Welcome back to the channel, Jeff. Good to see you. They are from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting started in 2014. Her name is Tatiana , she is mostly self taught and yes that is all her. Her astrological sign is Pieces, the symbol being 2 fish swimming in opposite directions. She doesn't use the vocal chords for the harsh, she uses the false vocal folds. This live session was done to showcase Vlad on drums, as he had joined not long before this. But it went viral because of her vocals. Vlad is classically trained on piano, and self taught on drums. He, Roman (guitar), and Eugene (bass) write the music , and Tati writes most of the lyrics. Eugene does a lot of tapping on the bass, too. Roman plays OD guitars, it's a 6 string. The guys were stuck in Kiev when the current fighting started, but were allowed to leave last summer , to tour and be ambassadors for Ukraine. They are considered metalcore, but will use other genres, including jazz and Reggae, within the same song. She CAN do it live too, see Perennial live at Wacken 2019 for a good example of that. Others to try, Teacher Teacher, Judgement(andPunishment), Home Back( about the fighting in their homeland in 2014), Vortex, and I Speak Astronomy.

Pisces swimming through the river All their life against the stream Searching for a hook to catch on and see their sun beam Then suffocate in painful tortures On cutting tables of callous men Under a knife of handsome butchers Emeralds are ripped away She's a poet, writing in a second or third language, as the band is from Ukraine. You should check out Perennial - Live at Wacken to see them live, and their video for Retrospection, written for their families who they don't see often due to their touring life, and the nine years long war in eastern Ukraine.

Great to see Wolf back. They are a great band, I saw them live a few weeks back and it was a superb gig. Tatiana is a remarkable front woman and singer. She taught herself to use that false-fold technique and she is one of the best at doing it.

@@SueSueandthewolfman In Swansea, South Wales, supporting Bullet for My Valentine. I went for Jinjer, stayed for BFMV, who were admittedly very good, but I wanted to see Jinjer doing their thing live. They are, as you can tell, en excellent band: tight but adventurous, good songs, obviously a lot of pro-Ukrainian stuff (a light show emphasising the yellow and blue of the Ukraine flag). I was wearing my Jinjer ‘fund-raising’ t-shirt - money from sales going to good causes for Ukrainians affected by by the Russian invasion (which I guess is all of them). Hopefully, I’ll get to see them headline one day, and not just play a 40-minute support slot.

Tatiana uses a combination of false fold and fry. She can switch and combine without causing damage. She has multiple levels of what you call screams, but they are growls. The rest of the band is stupid amazing. The drummer is a classically trained pianist. His Rachmaninov is on point.

Welcome to the greatness that is Jinjer. 🤘Y'all ain't heard or seen nothin' yet. Buckel up! BTW, Pisces is the correct spelling. 😉 I've seen them live a couple of times so far. Among the best live bands I've ever witnessed. I gave Tatiana a Cookie Monster shirt when I met them. I'm a 50 + year old musician and I discovered Jinjer in '18. They are my favorite band from this century. There are many surprises with twists and turns with this band.

This four piece unit is a little miracle. Jinjer is not just a one day fly. This live recording has probably been played more than 70 million times.Their catalogue is huge and filled with great songs. This band is now one of the frontrunners in metal and beyond. The most natural follow up reaction is to 'Perennial live at Wacken' (You are familiair with Wacken I guess;-). Before a big audience or in a small venue they are simply world class. The vocalist is probably one of the best growlers there is, female or male. My favorite live gig on the tube is 'Who is gonna be the one' not the recent one but the older version. It's a blistering performance with Tatiana in super shape. The song also has a surprising twist at the end. Succes and have lots of fun.

