He is Miyamoto Musashi. Hear me out. We all know that Samurai Champloo takes liberties to distort historical accuracies to fit in its eccentric universe. Example: Fuu influencing the young painter to hop on the Dutch ships and his work indirectly inspiring Van Gogh. The introduction of baseball to Japan starting with the main characters' game with the outsiders. And many other episodes/easter eggs. The anime's beauty relies on the fact that it does NOT take its timeline seriously; it thrives off the concept of nostalgia to evoke some of the best storytelling effects for the viewers even if it toys with the timeline of (IRL) history. So, back to the subject. "Johnny"? Come on, the most cliche name possible. Not even Japanese in a Feudal homogeneous Japanese society. When Jin asked for his name, he answered truthfully and in a different tone.. like an unpleasant tone deriving from unwanted memories of an old life. Musashi realized later in life that he was not into killing; he became a pacifist after fighting some of the deadliest wars. In the comments, people have also reported on his odd and unorthodox personality; I can't verify the accuracy of that, but if they're all saying it, it must be from a source. IF Johnny isn't Musashi, he was definitely based off of him as an easter egg. Regardless though, I think that it is him. Musashi is already a revered legend in our books. Who else wins 60 duels against the toughest people and not lose once? History looks at Musashi as one impossibly extraordinary character. If Samurai Champloo intends to keep an accurate timeline and infer that Musashi somehow, someway lived over 200 years in a story where we got samurais doing impossible feats like Kariya, a breakdancing samurai, main characters altering the course of history etc... then, I find it 100% believable.

Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵?, c. 1584 - June 13, 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke or, by his Buddhist name, Niten Dōraku, was an expert Japanese swordsman and rōnin. Musashi, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent and unique double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated record in his 60 duels (next is 33 by Itō Ittōsai). He was the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and in his final years authored The Book of Five Rings (五輪の書 Go Rin no Sho?), a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today.

It's important to remember that this show doesn't give a shit about even attempting historical accuracy. Some things to keep in mind: Musashi died in 1645. The Sunflower Samurai took part in the Shimabara Rebellion which took place between 1637 and 1638. In episode 23, Baseball Blues, the trio plays a game of baseball against a bunch of Americans. America wasn't a thing until 1776, and while it's hard to pin down the exact year modern baseball was invented, it's generally believed to have come about some time in the mid 1800s.

I always loved this scene and I feel it’s very indicative of the Japanese story telling style. One main difference I’ve noticed between eastern and western story telling, ie ghibli vs Disney is that the west loves conclusivity, a happy ending, explicit details-they leave nothing to the imagination. Whereas eastern story telling tends to have this prevailing element of ambiguity, every question doesn’t necessarily have an answer, the ending isn’t necessarily happy. It’s almost as if they’re leaving the quilt barely unknit and leave it up to the viewer to close it up. I like to look at it as circular vs linear storytelling, East and west respectively. Was this Musashi? Maybe, maybe not. And I think that’s exactly the amount of assurance they wanted to give the audience. It’s very telling of the modest nature of etiquette in Japan as well.

In these scenes with Johnny and Jin, Johnny is supposed to represent John the baptist, and Jin, Jesus. Jin was a Christ figure in Samurai Champloo.

Now I dont like how they made him a joke character but the fact that they added musashi that's pretty awesome, I love the lore that has enveloped this person from the past I read his books as well
@shxmana Жыл бұрын
Don't forget that if this was Musashi it would've been him in his later years resigned to the mountains living a simple buddhist life. After all the bloodshed he's seen in his life I wouldn't be surprised if he actually poked fun at people like this to have a laugh with them and besides that he still teaches Jin which makes it quite a balance between acting foolish and giving out wisdom
@raijin1378 Жыл бұрын
@shxmana I suppose you have a point on a valuable lesson, and perhaps he was yanking jin's chain and this could've been in his mid to later years up to the seclusion in that cave. The guy himself tho was an absolute legend never lost a duel to eventually just using sticks instead of a sword which he split a guys head with a boat oar the guy wasn't a joke, I understand some of the tall tales that surround him are fabricated but still had some grain of truth too even wrote a book in those caves to past his philosophical ideals and teaching unto the generations that came after and those principles are even followed in modern days.
@shxmana Жыл бұрын
@@raijin1378 Yeah I know he's an absolute legend as I love his story and his writing having read the book of five rings multiple times and taking a lot of the teachings from it to heart. It is widely said though that he let himself go in his later years when he isolated himself, he barely cleaned himself and looked kinda like a homeless person so if it is actually him in the anime it would be somewhat accurate

Maybe he cast aside he name Miyamoto Musashi after finishing his books and thus laid him to rest. Then he went back to being Shinmen Takezo. I like to think that's what he meant by Musashi being long dead.

Musashi miyamoto. That is a legendary one that would fear anyone out. I was shocked when he said that at a different voice. Shimabara rebellion. Teaching is not about telling or giving instructions. Its about giving an understanding of how things are so the disciple may figure what to do or what its about themselves

Daoist masters supposedly live long lifespans by worshipping and contemplating the Dao. They become Xianren, or Sennin in Japanese, or at least come close to it. So it's no wonder that the show plays with this idea.

@dastanjan3204 жыл бұрын
did anyone realise that Jin”s face was very very unusual at 0:44 and 1:22? Like, in the later one, his face scares me, he looks pretty creepy with that long face and small eyes without his glasses. In the last episode when he fights Kariya his face is SOOOOO ATRACTIVE and handsome! Also during most of the show, his face has some sort of indiferent/ stoic appearence, but here he looks very confused and awkward.
