I never thought I’d consider calling someone “a well above average coach” insulting. Brindamours literally had the best start to a career by a coach in the history of the league. Fastest to 300 wins, he’ll probably be fastest to 400 and 500 too the way they’ve got this roster built.

I think it ultimately comes down to if Mikko fits in and enjoys his time here. If he clicks with the team/Rod, enjoys being the big guy in town not behind Nate dog, and finds success in his game, I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to stay. Eric Tulsky is not Don Waddell and will absolutely sign him to a large contract. Tulsky has even said they learned from the Guentzel situation and want to sign him but are giving him time to adjust and see how he feels.

All very true, this is something I highlighted in depth with this video. The reason a deep playoff run is important is to show Rantanen that this team wants to invest in their players and win. In doing that Rantanen may feel comfortable signing here instead of signing elsewhere

As a long canes fan, goaltending has been the issue for a long time. But as long as both Andersen and Kotchekov are healthy and do their job. We could have a chance at winning it this year. Especially having Rantannan on our team and a great defense and an outstanding special team. LGC

I don’t think its cup or bust at all. Other ppl have mentioned the cap space freeing up this summer and with the likes of nikishin, morrow and nadeau waiting in the wings, have the home grown talent to fill in the gaps. Most canes fans saw this year as a bit of a retool with next year opening a new cup window. The Moose trade makes things look more urgent but honestly necas and drury both went to arbitration last summer and clearly didnt want to sign so i think the mindset in the canes front office was similar to that for the avs. Sell high now or lost them for nothing later. I also do think tolsky will over moose 14x8. Why else make the trade and he has plenty of cap for it.
@charlesmartin6431
@charlesmartin6431 4 күн бұрын
Especially with the cap going up 7 million next year, Orlov's contract alone plus the cap going up is the 14 million you need. Scott Morrow or Nikishin will most likely replace Orlov next season on a rookie contract. That is just my opinion on that.

@@jimmyhockey yeah, but they have next year set up really well too, not accounting for a potential Rantanen extension, they expect to have somewhere in the realm of 25-30 mil in cap space, and all their core guys are still locked up for years to come, they still have most of their picks over the next several years, and they still have good prospects, some to move in deals, some like Nikishin and Morrow who could, especially in the case of Nikishin immediately make a splash and replace burns or orlov for cheaper, letting them spend money on their question marks. Their question marks are at least 1 top 6 forward, ideally a top line forward, though svech aho jarvis isn't a bad top line and they are locked up through 2028. Probably at least 1 defenseman, they would have 6 if both Morrow and Nikishin make the jump, but betting on two rookies, at least one of which would likely be asked to play top 4 or maybe even top pair, might be a bit much. Whatever they have in goal. Kooch is still signed, but somehow I doubt they decide to bring Freddie back, we all love him, and he is genuinely a great goalie, but its too much to ask a guy like martin, or Tokarski to be our number 2, or even our number 1 for stretches of every season. And finally they would need a few forwards to fill in around the edges, they'll probably pick some to bring back, and find a couple new guys, to play bottom 6, but that's not a huge spend. So realistically that 30 mil will go quick, but say its 14 mil for Rantanen, probably try for Hill or Vejmelka that could easily be 5-7 mil, defenseman is probably 3-5 mil, they dont need a world beater, but a guy who is solid in case the rookies arent. Leaving probably about 5 mil to fill in around the edges. That's still a great team, and that's assuming the Canes find guys at market rate. they constantly find guys who have career years here for cheap, guys like Noesen, Robinson, hell despite the controversy, Deangelo put up 50 points for a mil, and we even got to flip his RFA rights for picks. Edit: apparently I last checked before the Rantanen trade, and before the projected cap jump, They have presently, 55.7 million against the cap next season, leaving them with 40 mil!!!

