😮Dax comes off a bit condescending here (not his fault, but of the people that told him stuff). So as someone who was born and raised in an Indian city and is now living in the US, let me set some context - In all parts of the country, it is unsafe to drink tap water. However, almost every household in Indian cities have electronic water purifiers installed. So if you go to somebody's house in India, absolutely drink the water they offer. It is probably much more purified than what comes from the Brita filter in the US. Also, the vegetables don't come pre-washed in India, unlike grocery stores in the US. However, literally every household in India washes the vegetables clean before cooking/serving. Don't eat vegetables off the shelf of a grocery store for sure but please don't make a mockery of your Indian host by refusing to eat if they offer you vegetables.

As an American staying with my Indian partner’s family in Odisha at the same time as Dax, I feel this misrepresents India. My hosts suggested that I avoid street food that might be made from tap water, however I absolutely would have had chai that was BOILING, thus bacteria free. Also, as someone else has commented, most homes have purified water, in which case it as absolutely fine to drink. I understand that this was meant to be humorous, but it is frustrating to see India misrepresented on national television.

It's insane to me in 2024 people are still talking about India being a place where you cannot eat or drink safely. I spent 3 weeks travelling all over India and only got an upset stomach once and that was my own fault as I had water from an unknown source on a train and it wasn't even that bad. If you are in a restaurant or hotel then water and food will 💯 be tourist friendly. Especially if it's a hotel or event Bill Gates is at.
