My oh my. Old Spa is difficult enough on a single screen, but driving in VR brings a whole new respect for the insane men who drove here.

Cameron Pollock With that logic; if you don't know how to cook, you can't criticise a bad food. Seems legit.
@mangoshake
@mangoshake 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ft5fTL lmao you talk is if Jimmy's driving is bad; that's a lot of force feedback on the wheels with basically 0 other inputs from the computer to give him any idea what's actually happening with the car. The food analogy doesn't count either simply because you're not a passenger the same way a customer eats a chef's food. You're just watching Jimmy cook. You actually don't know what the food tastes like.

6:15 - To think, some of that barbed wire beheaded Chris Bristow in the 1960 Belgian GP... But it was a while before he could be removed and in the meantime drivers had to avoid his headless body lying on the track... I guess they'd never heard of a red flag back then. And then Alan Stacy was killed 5 laps later following a bird strike to the face. That old track was lethal!

Great race, and nice shoutout to Dan Gurney! I did a time-accelerated 24 Hours of Le Mans in Project Cars 2 a few days ago using Gurney and AJ Foyt's 1967 Le Mans winning #1 GT40 Mk IV as a tribute. The 1967 prototypes actually work pretty well on the modern Le Mans after shortening the gear ratios though I wish Historic Le Mans was there (it's possible for the upcoming Le Mans Icons DLC, but I'd also like Sebring... oh well.) Anyway, definitely gotta try this combo for myself, and I've never driven Historic Spa in any sim. Note to self: Save money for a VR-capable graphics card...

7:25 It is probably Jean-Pierre Beltoise. Henri Pescarolo had a green helmet ;) Fun fact : Matra's boss Jean-Luc Lagardère was tired of not recognizing his drivers when Matra started in F3 so he asked them to bear the colours of the brand's missiles on their helmets. Beltoise kept the colours he had when he raced motorbikes because he was already in F2 but all the F3 drivers had to choose a colour. Pescarolo was the last to choose and green was the only colour left. This green helmet followed him throughout his entire racing career ! ^_^
@ObviusRetard
@ObviusRetard 6 жыл бұрын
Another fun fact: On the 6th of May 1973, Henri Pescarolo drove not only the fastest race lap on this old Spa circuit on one of the last ever held races on that course before it got rebuilt into the Spa we know today, it is also to this day the race lap with the highest average speed, going around the about 14km long track in just 3:13.4, for an average speed of 262,4kph!
@bubblefroggy1
@bubblefroggy1 6 жыл бұрын
The fastest ever record time of the old Spa circuit was, during the qualifying of the same race, the 1000 km of Spa '73, the pole position time of 3:12.7 (263.414 kph or 163.7 mph) by Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari 312PB. During the race, Henri Pescarolo's Matra 670B was trapped with a radar gun, coming out of the Masta kink ("by far the most difficult corner in the world", according to Jackie Stewart) they took full throttle, at 363 kph (225,56 mph) ! Pescarolo says he was at 300 kph, or 186 mph, in Burnenville, the long right corner (800m) before Malmedy and the Masta Straight ! Incredibly fast on bumpy roads used by everyday traffic the rest of the year ! That's why some drivers, like Jean-Pierre Beltoise or François Cevert, refused to race at the old Spa. And Jacky Stewart led a safety campaign, so that F1s never raced again at the old Spa after the 1970 GP.

I just this video today, I met and got to know Dan Gurney through the one and only Phil Hill. ( 1961 F1 World Driving Champion ) My family was given tickets to the last 2 F1 races at Long Beach and that is where I met the man, he was one hell of a human being, he along with Phil Hill took me to a track day and worked with me for about 7 hours on things to make me a bit of a racer. Unfortunately I did not ever get anywhere. I had heard of his passing and was devastated now both of my racing heroes are long gone. Thank you Dan and Phil for the lessons on life and racing you gave me, I hope in the sim world I will do you both proud as I embark on that journey. Thanks to Jimmy Broadbent, it is he who has inspired me to try racing once again after more than 30 years.

When the whole sim racing world came online way back in 1997 (I think) We ran on TEN and laid the ground work for what is truly amazing racing that is available now. I used to run a sim called Grand Prix Legends. It was basically the same time frame of F1 in this video and my favorite track was Monza because it was so fast and the old original super long Nuerburgring (sp?) I have been trying to decide if I want to dive back into sim racing again. Watching this video has really got my interest up. It is so fluid and clean compared to the old days. I am a sprint car fan and will probably go iracing in the dirt track side. I spent about 15 years working on a 410 winged sprinter so I have a good understanding of how they work. I hope that will give me a slight advantage. Killer video and man the AI cars were freakin crazy out there. LOL Well done Jimmy!

Awesome. I miss driving Grand Prix Legends. I don't remember the track being so aggressively bumpy like here.

Yes, Dan Gurney was a class act. I briefly met and talked to him at an F5000 race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 1975. My sister had just spent a year at Leeds University and had given me a Leeds t-shirt which I was wearing at the race. That caught Dan's eye and he asked me if I had been there. After I told him that I hadn't he told me I ought to go to England as he really enjoyed the time he had spent there.

I just wonder , if Sir Jackie Stewart would play this game, if he still had these skills and could feel the car and drive like in the 60s early 70s? That would be interesting to know. And What would he say about the handling of the simulation cars, if it's in the near of his time?

I know you probably get this type of thing a lot, but I’d like to see you do a bit of a series of modern F1 cars on historic circuits. Might be mildly lackluster for some circuits, but it could prove a different, unexpected challenge. Either way, love the vids and keep up the good work 😄

I remember trying a converted GPL Spa in the NR2003 Group C mod - brake twice a lap & lift once, and that old version had some rather tougher corners than it should. Can't imagine F1 being any different. Still got an install around, seems times were in the 2:20-2:30s which is bonkers. Not *awesomely* fun after a while though, with that little going on.
