What you said about the quality of the time you spend vs just the amount of time you spend in the game really resonated with me. As I've gotten older, I put less and less stock in how much content a game has. I'd rather have a high quality 15 hour game than a mediocre 50 hour game.

This. I saw somebody complain that Village was too short. First play-through, with full loot goblin tendencies, nets you about an average of ten hours of game-play for the game itself (not counting Mercenaries). There's next to no filler (although they could have filled out the non-Dimitrescu/Heisenberg sections a bit more) in the game. It tells its story, it scares you and then it lets you move on to either replay it (as several of my friends have done) or other games. It doesn't waste your time, it doesn't make you feel overwhelmed with useless content. It does what it's supposed to do and then GTFO's and lets you do what you want. I'm sick of super long games that expect me to bleed valuable time for them just because they want to brag that their games can last fifty hours.

Yep. It's like "satirical" games that mock the conventions of their genre. They comment on things - like "isn't it daft in RPGs that defeated bats drop gold coins and potion bottles?" - but at the end of the day they still *do* those things, believing that if you wink to camera as you do so then you get to bypass all criticism. If that were true then all any cliche-ridden film would have to do is have a character turn to camera and say "This is all a bit sh*t, isn't it?" and suddenly the film wouldn't be cliched cr*p anymore - it would be instantly transformed into a knowing and ironic satire of lazy material. If only it were that easy.

Though it pains me, I agree with everything said (with the exception of there being only one type of puzzle, there are at least two other underutilized varieties tucked away in distant corners), and there are indeed hints of something greater that could have been that you pick up on while playing it. The developers seem to be genuinely hard at work with bugfixes and minor improvements and appear to be receptive to feedback, but I fear that might not be enough. A lot of the game feels like a series of placeholders, each of which, interestingly enough, can be easily replaced with something better and more engaging without refactoring the whole game. I really didn't want to draw a comparison to No Man's Sky, but If neither the gamers nor the developers give up on this game, there is still hope for it.
@scalpingsnake3 жыл бұрын
I would love the game to 'pull a no mans sky' but I don't see that happening. They had no plans to update Biomutant (other than patches) and I just don't see them reworking core systems which is what they need to do. The main issues are the repetitive quests so they would almost have to go back to the drawing board for that. The combat needs significant overhauls and just more options. They would need to do a load of small incremental changes too. To me that sounds possible only in 'Biomutant 2' or maybe if they work on some sort of definitive edition? but that begs the question would we have to pay for it? if not will they think it's worth the time and money.

Hearing how copypasty the game was, I thought that it was maybe, in fact, TOO ambitious, like too big of a map they wanted to fill, etc. But it looks like when devs try to achieve certain ambitions (typically map size, raw quantity of missions, or inflating the time to 100% the game) they abandoned others, like what you said, meaningful choices etc. And I think the public is divided on what is actual positive ambition, some people obviously preferring quantity over quality (even though they do because the quality is good enough for them). I can see this game entertaining a moderate number of fans who'll get 100s of hours out of it, but I'm almost certain it did/will underperform "commercially" (not gonna cry for THQ Nordic tho). BTW, the pre-order bonus which seemingly tricked a lot of people into pre-ordering Biomutant before knowing anything on how potentially boring the game could be, and it was foreshadowing I think (easier to say with insight but eh).

"No Man's Sky"'s basic mechanics aren't all that improved over the original moving and shooting on foot is largely the same although they did add weapon variety and gave the boltcaster more character by making it a burst fire weapon. Space combat, well it works as it always had, but it is still as unengaging as ever. At least they added a few weapons that help make it go faster. It is just that there is a lot more stuff in the game that makes the basic mechanics merely minor obstacles in the inventory and base crafting game it has become. Oh I know, Biomutant could add structure building to the game and leverage ideas from the weapon crafting system to enhance and customize building upgrades. If action isn't up to snuff, then one can always add crafting and base building to make a game have something to do. Love the exploration loop, the fun loot, how there's always areas that require me to get another upgrade equipment upgrade by doing some odd job for a weird-looking critter; the combat took a bit to get to grips with, but it's an RPG- as you level up and unlock more skills/combos, it becomes all about chaining combos and getting to trigger your "slo-mo-beatdown mode" to make combat look flashy; The art style is certainly its own thing- I call it "rabies in a plushie store". The "lush post-apoc" is cool setting, and the story.... well, it's standard wuxia tripe, complete with "your parents were killed when you were young when an evil kung-fu master/angry wolf-thing burned down the temple compound because "your mother's dark past was catching up with her". So now you've got a revenge story, on top of saving the world. I've been playing the game for 25 hours now, and short of finishing the initial tutorials and capturing the fist of many forts in the "tribe wars" subplot (your mother's disciples have formed their own tribes half of which believe they need to re-establish unity and fight the threats to the World Tree together, while the other half believes in survival of the fittest and are "the Dark path"), I've been ignoring all plot, just exploring the world, levelling up my character and doing quests to upgrade my gear and unlock new abilities. It's definitely a game that tries to cram too many systems in for its own good, but I still find it charming. The fact that it's discounted in Canada (only 60 CAD, so like 50 USD) certainly helps to perceive it as a AA game, which is what it is.