Somehow I thought you guys had already been down the Jinjer rabbit hole. Anyway welcome to the wonderful world of Jinjer and our metal goddess Tatiana 🤘🏻 She sings like an angel and growls like a demon straight from Hell. You won’t be sorry for going down this rabbit hole. Every member of the band is a master of their craft and Tati is I believe the best growler out there, male or female. You have barely scratched the surface of this group. Just pick any of the suggestions already in the comments. They are all fantastic. Eugene the bassist is for me in a tie with Misa from Band-Maid for my favorite bassist. Enjoy!😎🤘🏻🤘🏻 More Jinjer, please and thank you! 😎🤘🏻

Tatiana has been doing this vocal technique for 15 years at this point. It doesn't actually use the vocal chords. It uses the false vocal folds which extend over your real vocal folds when you swallow. Singers who do this technique correctly learn to control those involuntary muscles. That combined with the soft pallet and how they form their mouth is how they get the low growls. Everyone who does the technique sounds different because it is biology. The band is from Eastern Ukraine. I'm not sure about all their parents but I believe at least Tatiana's mother still lives in Gorlivka which is very close to the current front lines in Ukraine. They have some excellent videos out there. You might try "Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air" and the video for "I Speak Astronomy" which is a song off the same album as Picses.

Jinjer has put real in hard work for the better part of a decade. They made the dedecision to make playing music their full time job and went on a full time self promoted tours. For years they played every gig that they could get oft🎉playing well over 200 shows a year just to scrap by. That said they slay live and check out Tatiana's lyrics she wouldn't admit it but she does write poetry.

Your response after the song, "Holy crap"!, pretty much sums up the reaction of most people when they first hear Jinjer! 😆 You may have just entered the deep rabbit hole of great Jinjer songs. I've been a musician since I was kid and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the years, but I was never into metal with the scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I loved the band the first time I heard them due to their interesting and sophisticated songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the incredible vocals of their "metal goddess", Tatiana, with her amazing ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing voice to the best harsh vocals I've heard, female or male. Some other Jinjer songs I'd recommend checking out are...Perennial (live from Wacken 2019 video), Judgement and Punishment (Tatiana's live one take vocal performance video), Wallflower (official video), Teacher, Teacher (official video) and Home Back (official video).

Jinjer is from Ukraine and every member is an exceptional musician. They are Roman on guitar, Vlad on drums, Eugene on bass, and Tatiana on vocals. Tati uses her false chords to make that growl, and if done properly, it doesn't harm the voice. They have been one of the hardest working bands over the last decade. They were basically on tour for years after they fled the region they come from because of the Russian invasion

Tatiana Shmailyuk, is a big believer in astrology. She said "I know it doesn't rule your life, but in some ways, it can determine your past," As a Pisces,Tati struggles with the complicated nature of her sign, which is symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions. She wrote this track to show solidarity with her astrological family. "It's a little anthem to all those Pisces out there, because it's really hard for them to survive in this world, because they combine all the 12 signs of the zodiac in themselves. You can call it split personalities. So, we are 12 personalities inside. It's a lot of inner conflicts all the time."

I've been a musician myself for over 40 years and I've been interested in music in different genres for even longer, but when I heard this band for the first time I immediately thought it was something very special and not just because of Tati the singer, I'm talking about the whole band. They are remarkable musicians and people in so many ways that I feel like a teenage fan towards the band. Thanx for your reaction and lovely greetings from germany

How I'm told is that if you can switch fast between growls and cleans you are most likely doing it right and not damaging anything. You can hear it here, when she goes to clean singing, and that high belt, there is no unintentional roughness in the voice. One other songs she does even faster switches, also live. That's a testament to her skills.

Tatiana mostly does "growls" rather than the "screams" so many others tend to do, and she uses "false cords" or "false vocal folds," that she taught herself to do when she was younger and has been doing it for 10-15 years now. Tati, Vlad (drums), Eugene (bass), and Roman (guitar) are spectacular, particularly LIVE. Treat yourself to "Perennial Live at Wacken 2019). Appreciate your reaction more than most others! A lot of other reactions pause and go because they’re more vain about the sound of their own voice and opinion, and then they just end up riding the trendy shock and awe factor wave of Co-Fi ratings. Love that you listened first and analyzed after. True reaction approved! As for the question: her voice is an art form many find or train to achieve by using the false vocal cord openings so as to not wreck the cords themselves- which could potentially leave someone hoarse or worse. In an interview, she was laughing while saying she would practice into a pillow, not wanting to disturb others. Great reaction and many prayers your way!

Harsh vocals have 2 bases that can be extended upon: false cord and fry. There are a lot of techniques involving mouth shape and tongue placement that can wildly change the tone, color and intensity of the sounds you produce. Breath support is key in doing any and all of it safely. Also, never say "screamo" to a metal head 🤣
