and it was very clever. He could just pass anything off as part of his on screen persona. Also, his secretary said something to the effect of Jimmy always talked about how there was no such thing as the perfect crime, ""Because you couldn't tell anyone about it or you'd get found out." That was exactly what he did and in many ways did commit the perfect crime in his own words.

Could even consider it a threat. He may have clocked it was an adult and he's saying he'd have their young sister. Absolutely sickening
@lw3646 Жыл бұрын
I'd say it probably wasn't written by a child, or not a child alone anyway. Come along is not a phrase a child is likely to write themselves. Theatre is also unlikely to be in a young child's vocab as the place TV is filmed. The name also sounds made up, too extravagant. Also the idea of turning the idea of fixing Savile back unto himself is unlikely to occur to a child, a child would simply be interested in getting their dream desire to come true. It also plays on the idea of the many meanings of the word fix. (To exact revenge upon or punish someone.) Savile also possibly recognises this letter as a coded threat and responds instantly with a coded threat of his own. He did the same thing in a 1995 interview when an old colleague from the 1950s brought up a girl called Norma. The clip is from the 1970s, the peak of his offending. But for it it to be an adult victim abused as a child is possible, Savile began offending in the 1950s in Leeds, Manchester through his dance hall s, he also molested girls on top of the pops which started in 1964, and Saviles travels in 1968 onwards. Its possible too the letter was written by the parent or sibling of a victim. It's also perfectly possible too it was just a silly letter by someone with no knowledge of Saviles crimes. Generally Savile would not like being challenged, especially about his crimes, but possibly he was happy to air this because he'd have enjoyed turning the threat back on the writer.

The last letter was an obvious practical joke or even real threat, not a kid's letter. Saville handled it so coolly that he must have believed he was doing nothing wrong, and quietly told the sender to FOQ. Stunning!
@SirHilaryManfat10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I get the impression that it's someone in the know telling Savile that he's being watched. It's obviously a false name, and the tickling comment at the end hints that Savile is inappropriately touching kids. Especially as the word tickle is placed in quotation marks, which sometimes denotes an ironic double meaning. Unfortunately it seems that because Savile knew he was pretty much untouchable, he deliberately aired this letter as a big "fuck you" to the writer. I find the context of the letter and the context of his arrogance even more chilling than the actual tickling comment in itself.
@THX-22086 жыл бұрын

I was thinking someone on the production team must have put that letter there at the last minute, without him noticing. If he read that with prior knowledge, and added it to the show, giving that answer he made prior, I wouldn't be surprised. His arrogance went beyond arrogance. He knew he was untouchable.. Absolutely above the law. But I really think it was put there without his knowledge, and that answer was made on the spot. It sails too closely to the truth. He knew what he was doing, knew they put the letter there to shake him up, and he still couldn't care less. And had to give that answer, alluding to everything, almost admitting to it, still waving it in whoever put that letter there's face. Listen to what he says.. It's unbelievable now. The writing is childish, so someone got a child to write it. The name could be some clue, or uncomfortable reference. And right at the end, I thought he flipped the camera off, seriously I expect him to use that level of disregard, but it is his index finger.. Looks like he is moving to touch his nose.. Watching and listening to him, I think everything he does or says, has to be taken as having a different connotation.

It is remarkable that people like Saville don't take a fall down a long flight of stairs. The show in the UK that first brought the subject of child sexual abuse into the open was That's Life and I have to admit, albeit being very young at the time, that I thought they were trying to invent something that simply did not exist and I was quite shocked not by the crimes they were shining a light on but by how sordid the whole thing was. People don't remember that nobody wanted to know at the time. We were all quite comfortable with that skeleton locked in the cupboard. The other thing about That's Life that I couldn't fathom was the stories about people getting taken to the cleaners, ripped off by all kinds of con men and not doing anything about it. That's the other reason Saville could get away with it - nobody went round and broke both his legs.

Despite what some may say human nature dictates this, it happens in the public domain, police, nhs and to remind those with a short attention span Rotherham. It's sickening that this country has declined to this, and crimes that used to be headline news are just seen as a common occurrence. The media are the worst in my book picking who is the victim to play out a sick narrative designed to divide and spread hate, and the BBC who shielded this piece of shit with many others who proudly continue. This company sends unsolicited threatening letters to members of the public and the vulnerable to scare them into paying for a service many no longer need, and THEY OWN ADVERT REVENUE DRIVEN COMPANIES that buys up the content YOU PAID FOR. It is abhorrent
@gavinmillar8162 жыл бұрын
Because they didn't know. Suspicions and rumours are not enough to convict someone and Saville was notoriously legitious making any kind of investigation incredibly difficult Why is the BBC the only organisation you deem responsible? Saville was able to get away with his crimes because he placed himself within the highest echelons of British Society. The BBC was one such institution and his association with it helped shield him from accusations and suspicions. But so did the Tory Government of the 1980s, with Maragret Thatcher endlessly lobbying on his behalf for a knighthood And the Royal family aswell. Prince Charles considered him a close personal friend. Like many/most institutions at the time the BBCs child protection protocols where non existent at the time. But this isn't proof of a conspiracy. That was just the reality of the times. It was investigative journalists at the BBC who actually revealed Savilles crimes after he died. Meanwhile the Conservative Government of today has MPs accused of rape, convicted of pedophilia and admitting watching porn in the commons. And Charles brother Andy Windsor also had a paedophile best friend. Of the three institutions it seems like one has learned the lessons of the past. Whereas the other two are just as bad as they ever were

Everyone in the comments is looking at things with perfect hindsight knowing what he did - if you'd been watching at the time it would just be Jimmy Saville being Uncle Jimmy Saville with no thought of anything like child abuse it was a program about fixing things and making childrens dreams come true. Only those who knew him knew what he was like but most of them had no idea either. He was just an eccentric who raised money for charities. That was what everyone thought. If you think every eccentric or person who raises money for charities or every person knighted is a perv then you are sick in the head as he was. David Icke.

