Jim - I have the exact problem on my 2011 Nissan Quest. I have the engine noise only while driving. I thought it was a bearing issue since I did not have a check engine light at that time. I got the P0420 code yesterday. I'm going lift up the car and check for the leak. Thank you again for a great video that will save a lots of money to folks who have the same issue.

Hey Jim! I wonder if my older 2001 Nissan Altima has the same problem. The "service engine soon" came on last October after I filled the gas tank. Nissan turned it off, believing it was a gas cap issue, but it popped back on again. There are no strange smell or noise, but also no exhaust from the tail pipe. It sticks a little on acceleration, drags uphill, and hiccuped once when I stopped at a traffic light. Just as I am about to park it so I don't blow the engine and I cannot afford to replace the cat, I see your video and remember that Nissan's been suggesting that there's a leak somewhere. I didn't think a leak was that important because there were no puddles underneath and the car seemed to run fine. Even though I'm late to the party, thank you for sharing this new perspective. I'll check it out.

This is not only true of Nissan Altima's, any modern car an exhaust leak before the O2 sensors can throw off the O2 sensor readings and cause the engine to run rich (lower mileage) and set erroneous codes for Catalytic Converters or O2 sensors. He is showing the common exhaust leak for the Nissan Altima, which would be different for other vehicles.

There was really not much power. It would push a little, but very slowly. RPM gauge would go straight to 2,000 and just stay there no matter how much pressure was on the gas pedal. We bit the bullet and took it to a shop that replaced the catalytic converter... It is running and is much better, but still not 100%. Thank you for replying! I was not expecting that!

I am trying to pass emissions on a 2004 ford f150 4.6. Got a p2272 error code. Ran a diagnostics, I was told it's not the cat, no exhaust leak, had the fuel injectors and throttle body cleaned, all o2 sensors replaced, as recommended by a mechanic. Light still comes on. Spent 1000s of $ on guess work. However, the mechanic said he'd fix it once and for all. Anyways, it's a shame how scam shops manipulate people that's trying to do the right thing into spending on unnecessary repairs just so they can continue to keep going back, only to have the problem unresolved. Thank you for videos like this and your insight.

Just a hunch the reason that gasket blew out was because the catalytic converter might be so congested and plugged up, the more throttle the more the air needs to flow through a defective plugged up catalytic converter, just by fixing the gasket may cause back pressure into the engine blowing the seals and other components in the engine and causing oil leaks, again it's just a hunch

Put a Japanese import engine in my 06 Altima with 225 k on it. The original engine had worn valve guides. The import engine had a lot of soft carbon probably too many short trips. Getting too many misfire codes. Put two cans of Sea Foam in the gas tank. That fixed the misfire but fouled the converter. I removed the primary O2 senser and sprayed a whole can of Berryman carb cleaner in. That problem went away. I think the misfire problem was being fixed by driving it 50 miles a day on the freeway. I just got impatient.

Proper diagnosis is crucial. I worked for Nissan for 20 years and that 2.5l motor was junk.somewhere in that time frame Nissan came and took our newly delivered cars back and put new motors in them due to oil consumption. Others that slipped through fell under a campaign where we would test pressure build up in the engine to insure there wasn’t too much blow by. We also had converts coming apart and going back into to engine destroying the cylinders, smashing spark plugs etc. It’s always a good idea to remove the top sensor and make sure the cat isn’t braking down, very common. Also drop the pipe and look at the bottom for the same issue. I have replaced more motors than I can count for this. Also any misfires will destroy the converter very quickly. Just things to be aware of. Proper diagnosis is crucial.

Hi Jim, 2002 VW Passat 1.8 Turbo. Code P0420. Car has 207.500 Miles Runs Good No Exhaust Leaks. I am Guessing that I have a Vacuum Leak some where on the Engine. I can Not Hear it and have not been able to Feel it at this Point. My next Step Is to Spray some carb Cleaner around to try and locate a Leak. Also thinking at 207 K Miles it just might be that the Cats 9th Life is about over. What do you think. NO this is not Mine Car, I am just trying to Help someone out. Lol. This Guy Lives On a Dirt Road, You should have seen the Air Filter I am sure I got at least a Cup of Sand out of it. Anyway Changed the AF and Fixed one Hose that was Brittle at that Point I wanted to Drive it to see if Maybe the Light would Go Out, well the Battery was Dead so I got a New one. So now the Light Is Out and I have Driven it about 50 Miles and The Light Remains Off. Now what do you Think.

