Jim, I bought a banjo about 10 years ago and struggled every time I tried to learn until now. Your lessons are excellent and within 2 weeks time of practicing for about an hour a day I am playing Cripple Creek! Yes, I’m playing slowly and with a few mistakes here and there, but light years ahead of where I was previously. Thank you for the awesome Christmas present of music!!

Well Mr. Pankey, thank you. It has been literally four days since I picked a banjo up for the first time in my life and I am absolutely shocked to hear myself already playing cripple creek, and I have your teaching to thank. It came natural to me, been listening to bluegrass all my life and dreamed of playing the banjo, at 26 you are helping me realize that dream. Thanks again, I can't wait for the future.

God bless you, sir. I've had a banjo for about 25 yrs. I never could get any help to even try and learn to play. Let me say this, you have inspired me to pick it back up. Thank you!! After spending a couple of hours with you, I have finally started picking, playing, somewhat. I will never forget you for making it simple enough for me to figure it out. I hope you see this message. I know it is a few years old. Once again, sir, God bless you!

Jim, just found you on KZbin yesterday. I am a pretty rank beginner but love your style of teaching. I worked on Lesson 3 yesterday and lesson 4 today. When you challenged us at the 8:50 mark on lesson 4 to play all the way thru I was still having a little difficulty. You have probably mentioned this to your students in the past but You Tube allows you to play at less than full speed by tapping on the three dots in the top right corner (on my iPad). This helped me a lot to be able to play along with you. I am a new subscriber. Thank you so much.

I can’t believe it. First I was shocked to being playing something that was even remotely melodic, from lesson 3. Now I’m basically playing an entire song!? Mind blown. All thanks to a teacher who posted KZbin videos. Never played an acoustic in my life (played some violin as a teenager, that’s all). This one was a little tricky for me. Putting all the different parts together in sequence was really confusing. I used rewind and slow playback a lot.

Jim, you are an awesome instructor! Often when learning something new, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. When we don't get where we think we should be and in the time frame we think we should , we get frustrated and ultimately quit. You are so patient and understand people learn at different rates. You put no pressure on your students (KZbin watchers) so they can succeed. I have succeeded in learning to play Cripple Creek! I have always loved bluegrass and the banjo. At 56, I can play! The only way I can thank you is to practice, practice, practice and learn more songs. Thank you! I look forward to more videos from Uncle Jim.

Jim, just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of “thank you” for posting these lessons. I had 2 prior failed attempts at learning to play the banjo when I was in high school and college. A combination of poor instruments and only a Mel Bays book for instruction pretty much doomed the effort. I'll start with, I'm 50. Played the Saxophone for 8 years growing up. High school graduation came and went and so did the Sax playing. Still have it though. I built an airplane that I aim to do some airplane camping with. That was a three year endeavor. What's better than a banjo to take out to the sticks around a campfire? With time on my hands now that the build is finished I figured an instrument would be a lot more rewarding than sitting in front of the TV. Anyhow, I watched these instructional videos and can relate to Jim's style I guess. He inspired me to the point of asking the girlfriend for a banjo for Christmas. I am learning from books that were included with the Banjo purchase but it gets boring. I come to Jim and I feel that learning is much more enjoyable with him. I laughed when I read someone compare Jim to Bob Ross. That is a huge compliment actually and I can't agree more. Thank You Jim!

I was probably about 9 when I got my first guitar. Messed around on it for a short while before I lost interest because I couldn't seem to figure it out. Got a drum set when I was about 13 and basically used it as anger management, never even attempting to learn it. I'm now 31 and after a short conversation with my dad months ago, about how interesting the history of the Banjo is. My dad surprised me with a Banjo for Christmas. I own a small retail shop and find myself with quite a bit of free time on slow days at the shop. I've brought my banjo to the shop every day since I've got it and have amazed myself at the progress I've made in such a short period of time and it's all thanks to you. Jim, I've just got to say, you are an absolutely amazing teacher. I just turned 18 a few days ago and got a banjo for my birthday. I've always loved bluegrass music and that carried over to me wanting a banjo. I've been playing guitar since I was 8 or so, and I've got to say, even though this song is not difficult at all to what I can play on guitar, I probably had more fun learning from your videos than I have for any song I've learned on guitar. Thank you so much for making these videos! I'll definitely be watching a lot more of your videos!

Hi Jim; I bought my first banjo about 35 years ago, a Fender Leo, and after about 21 years I had to give it up due to certain health issues. I'm almost 71 now and I picked it up again and now I'm following your amazing lessons here on KZbin, but I have to keep repeating them due to awfully painful arthritis issues. (I'm only on lesson 2 to 3 at the moment). However, I'm not giving up because I've come to really enjoy your teaching style. I'm re-learning Cripple Creek and having fun doing it. After that, I'll work on some other old favorites. If I can get my old hands loosened up a little I should be able to play Cripple Creek in another month or so. Thank you very much for these lessons Jim, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you providing them. I feel as though you're speaking directly to me (especially when you look right into the camera the way you do), and that personal touch really helps a lot. So, thanks again Jim, and God willing, we'll see you on lesson 3 just as soon as I finish lesson 2 properly. Bye the way, you're a great teacher and a huge inspiration.

Jim, the way you put these together step by step, and reminding us to master each little part before moving on, is fantastic. Video 4 was amazing to be able to put together all of the parts I have been working on for weeks to master, into a real multi part song. Its helpful when you play it though slow and fast to show what it will eventually sound like. And when you sing along, its really helpful for us remember the melody. These have been so great for me. Thank you SO much. I am hooked. Thanks for your generosity.

Well, you're still decidedly the best! You teach at a great pace, and I love how you break each step down, talk us through just enough, and then play it. Excited to keep going through these!

Jim, I just love your style! I've just started tinkering with the Banjo, but, my father played the Banjo and, it's hard to follow his act! But, after watching your videos on KZbin, I feel a lot more confident about playing the Banjo! Kudos my friend! Right now, I'm jamming with my GRETSCH GUITAR! I love my Gretsch guitar! Oh yeah, what Banjo do you recommend for me? A beginner?

These videos have helped me so much! I take notes on the song orders and practice them whenever. Really quality, helpful, and fun lessons that are so easy to understand but actually teach you how to play. I couldn't ask for a better teacher. Thank you Jim!!!

Jim, just a quick message to say thank you for these lessons. After playing acoustic guitar most of my life, I was given a banjo that used to belong to my Aunt after she passed away recently. So, I'm trying to learn how to play in her honor. I just completed lesson 4. I find you very easy to follow, and I'm doing pretty well so far. I look forward to more instruction from you on lesson 5 and beyond. Thank you once again. Take care!

Just wanted to add for brand new banjoists, like me. If it is hard to distinguish finger movements ,or just need to slow things down, you can click on the 'gear icon' in the video window, go to SPEED,and change from NORMAL,to .5 (which is half speed). This has really help me in a few spots. Thank You much Jim,for the great detailed videos, too. For not having ever owned a musical instrument in my life, am fast becoming a bluegrass superstar. At least the dog is listening to all I can dish out. The Mrs, seems impressed too, well at least in my mind she is. ha ha,
