As a guitarist it might be worth checking out Roman's guitar playthroughs on the Jinjer KZbin channel. Because they aren't really a band that does guitar solos and stuff, it's easy to overlook the amount of work he puts in - tapping, sweeps, fast alt picking, all thrown in among the riffs. He's an incredibly precise guitarist and its great to watch. 'A Plus or a Minus' is a good one.

I second this comment. Roman tends to get overlooked a bit because he doesn’t generally play leads, and he doesn’t play stuff that generally jumps out at you as outlandishly amazing the way the others in Jinjer do. Tati on vocals is always gonna grab a ton of attention. Eugene’s tapping stands out. Vlad’s open handed style, use of ghost notes, and overall incredible mastery are notably unique. I didn’t start to really appreciate Roman until i watched the playthrough videos. It’s all about the beautiful classical-level compositions, the super precise yet tasteful picking, the brutal harmonic palette. The shifting time signatures are tricky to follow, yet completely drinkable, to use a beer term. Roman’s playing reminds me in an odd way of Neil Peart-never content to do the same thing twice, always evolving a part, adding a variation each time around, each part executed with extreme precision. To me the true genius of Jinjer is in how well they play together as an ensemble, each complementing the other in perfect accompaniment to the instrument of Tatiana’s voice. Rhythmic variation is just as big a part of it as harmonic variation. This shit is deep bro!

Roman (guitarist) is an exclusive artist of OD guitars. Those things are gorgeous, and sound even better! I think it's the Venus that he's playing in this one. Tatiana has mentioned that Otep was her biggest influence when it came to learning how to scream. There's a great interview with her by Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice where she talks about it in detail.

I am glad to see you react to this one! If you want some more great live stuff from Jinjer try Pit of Consciousness (live in Kiev) Captian Clock (live at resurrection Fest, not the best audio but a amazing performance) Who is gonna be the one or On the Top (live in Kiev). As far as her harsh vocals go, she is self taught (she practiced by yelling at traffic as it passed by) and she really has no idea how she does what she does. As a guitarist you will probably enjoy Romans guitar play through of I Speak Astronomy.Great Reaction and keep the Jinjer coming!

She had a couple of months of clean training when she was 10. It's not like there's a lot of growling trainers in poor coal coal mining towns in Donetsk. The experience described by another singer from Moldova was working with a clean singing instructor trying to figure out what they could about growling. And for all we know there's a dozen would-be Tatianas who didn't make it.

You might want to check out Outlander (live at the Best Metal Band in Ukraine Awards). It was when they played with 2 guitarists plus the Bass guitarist. That other guitarist was the last original member of Jinjer, everyone on the stage of your Perennial reaction video is added since 2008-12ish with the drummer being the last new addition in 2015. The band sounds excellent live, so there will be no shortage of live videos for you. Roman doesn't get near the credit he should, especially when you consider prior to their most recent album, he composed most if not all the music with Tatiana writing the lyrics after the music was completed. Obviously there would be minor alterations to accommodate or to make a better fit once her vocals were done, but in essence the music was completed with her vocals. There are lots of playthroughs focusing on the different band members, so you will enjoy those as well.

Hey, nice reaction/review. I've been a musician since I was a kid and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the years, but I was never into metal with the scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I instantly fell in love with the band because of their interesting, varied and sophisticated songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the incredible vocals of Tatiana, with her ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing voice into some of the best harsh vocals I've heard, female nor male. Believe or not, Tatiana taught herself how to do the harsh vocals, but she has said that she consciously tried to learn a technique that would not damage her voice and she also mentioned that Otep, Guano Apes and Mudvayne were her early influences in regard to the harsh vocals. Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice KZbin channel did a great interview with Tatiana (it's almost an hour and half long) that covers a lot of her history and vocal technique. Some other great Jinjer songs I would recommend checking out are...Wallflower (official video), which has a very cool groove with a "jazz-like" feel in the first half, lyrics that are about Tatiana being an introvert in the very public music industry and the video is almost like a mini-movie; Judgement and Punishment (Tatiana's "live one take vocal performance" video); Teacher, Teacher (official video); Who Is Gonna Be The One (Napalm Records official live video), which is a heavier song with mainly harsh vocals, but it has a super cool rock riff groove and Tati kicks a$$!

I’ve never heard them list Arch Enemy as an influence. Mudvayne and other Nu metal bands are their influences. Tati’s influence is a wide range of music and singers. Otep and Guano Apes were her harsh vocal influences but she also love Amy Winehouse. She is self-taught and figured out harsh vocals through trial and error.

You're right, even when they had 2 guitarists (until some time in 2015), they didn't have much by way of guitar solos, & they certainly don't have any more of them now that there's just Roman. But Roman's a really talented guitarist, & easily the most under-appreciated member of Jinjer. What makes Roman such an amazing guitarist is the ingenuity he brings to chord choices, voicings, picking, muting, bends & incredible, intricate rhythms to create very unusual, impactful riffs. Since you're a guitarist with a preference for live performances & an interest in drums & stage presentation, I'd suggest that you consider doing multiple features. Here's a recommendation. Song: Captain Clock (from King of Everything, 2016): 1. Official Lyric Video. I don't know if you're interested in lyrics (Jinjer's are generally excellent), but the main reason for this recommendation is so that you can hear the studio vocals, so that you can appreciate how much *better* the vocals sound live. 2. Guitar Playthrough. You *must* see Roman's incredible guitar work in action. Unfortunately, the recording quality of the live video (below) is especially bad for guitar. 3. Live at Ressurrectionfest 2018. Tatiana is *on fire* in this live performance, & it's more than worth suffering through the muddy guitar sound just to experience her at her best. There's also an excellent drum playthrough one by the drummer, Dmitriy Kim, who played on this album just before Vlad joined the band. He isn't as subtle a drummer as Vlad, but super talented nevertheless.

