Whenever I see people like Adin Ross, Tate, or anyone in the "freedom of speech" crowd who seem to get boners for hate speech, I'm reminded that there's no way to tell the age of audiences online. I always get the feeling that the vast majority of the base for this type of content is lonely teenage boys in sheltered communities who are just looking for ways to feel cool and tough and like they have some battle they're fighting.
@mattsterh7740 Жыл бұрын
Do you honestly think corporations/governments actually care about dumbasses saying the nword online? The whole hate speech laws are to control conversation and shut down people who exposes the bad shit they do. This is like the articles on the recent document leaks are all focused on the low level coastguard being a "racist" rather than important things like the government using special forces in a war that has not been approved by congress, a clear breach in the constitution.

Quite literally this. Twitch Chat (and now Kick Chat) has the cognitive profile of a 14-19 year old suburban boy who is a socially inept/an outcast at school. it's the classic "i'm edgy and cool because I go against the grain and say things i shouldn't" stuff that used to stay on 4chan decades ago. The "W Community" which is mostly middle/upper-middle class teens with strong linguistic influences from hood-gangster "something to prove"/"chip on shoulder" personality types... is the bulk of the viewers. I am pro Freedom of Speech myself, but I am in the _adult_ end of the spectrum, where freedom of speech means that society just devolves into mob rule or autocracy without it, and while you do have the freedom to be an ass, you do not have the freedom to do so without consequence. And for that... i'm not a part of the crowd that says "freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of consequence (except for me because i'm above consequence)," which is equally as cringe. Kick isn't actually pro-free speech per their ToS. Their ToS is actually more vague (meaning they can ban for mroe things because vague rules are easier to stretch). They just don't actually enforce it because they're trying to gain market share. The 95% split won't last either becauase as a gambling company that is now serving gambling ads/sponsorships to a primary audience of minors..... there's no way they don't get regulated into the ground at some point. TL;DR: Kick will not become a thing in its current form, because Kick is a company who's primary profit center is exploiting vices, _not_ a company that is genuinely interested in streaming gaming/other creative content. The only reason it exists is because a big streamer had a meltdown and threw a hissy fit over not being able to tacitly get his mostly-minor audience addicted to off-shore crypto gambling scott-free. The entire premise of Kick's existence is disingenuous at best, compared to what they "say" they exist for. Mixer had more of a leg to stand on than Kick will ever have.

People forget that streaming platforms are for all intents and purposes a public space and although freedom of speech is a thing you don't go around in public being an asshole to random people for no reason. If you couldn't/wouldn't say something to someone's face irl it has no place in a stream that anyone can just drop into either.

@NigraeLegiones Жыл бұрын
Actually freedom of speech has nothing to do with anything here. Streaming platforms are private companies and can decide what they will and wont allow on their services. Plus another big factor that it seems like a majority of people forget and idk why "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." A Private company IS NOT the government or congress. Freedom of speech does not apply here nor will it ever.
@andrewneal3594 Жыл бұрын
@@NigraeLegiones Though the issue often comes with said platforms constantly moving the goalposts, claiming to be private companies in some situations and "public platforms" in others, often for financial benefit. Twitter is a great example of this when it came to messing with American elections

@andrewneal3594 that's not moving the goalposts. They are a private company that has opened up their service to the public provided your follow the terms for using their service. While you talk about people being socially conscious, there is also the idea of toxicity. Basically, if you get a rep for being uncool, or a place where losers/assholes hangout, then you run the risk of losing audience because no one wants to be associated. This is how places like myspace died. If Kick only attracts assholes and incels, then who wants it known that they watch kick?

the fact is that "incel" is a misandrist, feminist buzzword used by wokes to attack any guy who disagree with their distorted views of reality. so, it will most probably the opposite: most normal guys will choose places like kick cause the mainstream flawed narrative will tell them to not do it.

I remember hearing about another social media a long time ago (I forget what it's called unfortunately) that was basically the same concept as Kick but with Twitter instead of Twitch. From what I heard, that site just devolved into a cesspool of bigotry and generally harmful ideas. Because, huge surprise, the people who benefit most from sites like that are generally bigots who got banned for being a bigot. And when I heard about Kick, my mind immediately went back to that. The issue is people taking things in extremes. KZbin and Twitch have issues with over-moderation, where even relatively minor things (and even things that aren't your fault in the first place) get you demonetized and banned. The solution to that is not removing moderation entirely. There is a middle ground. Moderate the site to ensure people aren't using it to spread harmful ideas, without then also throwing people under the bus because they dare decide to swear in the first 15 seconds.

Can you define hate speech? Some people view the truth as hate speech. If I make a tweet that says "Elon Musk Is A Criminal", you might see that tweet as me just tweeting the truth, but Elon Musk himself can view that tweet as "hate speech". The main problem here is platforms like KZbin and Twitch don't apply their rules equally to everyone. If KZbin came out and said "You are not allowed to say those words and anybody who says those words would be banned, NO EXCEPTIONS" then the majority of the people would complain a lot less, because now they know what words they can't say and they know the rules will be applied to everyone but in reality that doesn't happen and that is what causes all this animosity.