There’s a lot of missing context when people talk about the Guentzel situation last season. Last year the Hurricanes would have been $20M over the cap if they re-signed everyone at their value. So, not only did Guentzel walk, but so did shutdown D Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, and Teuvo Teravainen. And in spite of all that, Carolina did end up matching the offer that Tampa Bay gave Guentzel with the 8th year but Guentzel didn’t want it. So it wasn’t ever about the Hurricanes refusing to pay; they just fought really hard early in negotiations to see if he would budge. This year, with the Canes having plenty of room under the rising cap this offseason they will have the flexibility to pay top dollar. Mikko will get offered an 8 year contract worth at least $13M annually from the Hurricanes. It will of course be his decision once again so there is risk that he will choose free agency due to fit, but I would put those odds at 75/25 that he signs or leaves.

Nice team playing winning hockey. But they don't have enough. The Canes have the talent but come playoff time they struggle to score the greasy goals needed to win the tough series and the goaltenders are competent but have to be near perfect. two things determine how serious this team is when the playoffs come: powerplay consistent goaltending both of these are what have costed us the last few years, especially last year which was probably the best team in franchise history top to bottom, blowing a 3-1 lead in minutes to a rival when we had all the momentum and a reverse sweep seemed like it was about to come true

Next season we have Burns, Orlov, Roslovic, Hall, Anderson off the books. Projected 38.7mil cap space for signing players. Likely ~13.5 for Rantanen (that would requires an offer of 15.4 aav for any team to match), bring Alexander Nikishin to America, find a bottom six forward and third pair defensemen that fit the team, or bring in some of the great prospects! That leaves ~21.2 for a good goaltender (Hill?) and a top six forward or two (ex: Gourde, Olofsson, offer sheet Kakko). In summation, the Canes will probably look better next season than they do now.

This team isn't Cup or bust. They're going into next season with $35 to $40 million in cap space, they have two good young d-men coming in on rookie contracts next year (Nikishin and Morrow, and Nikishin is generally considered the best defenseman in the world who is not in the NHL), they're getting good rookie minutes out of Blake and room for Bradley Nadeau to make the jump to the NHL next year. This team is set up to be good for the next 10 years, they are not concerned with Cup or bust cycles, they're trying to be the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NHL where they're always good,, they always make the playoffs, and occasionally they're good enough to have championship hopes. I'd way rather have that than a team with a Cup or bust mentality, because that gives you a built in excuse if you suck the next year. That's not how winning organizations operate. I will say I'm not sold on Rantanen at $13 million, 8 years, because I don't see the physical effort yet in his game that I expect to see from a Canes forward. In this system, everybody goes balls out in the offensive zone for puck support. If you're not supporting the puck, you're rotating back to cover a defensive position. And I've seen Rantanen do a fair bit of standing around. If he doesn't adapt to the system, Tulsky will be happy to spend that money on another big fish in the UFA market. It would be better if Rantanen did live up to their faith in him, but if he doesn't, it's not the end of the world.

I really like Eric Tulsky so far as Canes GM. He's seen that the Canes haven't been able to get over that hump in the playoffs... so instead of carrying on the same formula that has failed us every season in the playoffs, he's willing to actually try something new, like signing a legitimate superstar player to a big contract. There should be enough cap space this year to get it done, so I see no reason whatsoever that Tulsky wouldn't be willing to pull the trigger on a big Rantanen contract.

You know, I would agree that the Canes are a great team. Brind a'mour is a solid coach, probably one of THE best in the NHL. What people don't know is that the Canes are one of the worst offenses in the NHL, often times finishing dead last on shots per goal. Brind A'mOur is both a blessing and a curse, and if it isn't his fault for their weakness of finding time and space, then whoever is needs to be fired immediately. I'm not saying this because I just think it, I know it. They've had too much talent come and go over the years, just to play like this. The system is probably more responsible than any one coach that we have. Rantanen is drying up because of how the Canes play offense. That is why Guentz left, it affects your marketability.