Man, I just want a Mutant: Heirs of the Apocalypse game/movie. The setting was pretty fucking amazing. Post-apocalyptic scandinavia re-entering industrialisation and early 19th century technology. Imagine Scandinavian landscape that meets Mad Max in napoleonic era tech and cultural appearance. Mix this in with sci-fi elements that are not out there, like Maser guns, early plasma weaponry, power armour, AI and robotics, and such. Story-wise it is like this Meteors fell from space and devastated civilisation. They brought with them a horrific virus that caused even more destruction. Civilisation on the brink of destruction, nuclear war occured. Humanity that survived fled into bio-bunkers, vast underground shelters the size of cities. Others fled on generation arcs to the stars. Those that stayed in the bunkers continued to wage war using robots, biological weapons, and techno-horrors. Finally humanity emerged when the bunkers no longer functioned, the computer systems dead for centuries perhaps and as there was no industry to support all the advanced stuff, they started re-inventing tech and rebuilding civilisation. Sadly the TTRPG only exists in Swedish, but Mutant: Year Zero is based in the same universe, but earlier.

You guys do know there's an option to turn down the frequency and the amount at the narrator will talk as well as you can change your appearance later on if you find a pacific spot and it doesn't affect your stats. Gameranks did a video of things you should know within the game a few days ago. So far I like the game it's really fun The puzzles are okay they're not mind-blowing which I'm glad I really hate puzzles when I like that and the combat's fun. The story in the music is pretty good but the art style the environment is breathtaking at times as for the characters and hit and miss. That's why when I place her in games I like to look up a little bit of things just in case if I get lost or if I need something to progress through the story that I couldn't find until stumbling upon it or talking to an NPC. I'm okay if some of you guys don't like it or trying to make a joke about it but it's a good game it's not bad it's not horrendous trash like cyberpunk 2077 that was overhyped and it's not anything from EA or Activision.

I decided to give up on the game last night. It really is a shame because I was on the game's side. I wanted it to be good. I want more games to try to do what it's trying to do. And it just... Isn't good. It's a mishmash of half-realized ideas and what aren't necessarily game mechanics, but the idea of those game mechanics. The real red flag for me was the "explanation trailer" that came out before the release, where the speaker talks less about the game's merits and instead compares it to other games. "It's like this game." "You can do X like in this other popular game." It didn't seem like they were confident in the value of their final product.

@FrostiKing3 жыл бұрын
After watching the video and having been playing Biomutant, I got to say... the video is downright deceptive. I mean cute is subjective what Jim considers busywork is subjective. However Jim failed to mention that the developers are listening to fan feedback and alot of his criticisms are being worked on or already fixed, including a few passes at combat to make it feel more impactful, redoing the tutorial, shortening the dialogs so the game progresses faster and there is an option in the menu to turn the narrator and gibberish off if it is such a problem. Also having put quite a bit of time into Biomutant, Jim's never really touches on the crafting or customization, he mentions it, but he uses the Jagni staff, the boomerang, a two handed paddle you pull out of a locker, and the starting gun and the same psi power and bio-engineered power. There is none of the crafting system on display and the weapons he shows are generic stuff the game gives you. I'd argue your not having fun because your not taking the scrap the game gives you and making your own weapon, how about a sick gun that chains between enemies, a radioactive shotgun that shoots saw blades. I am not saying the game is perfect, but the developer is listening to the community and trying to repair the game and the patch we got last night fixed alot of the problems, not all of it of course. They are still working on it, with more to come, that has gone unsaid. If I was playing biomutant like Jim was and going psi-freak and using generic starting stuff..yeah I'd probably be having a bad time with combat too. The Morality system is laughable killing small wildlife isn't the crux of the system but a boost so you can do things like accessing evil psi-powers while playing good or vice versa so the game doesn't cut you off entirely from those if you want to play it good or evil. Also with Jim saying that he doesn't like how his character looks it is true that stats determine appearance. So go big on intellect you get a big head. Jim fails to mention or, didn't even know you can change your looks entirely in game, you can mutate yourself in pools like at the start of the game so you can look however you want without changing your stats, there is also a sidequest with a fur trimmer so you can change colors and fur style if your unhappy with your choices. Also not touched upon was vehicles and vehicle combat, like a massive customizable mech you use to survive the dead zones, a jetski with a grappling hook, a mount with a grappling hook to pull down walls, a massive hand that you can use in combat that shoots with a finger gun and can flick enemies away, a really cool blimp, a helicopter backpack, a suitcase you can use to fly for five seconds, and you fast travel by peeing on signs to remember where you have been. Jim hit level 10 in the video, which is barely a taste of what the game has to offer, what Jim did, is the equivalent of playing about an hours worth of World of Warcraft, and judging the game based on that. Without getting his hands on good weapons, ability, or really exploring alot. This video, is deceptive. Also say what you want about the price, I bought the game, I am having fun with it, I think the price is a little high for what it is, but thats between the developers and THQ, by the by the game was made by a small team of about twenty people in four years ish. Which is about the equivalent to no-mans-sky. The developer is also working on the game based on customer feedback and is already making sweeping changes to the major complaints. Though nothing to fix the teeth though.