Almost CERTAINLY a clogged cat. My wife had the exact same issue in her car a number of years back. She ended up driving it several hundred miles back home (was out of town when it failed), and could only do about 30 or so on the highway! When I disconnected the exhaust from the cat, it ran like brand new! But when I hooked it back up, it again ran rough, stumbled, and could only drive slow. When they replaced the cat, they showed me that it was totally melted down/clogged.

its easy to fix and stop the engine management light coming on, it's because the cat is starting to break up and block the exhaust system causing an over rich mixture thats detected by the downstream landa , one of the best ways to fix the engine light problem is to simplify look down the exhaust or up into the manifold and see if it's blocked and running black over rich, if so smash out the blocked cat with a length of steel bar shoved down or up the exhaust system, will mean taking it apart, but you have to be careful not to damage any landa sensors in the process take them out as well if need be, once done disconnect the vehicle's battery to reset the engine management light that's if you don't have a reset tool, once all put back together the management light shouldn't come on and the vehicle will run properly again as an over rich mixture can cause very poor running, to get it through emissions testing next test go become friends with your local garage and bribe them to use another vehicle to stuff the tester up, everybody dose it here in Britain and if you've got the problem you haven't got much to loose by doing this or it's off to the dealership and loose shed loads of money, and the really funny thing is they run better and use less fuel once the cat is gone.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. My 2003 Camry takes a lot of crankings to stay running. It runs for about 3 to 5 seconds, then stops. I have a P0420 . Could this be the reason it takes a lot to stay running? Does anyone know? I was thinking about replacing the sensors. Let me know. Thanks

Hi I'm Keith nice to meet you my wife has a 2011 2.4 ecotec Chevy equinox Lt and it's throwing code p0420 bank 1 low efficiency and the cheapest catalytic converter kit is 1,800 not including labor where would you recommend to start it doesn't have an donut gasket leak like one fixed on this one and I'm in TN so emotions control is to bad here it runs fantastic going but sometimes when you come to a stop light it will start missing you can put it in neutral and it'll quit some times putting it in park it'll stop you can also put your foot on the throttle while at a stop light and it'll stop or instead of missing it'll just shut off but it'll crank right back and iv replaced both vvt silonode's and both cam position sensors and changed oil when I did the vvt silonode's hope to hear from you soon

I add a “gallon” of lacquer thinner to between 5-8 gallons of gasoline. Before oil changes is my rule of thumb , to keep the cats cleaner and clog free. I do it the smarter way. I put a 5 gallon can with fresh fuel in the trunk with the gallon of lacquer thinner. Then with between a quarter to half tank I head to the interstate. At a rest stop or before entering the highway I pure that gallon of lacquer thinner into my gas tank with the engine at operating temperature. I drive with the overdrive “off” until the fuel is nearly depleted. I carry the 5 gallon can with me just in case I need it. I have done this a few times now, and I have not needed it. No sputtering, no hesitation with my engine, 4.6L Mustang 2007. All catalytic converters get dirty then they can get clogged. When they get clogged 2 things could happen; 1. The exhaust pressure could blow the clog out of the system. 2. The exhaust pressure blows the clog along with the internal catalyst materials out of the system. Causing a catastrophic failure. Another problem with dirty catalytic converters is “over heating” a cleaner catalytic converter is less likely to “over” heat.

I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND USING LACQUER THINNER TO CLEAN YOU CATS. YOU WILL CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE TO EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. REMEMBER JUST BECAUSE YOU SEE ANOTHER KZbin POST THAT IT WORK .DON'T BELIEVE IT!!!!

@@jimthecarguy I just finished cleaning a pair of cats with lacquer thinner. Keep in mind I don’t recommend to mix lacquer thinner in a gas tank then park it. It is always best to run it all out immediately. Never ever add it the day or week before running it out… Got it???

@@jimthecarguyThe “easy” wrong -vs- the “hard” right. That is your claim, my claim in this developing situation is; The easy “right” -vs- the harder “wrong” that is more expensive… I have witnessed these emissions equipment and standards evolve since the very beginning in the early 1970’s. Just in case you haven’t noticed, diesel fueled engines now have an emissions system. Diesel engines are dirtier than gas engines. So the diesel manufacturers equip that system with a cleansing fluid that is injected directly into the catalytic converter while in operation (on the road). The diesel emissions system would clog/fail in a very short time if not for that cleansing fluid. Gasoline engines run cleaner than Diesel engines but they are prone to clog/fail in due time. To gain more time with better performance it is advantages to clean (remove the carbon buildup) on the inside of catalytic converters. This “should” be done before a P420 code appears with a check engine “idiot” light. What I understand “your” recommendation is to remove and replace “expensive” dirty catalytic converters. Your justification is weak to charge a costumer an arm or leg for something that is preventable. Preventive maintenance is what I recommend, the proof is the O2 sensor data reported to my scan tool…

Hi I just watched your video, and I must say I def appreciate your honesty and your old school style. I need to bring my 2008 toyota tacoma to your shop.where are you located? Hopefully near Los angeles,California. Heres my issue. My truck was sitting for almost 2 years in lancaster, ( the desert) windy, raining, extreme heat and then cold at nights.so I kept starting it periodically to keep it in shape.it has 181k miles on it.its the 4cyl 4.0 ext cab. So the engine lite goes on, the Day b4 im taking it to get smogged, per dmv. I have the fixd diagnostic tool,so I plug it in and p0420 comes up. Long story short, 1 shop tells me 750 to replace cad converter, another shop tells me 600$, the fixd tell me it's sensor 2 in bank 1, another shop cleared the engine lite told me to drivev60 miles and come back, I'm at my witts end. Please can you help me not get ripped off and get my truck fixed.please Mr Jim auto guy.thanks so much, wendy
