In last week's video we got the vintage Yamaha DT100 / LT2 running and this week we make it roadworthy and safe by troubleshooting the gas tank, petcock, air filter, lights, and more. Then - best of all - we take it for a ride!
If you’ve enjoyed this video I hope you’ll give it a “like” and will consider hitting that subscribe button! Have a comment or thought? Please leave it below…comments are always encouraged and appreciated. For more content you can also follow me on Instagram at / jimmytmoto and at my website, jimmytmoto.com .
This channel is for motorcycle riders, mechanics, and enthusiasts who enjoy the simple joys of motorcycling, from dual sport riding to fixing up old bikes on a budget. My videos also consider the perspective of short motorcycle riders (when it’s helpful and relevant) in choosing and modifying bikes and equipment.
I’ve been hooked on motorcycles since 1975 when, at the age of 11, my dad brought home a shiny new Suzuki TM75 for me and a Suzuki TC185 for himself so that we could trail ride together in the hills of West Virginia. Since then I’ve worked as a mechanic, owned countless bikes, and even worked in the motorcycle industry for a number of years as a photographer and journalist. Now I do mainly video production and enjoy nothing more than making and sharing these motorcycle videos on KZbin.
Thanks again for watching. Ride safe!

Great video, I am a 62 year old man, I remembered that bike well. We were too poor but I had a lot of motorcycle magazines. This video brings back old memories, I will start looking for one .Thanks for the video

That's the exact bike I had. Same color too. I was 14. Threw many a newspaper from it.

I had the exact same bike and I can tell you that even when it was new it only went about 50 mph. It is considered a trail bike so it is geared pretty low on purpose. That's just the way it was meant to be. I bought mine at 13 years old so for a young kid, 50 mph was pretty fast. If you want a bike good for the highways you just have to get a bike that's a little bigger. In my opinion, the bike was built for young teenagers.

You are wrong about the top speed. It was made from the factory for a 72mph top speed and I have had three of them. For sure it goes 72mph. The speedo reads 80 mph and I was always trying ways to make it go faster than 72 but could not. ( without overbore)

@@worldsnextsupercar4362 I also had a brand new 125 Enduro in 1976 and top speed on it was about 60. So if you were getting 72 from the 100 then someone either changed the front or back sprocket or maybe put a different air filter or something. Yamaha made a 100cc twin street bike back then and maybe it could get close to 70.

Awesome. That was my first bike in ‘73.Removed lights, added an expansion chamber and knobby tires. Changed fenders ,bars ,pegs etc. Still had green tank and a habit to pitch me over the bars. Sold it and bought a Honda cr 125 Elsinore. Keep up the good work

Great video, i rode and raced DT, RT & AT Yamahas in the early 70s. In 1986 i got a red DT 100 a 76 model i think, and fixed it up for my wie to learn on. My wife never became a rider but my kids learned to ride on that little 100.. I kept it running through the 90s and passed it on to a nephew. I love those old Yamahas! These days I ride a 1200 sportster a hopped up Buell Blast and an XT225 Yamaha for which I have enjoyed your videos as well. Keep up the good work! i

Hi Jimmy, great video series on the LT2! Once winter hits you should probably replace the crank seals, at least the one behind the points. If you aren't burning tranny fluid the one on the clutch side might be good for now.

I use Superclean to get the varnish and gas residue out of the tank. Then I use full strength muriatic acid to remove the rust. Then if I feel it needs to be coated, I use Caswell fuel tank sealer. But I typically won't coat a tank unless there are tiny pinholes in it. For exhaust pipes I plug one end, then stand the pipe up vertically and fill it full of Superclean, and let it soak a couple of days. Then flush it out with a water hose. It is so much fun to ride and work on bikes like that than the absolute nightmare of trying to work on a computerized late model bike. You would never be able to bring one of those back to life after all that time. They are built to be disposable. I would love to have a 2 stroke motorcycle, but I do have a 1979 Vespa P200E 2 stroke manual shift manual clutch scooter. Pretty much all the parts are readily available for those.

I REALLY enjoy your channel. I'm in WV and understand you are from here. I'm mostly interested in an XT250. It's easy to get sidetracked, going to wanting a 300 dual-sport, then DRZ400, then one of the 650s. In the end, I'm older and happy not going fast, always end up back to the XT250. If only I could find a used one that someone thought wasn't big enough! Thanks for the videos.

Thanks Jimmy. Great to see how you addressed all the issues. I don't have your history of early 100cc bikes, so I'm not as tuned into this kind of retro vibe. But I'm very tuned into your XT225 for it's all round capabilities. How is that project coming along? Did you finally get all the replacement parts needed to make the repairs? Gord

The smoke is from the 2 stroke oil. Is your pump isnt adjusted right it will mix the oil in too rich and smoke more.

The top speed is 72 mph from the factory. I have had three of these bikes and currently have two of them. It goes 72 mph for sure. Check your sprockets and see if someone previous put a larger sprocket for climbing hills on it. Possible.I used to drive this bike on the freeway when I was 11 years old , no helmet, going 72 mph , crouched position trying to make it go faster. That was in Darby Montana, I rode this same bike on Chief Joseph Ranch ( Where they film "Yellowstone" ) and flew on the freeway up toward town. Koolest times ever. I jumped too many ant hills and large jumps and cracked the frame and the forks fell off. I hid the bike from my Dad when I broke it in half. He thought someone stole it....lol ! Nah, just your rebel kid. Peace

What do you suggest if I have a hole in the tank? I think I left the vinegar in the tank too long and it appears to have eaten through part of the tank. Can it be welded? This might be above my pay grade.

why get a moped over waiting until one got enough money for both a MC card and a real motor cycle? is a moped enough on the country side, speed, and distance wise.. I am worried it won't get me in time where I need to be.. but I might be wrong.. there is a charm to the small four stroke mopeds I really like! but the speed to get in time to where you wanna go and how far they can go on a tank makes me wonder if over time it will be practical enough.. but in comparison to the e bike mopeds it sure reachers the double distance..