As mentioned in another comment, Tatiana has said she was inspired by vocalists Otep Shamaya and Randy Blythe. She had a clear goal, she wanted to learn and didn't want to sound like a girl trying to growl. Nobody "taught" her, she somehow managed to teach herself. She cannot even explain how she does it and has lost the "feel" for it a few times, forcing her to re-learn. Somehow people manage to learn even if nobody is around to teach them. The phrase that comes to my mind is "Necessity is the mother of invention".

The original singer Maks, was only in the band for a little time. He left Ukraine for the U.S., so Tati was brought on as a fill and has stayed on ever since. It's kinda rare these days, but most members who were formerly or are currently in the band are still tight. Maks married their merch girl Jane and tours with them; their previous drummer Dmitry Kim mixes their live vidoes and helps in the studio; founding member and second guitarist Dmitriy Oksen was in their OMV for Disclosure and has a clothing company with their tour sound guy Sasha.

As someone else has already mentioned, Roman plays OD guitars. I would like to find out what his pickups are, as they are much more responsible for the sound that the instrument woods and shape (eh, bridge-mass has a role as well) The interesting this is, Roman HAS a signature pickup from MSP in Brazil . You can clearly see them in an OD in the Vortex video. BUT, Omer (OD) doesn't offer them as an option on his website... so I guess when I finally splurge and get an OD, I'll have to do the swap out myself. I really, really enjoy the fact that Roman is using those pickups in such a clean sound, they ring out like an angry piano in the mid-range. The EQ on his sound is real interesting, to me, and I don't *think* he is running a heavy compressor which would ruin the clarity and dynamics of what he's doing. FOH may be running a bit of comp, just to bring up the quieter passages a bit, but that is post amp/amp-sim (whatever he's using is allowing the pre-amp dynamics to treat the played notes as ultra-clean in quiet passages). Huh, I gotta go look up a rig-rundown on their live setup... I may be totally off-base, but I am really intrigued about Roman's sound. Tati = no training... truly an amazing example of intuition leading one in the right way (when some notable others have done it wrong and suffered the consequences). I guess it's like the old saying : put a million homo sapiens in front of typewriters and one will turn out to be Shakespeare. Tati has done a number of video interviews where she talks about her self-taught journey into harsh vocals. Thank goodness she DOES do it right, and does not suffer any vocal problems !! The world would be a much less interesting place without her contributions to it's soundscape.

Check out Judgement and Punishment - One Take Vocals. It's just Tatiana singing over a backing track, but it's her straight vocals with no processing or effects. Just to get a perfect sample of her voice, plus it's a great song. And she looks amazing. Also their video for Teacher Teacher is great. There's a live version from Melbourne that is amazing, but the crowd completely ruins it with their off time clapping, unfortunately. Who is Gonna Be The One live is a classic though.

Fans usually don't point this out but you're right, Tatiana did indeed had some vocal training in her youth. The harsh vocals / growling are the technique that she's actually self-taught, but saying the same for her regular singing is incorrect.

I cannot see you being unimpressed with their gorgeous thru-composed (coz #WhoNeedsChoruses, that's why) single "Vortex" - their composition is top-tier *tasty* imho. ;) Since they went to the single guitarist line-up years ago, there's not much in the way of soloing to be had.... but everything they *do* do is super classy, especially after Vlad here joined on drums. Not many drummers are classically trained pianists to trade!... he switched from (self-taught) guitar to (self-taught) drums in his previous band before joining Jinjer. His compositional skills really shine thru on the most recent (& excellent) "Wallflowers" album (he wrote ~80% of the music in there). #AnnoyinglyTalented LOL :)

I been around for a long time as well! There is such a thing as real talent. If you haven't seen it , it experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist! Why would she possibly lie about that? Probably, wouldn't believe this either, but she has improvised most of their songs in front of the mic 8n the studio. Most all in one take. Check out any interviews with their producer Max Morgan. She hasn't spent more then 2 weeks in studio in any album. They as a whole haven't spent more then a little over a month in any album. As far as , the wikipedia page, why would it matter if she was original singer or not? She was in the band , as was Roman, with in an year if it starting.Eugene with in 2. So now 14 years ago. First drummer quit. 2nd drummer fell out of window and broke his back, around the same time the original 2nd guitarist quit to go act. The 3rd drummer was just to fill the tour gap for them, he did not like to tour! Then they could Vlad. Vlad has now been there longer then all other drummers combined. Pretty safe to say that's their band. Arch Enemy was not an influence on them. No part of them is anything like them. I know your trying to sell something, but 5his is my take on your video. You fain research on them ( Tati isn't the 1st singer)as if invested. But didn't catch all i stated before. You made a lazy comparison to another FEMALE metal singer( Theres no comparison between the 2) Then you cal her a liar, because you've been around a long time, so you know better! Inform me, how many years have you been touring the world, how studio albums have you made. How do you do your own multi part harmonies when you record vocals? Long winded from me? For sure? Am i being a snarky asshole? Fair enough! But hey , I'ts just my opinion.

The sound quality of the first live video you reacted to is not representative of the quality of Jinjer’s live sound, that’s why everyone griped the first time lol. And, crucially, the guitar is out of tune. That live Pisces video is a hard one for me to watch, and definitely not the first one to react to. Jinjer is odd in that they’re even better Live than on record, but live the instruments blend together more, and Tatiana is so dominant as a performer that it’s harder to concentrate on individual parts. To really appreciate the beauty of the guitar parts, studio albums and especially playthrough videos are more revealing.
