I know it's a Safe Set for the Royal Variety, and Jimmy's developed his style since, but it's interesting to see him working a ponderous, Demetri Martin-inspired manner, with nice jokes that don't lean on shock appeal. I wonder when he dropped the posh voice and slow manner.
@neil124 жыл бұрын
Colin Surname I was literally thinking how much this reminded me of Demetri Martin
@csurname4 жыл бұрын
@@neil12 Jimmy's openly a big fan, definitely back in 2004! Both are ponderous, speaking as if the thought just occurred. The main stylistic distinction here is Jimmy's slow, refined, overly posh voice, and how he spaces out after each punchline, as if he doesn't quite get that he's cracking jokes (a Paul Merton trick, Milton Jones does a speedier version). Demetri does not act oblivious. The content similarity is how these jokes all involve pedantically misinterpreting something. Jimmy acts more snobbish and bigoted, which he'd hone into his style, Demetri more genuine and technically correct. Note how Jimmy incorporated slideshows in later shows, similarly to Demetri's visual elements, but his style also became a lot more insulting and whipsmart.
@neil124 жыл бұрын

6:55 Could someone explain this joke? Windham? Dead leg? This joke went over my head. Maybe it’s a British thing?
@mi1kyj0374 жыл бұрын
It wasn't Windham. It was wind him. To wind a baby is to help them burp (lifting them to your shoulder and patting them on the back). However to wind someone can also mean to hit someone hard in the abdomen so as to have them temporarily struggle breathing. So, he was mixing up the meaning when he said "She asked me to wind him". Giving someone a dead leg is to hit them hard in the leg as to temporarily lose feeling. So the next layer of the joke was to propose a dead leg, rather than winding the baby since he "misunderstood" when she asked him to wind the baby