We're gonna be a contender for aboutt the next decade. The core is in their 20s plus Nikishin, Nadeau, Artamonov, Morrow, FUS. Also we are able to pay Rantanen this year unlike Guentzel. The Colorado Avalanche are my first & favorite team, the Hurricanes are my 2nd team because they’re in the East. Both teams started building out their defenses around the same time. I will say, Colorado’s higher end talent on defense carries them a bit further than Carolina’s and I think Colorado’s defense is better than Carolina. That said, defensively, not just offensively, I think Carolina is absolutely best in the NHL and it’s a no contest. But in the modern, while defense is important, a defense that can produce can help mitigate production from forwards and while Brent Burns is still playing decently, the Hurricanes defense is much better at preventing goals than creating them. Shayne Gostisbehere is a monster and fits super well just like he did a couple of trade deadlines ago. They could probably use a more productive defensemen, and then they’d absolutely wear the crown of best defense in the NHL, over Colorado.

The canes can get to the finals, they just need to get through the Caps. If they were in the west, i doubt it. Getting through Edmonton, Dallas, Vegas, The Wild and LA depending on how they're playing... unlikely. So they are a cup team, but I doubt they're a championship team. As an Avs fan that watches every game, Rantanen is amazing but is not the franchise superstar people are saying he is.

Rantenen is not looking good on the canes, he simply isn't fitting right now compared to what he can do. And anyone who is saying Rantenen is better then Necas we'll i challenge you at the end of the year to see, I guarantee he has as many points as Rants did consistently on this team.

@jimmyhockey I just meant by getting players to build around a core and doing it successfully, especially if they resign mikko, guess it's early to say but the moves Nashville made around their core didn't seem to work. I get it's through trade and not signing but they made the right move

Some of you delusional Canes fans think this is the move that will put you over the top haha... you will make it to the playoffs every year but will never win a cup... you are not deep enough down the middle and your D core is much weaker than last year... I will most definitely be back here after you get bounced again 💯... the Avs won the trade by a country mile.

Canes aren’t going to pay $14m for Moose. They weren’t willing to pay Guentzel $9m
@pf7338
@pf7338 6 күн бұрын
Completely different cap situation last offseason, different GMs, different levels of players (Guentzel is not Rantanen). If I remember correctly, the Canes did end up offering Guentzel what he wanted but he turned around and took it with Tampa anyway. The Canes have the space to offer Rants what he's worth, the ball will be in his court to accept it or not.
@carriecronin959
@carriecronin959 5 күн бұрын
Why not? Canes don’t overpay for solid pieces yet they seem to be considered cheap. Canes are overall deep. They will have $35-40M with 14 current players locked in and Nikishin (High Russian prospect Dman) coming in May, plus other prospects. We will pay $14M for Moose, TD owner tired of being close with deals and losing. What other cup contending team can add a $14M player? He wants to win now, not hope a team like Chicago gets dominant in a few yrs or have 4 player top heavy team and no depth ( see Toronto can’t make it past 1st round).

Carolina will get exposed in the playoffs again... these stat guys running teams will get your team to the playoffs every year because goals win games and their obsession with those differentials... but ultimately it's your defense and goaltending that win you the cup... watch and see.

you clearly know nothing about the Canes or their roster/struture/philosphy, they are a defense first team. They are not going to get knocked out of the playoffs because they didn't play defense. what a brain dead take, boss

Based on what REALLY?? I think he is actually more likely to sign with them than any other team at this point. The Canes org have shown him massive respect right out the gate in every way and shown they want him and are willing to pay AND SACRIFICE (the lambs named Necas and Drury) for him - something his previous team failed to do. We aren't even getting into the "Aho factor"... Raleigh has become an awesome place to live - especially if you plan to have a family. It's also predicted to be in the top two national economic development zones along with DFW area for the next 3 decades - unless you for some dumb reason love cramped metro clutter It's the place to be. It's a smart place to be and this Moose ain't dumb.