As someone who's streamed to a few viewers here and there on twitch it's twofold. It's not just the 50-50 split [which is again reduced by tax, both american and wherever you live]. [You earn £100 is subs? You get £50, but that £50 is taxed at 7% in the US so you get 46.50. But then your country taxes it further, so it gets hit with 20% in the UK £37.20 actual pay.] So that's pretty bad, especially when you scale it up. But what's really atrocious is the lack of discoverability. On youtube you make content on a game? KZbin provides discoverability by connecting your content to threads of other content similar and recommends it. This means if you make decent content you can grow quick. I have a few vids on another channel with 17k views for example. On twitch you have to pray that you get recommended. It used to be based on viewer count so it was exceptionally hard, now middle tier streamers are promoted a bit more. Now the recommended stuff is based on viewership being 15 or higher. This means that to grow on twitch you have to make content offsite to funnel traffic to your page, artificially inflate your numbers with embedding a le Fextralife, bot followers/viewers or hope that every person that pops in sticks around after being hit with 6 30s ads. The ratio for consistent viewers by the way is 1:150 For every 150 followers you'll have 1 consistent viewer and whilst it's not a hard and fast rule you can check yourself on most of the popular streamers their current viewers to their follow count. It's always 1:100/1:150. So you get piss poor pay, paying tax in a country that you dont work in, have to make double the content both on platform and off to draw in viewers, have to watch yourself to not say anything riské and get cancelled or have a bad moment whilst doing this for hours a day, all year round. Or you can make content on youtube, stream for a few hours, chop the video up on youtube itself for shorts/highlights or leave it long form and it will bake its way into the algorithm to be picked up by anyone. And the people that see that will be trafficked into your stream. When the stream ends they'll be trafficked straight into your videos. Not to mention sponsorships and ads do not invade the video/streaming experience by interrupting the live content.

At the moment I do not see kick as any different then the adult site I stream to and since safe for work content may be more expected it may be a place for me to stream that content. With some loose guidelines kick could easily become like rumble and succeed with letting people speak what they think. Sunlight is the best disinfectant as they say so it is good that the ideals you find evil have a place to be seen and to then be discussed.

"Free Speech Platforms"? Which platforms would that be? KZbin, Facebook, and Twitter these popular social media sites used to be a Free Speech Platform when they 1st started and look how popular they became. So that title is automatically incorrect, but let's play your game and pick the new platforms like Kick and Rumble. Those 2 platforms have seen a huge increase in their profits in the last year. Rumble, I have seen videos that have reached 6 figures in views. That is huge for a platform that isn't part of the mainstream. I can't see Rumble disappearing. Besides, it was never expected for platforms like Rumble to overtake their competition in 1 day. It took KZbin YEARS to become what it has become. So the same is expected for Rumble and Kick. If I'm being optimistic I'm expecting Rumble to be a serious competition in 5-10 years. You said that those platforms need to appeal to advertisers, if they do that, then how are they any different from KZbin and Twitch?? Kick will just become Twitch 2.0. You might as well just stay on Twitch. If your biggest source of revenue comes from your customers instead of advertisers, it gives you more control and that is much better. If advertisers become your biggest source of income then you are just a slave to the advertisers, not sure how that can be seen as positive. You're basically working with a gun to your head.

"KZbin, Facebook, and Twitter these popular social media sites used to be a Free Speech Platform when they 1st started and look how popular they became." You probably don't realize it but you've just listed the most popular sites in the world and shown that moderation has made them what they are, while all the "free speech" platforms (and by which you actually mean hell holes of violence, hatred, ignorance and stupidity) are still basically nothing more than slums no one wants to visit. And I shouldn't have to point this out, but US law is irrelevant in the UK, Australia, Canada, EU... Your convoluted notions of the "First Amendment" have absolutely no bearing outside of your own borders, which is why none of your "free speech absolutist" platforms will ever overtake the globally available online platforms complying with reasonable laws outside of the US.

I don't think this video is an endorsement of Kick lol

@@ct5625 Can you show proof that moderation is what made them what they are? If what you say is true, then why are people always complaining about those platforms. Why is everyone trying to look for alternatives? Back in the 2000s no one was looking for alternatives. People were fune with just using KZbin You didn't disprove what I said all you did is make assumptions and fake accusations you cant even prove.

@@WiloPolis03 I have no idea why you are saying that. I never implied that this video is an endorsement of Kick.

you can argue that despite twitch being advertiser friendly on paper, if you actually looked into the faces of twitch rn and their communties. youll see they are just as hateful, except its under the guise of social justice. believe me, society is catching up and seeing through the bs and eventually advertisers wont be so scared of backlash, which will conveniently be around the time you start to switch your entire narritive. cos people like you dont care about the context or the truth, cos this topic is way more complex.

"Harmful" is subjective, and using this narration over top the Ben Shapiro video clip and the snippet of that video title is... just outright manipulative. Joe Rogan's treatment regimen has long since been found to be effective for many people, while the "government supported" medicines have proven to have little to no effect for most people (most people were never in critical condition and were not at serious risk of going into critical condition). Further, Rogan's support for a human-grade treatment, does not make him at-fault for people erroneously pursuing the large-animal-grade version, OR for seeking to self-administer a complex treatment plan without the supervision or approval of a trained and licensed healthcare professional. Careful.... using editing tricks to subliminally convey your political and social slants.... while perfectly within your right, does paint you as manipulative, untrustworthy, and having low journalistic integrity in the construction of this argument. Even though you are not a journalist.... these sorts of tactics are CNN-levels of "obviously biased but we just don't say the quiet part out loud because we want plausible deniability". People aren't that stupid and you shouldn't base your content around sleights like this. If you have a point, let it stand on it's own without using it to essentially slander others, impugn their character, or "poison the well" to "discredit via character assassination" instead of actually challenging the ideas directly. Having just watched your Illuminaughty video, i'm disappointed to see some parallels drawn between you two.