It's not a justification, but times were different back then. The problem was not in the public consciousness all the time. @@emmaroberts7004 I remember watching Savile's TV show, it was quite trashy and he came across as weird, but I guess we watched it because it was fun to see people having their dreams come true. I think at the time Savile came across as shallow and insincere and a bit arrogant, but it never occurred to me that he would be doing the things he did. In hindsight it's obvious when you watch compilations of the more outrageous things he said, but remember back then those few things were mixed in with hours of him talking inane and boring nonsense. I never understood why he was famous, even in the late 70s when I started listening to radio his show was already cheesy and out of date. He had friends in high places I guess. The charity "work" made him into a sort of deity.

RUDI UK, has hit it on the head. There were people inside the BBC WHO KNEW ALL ABOUT IT. But elected to stay quiet, as "such things were not understood" in those days. There were also people in Stoke Mandeville hospital who knew, but kept quiet because of his charity work in bringing hundred of millions to their spinal unit. Apart from that, Saville had been a professional boxer, after WW2 were he served as a "Bevin Boy" down the mines. He was known to go around to anyone who spoke out & quietly "tune them" up for 30 to 40 minutes Even Thatcher was politely warned about giving him an OBE for his services to charity, but still she went ahead! The only expression that can come to mind, is WHITEWASH!

Berkely Quartermain . - or however you spell his name - was not a child when this letter was written. The childish handwriting in the supposed letter Saville is reading out would never have been Mr. Quartermaine's, not even, I think , when Quartermaine was a child himself . Also, in fact, I would guess he was of a similar age to Saville . Back in 2014 , I had moved out of my flat in Leytonstone and used a friend's lock-up to store my stuff whilst I got myself sorted. It was soon after this that my friend died. At the funeral his son told me it would be ok to keep my stuff in the lock-up until his late father's lease ended ( there was only another 6 weeks on it ) but if I wanted to keep it on I would have to speak to the landlord , a certain Mr. Berkely Quartermain . Other , unrelated acquaintances of mine had some info on Mr. Quartermain , of whom I had previously never heard ; namely that he had long ago used monies from unspecified sources to buy up a lot of properties like railway arches, garages and lock-ups, that he was either from an upper middle class background or maybe instead, that he liked to maintain such an appearance. That he lived in Epping Forest, possibly Chingford ( as in the letter Saville reads out here ) . That he was want to drive a very old classic Bentley limo around and that he had extensive contacts in the worlds of high and low finance , as it were. I gained the impression that he might not be straight - in fact some wanted me to understand that he preferred his men young - although I can only confirm that this was a rumour. I had the privilege of speaking to Mr. Quartermaine over the phone on two occasions . His voice was elderly , poised , deliberative , plummy and rather precisely enunciated . I couldn't tell as I listened to him if it was put on or not and remember afterwards being uncertain as to the authenticity of the delivery - although , for those of you who may never have met a genuine member of the English Upper Classes , I would like you to understand how unlikely and eccentric some of them may seem in their personal manners , even to their compatriots - so I just couldn't be sure . Certainly , he was a business man through and through and I formed a further impression of him as a man not to be messed with. There was an implicit threat in his most banal comments, in the manner as it were of a Bond villain or perhaps Sheer Khan . I had totally forgotten the man's name until tonight when I just followed KZbin down the rabbit hole until I came to this. Imagine my surprise to hear of this very unusually named individual from my nearly forgotten past . In all likelihood , Saville had this letter written and transcribed into childish script so that he could goad Mr Quartermaine , presumably an acquaintance in some scene or another , on live TV . That was " Jimmy The Fixer's " style, after all . All in plain sight . By the way, if memory serves me right , Saville had extensive interests in the Essex / east London clubland scene. I believe he had an interest in the Ilford Island club , amongst others , and that he was closely connected to the Essex night club security scene at certain times . There was a time when I knew some members of that security community and they confirmed the same . Also, they confirmed that he was an untouchable nonce . This would have been the very early 1990's , 20 years before I heard the name ' Berkeley Quartermaine ' . I am sure also that Mr. Quartermaine must be dead by now or otherwise very long lived indeed.

Not to this extent, but I’ve encountered many narcissists in my lifetime, particularly in the workplace. They often manipulate everyone around them and on numerous occasions I’d speak in double meaning such as this, just to ensure they know that whilst everyone around them are naive and love them, I’m watching them and trying to protect other people. I usually find that most normal people are oblivious to it. It’s interesting to watch two narcissists in high profile jobs discover they are both that way inclined as well…. It’s like a sick group of people and they are everywhere like wolves.
