This is their first refugee experience imagined through the eyes of a child. The three straw characters are from an Ukrainian folktale. Unfortunately Russia has been in conflict with Ukraine since 2014 when they annexed Crimea through a proxy war. The timing switches gives the song dissonance, making listeners feel uneasy like a displaced child. The conflict with Russia actually started in 2014. A lot of people try to make the case that prior to 2022 the conflict going on in Eastern Ukraine was more of a civil war but in reality (admitted now by various Russian officials) it was always an operation of the Russian government. Tatiana's hometown of Horlivka (Russians have different names for many of these towns so they call it Gorlivka) has been within a couple miles of the front line of the conflict since 2014. In fact recently the front has inched even closer to the city since the beginning of what they call the "full scale invasion" in 2022. They had to flee Horlivka for the city of Liviv in Western Ukraine and then Tatiana moved to Kyiv after that. She now lives with her husband Alex in the LA area. The rest of the members were stuck in Ukraine for a time but are now living elsewhere in Europe having been given special permission to tour as cultural ambassadors by the Ukrainaian government.

Actually the conflict was permanent, but after USSR gone it started from early 90's with multiple ships stealings, Ukrainian crimean military units disbandments, bases capturing, and the hugest points with military movements were attempts to declare "independent Crimea" in 1994 which was intercepted by Ukrainian National Guard with AMVs, and Tuzla crisis in 2003. But from at least 1992 there were continuous provokations - Russian warships and aircrafts used to operate without navigation sygnals, Electronic warfare at some moments was everywhere around Ukrainian bases and even civil buildings in Crimea.

All correct, with only the exception is that war initiated not by russian government, but russians specifically. They literally asked government to start this and other wars

Tatiana's mom still lives in Horlivka, in a 5 storey apartment building. That must be unbelievably scary. I can only imagine.

@@ericpeterson7512 No doubt. Buildings in the city get hit on a regular basis. The good news is that unlike the Russians the Ukrainians try to avoid urban warfare so the chances that the city itself will see direct fighting is pretty low.

The video is older than two years because the war in Crimea and eastern Ukraine began in 2014.

It came out 3 years before the "main" war in Ukraine, but the region where they're from in Ukraine has been invaded and been occupied by the Russians since 2014. They fled to Kyiv in 2014 and since the main war in 2022 they were granted special permission to leave to go on tour and have since relocated. Tatiana now lives in Los Angeles with her American husband.

This war started in 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea. They then invaded the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. The band is from Donetsk which has been occupied by Russia since 2015.

This song is actually about the war in 2014 and the annexation of Crimea by Russia. But quite fitting for what is happening now. Fun fact: the Alice in Wonderland segment with the three scarecrows. If you look carefully you will see a pair of eyes moving in the scarecrow to the right. The three guys in the band are in the scarecrow outfits.

besides Crimea thtey also occupied eastern part of Ukraine, including Tati's native town of Horlivka. So that's about the war that started in 2014 and has been going on for almost 10 years

I've been standing next to a stack of speakers at one of their concerts and felt those ultra low growls and her words shake my whole body. As others have said, this is about their hometown getting caught in the 2014 war. The musical composition on their new album started while the guys were trapped in Kyiv under siege during the early months of the current invasion and it's said to bee melodic and heavy. I don't know if the lyrics will be about the war though. Tati has said its too raw to talk about.
