"Metalheads... Make room at the table." I love it when new people open their minds to what "metal" music is, because it's not what everyone thinks - it's diverse, amazing talent in every corner you check. It's not one single sound, it's a wide range of heavy, emotional, raw, gutteral, melodic, harmonic, and all around powerful sound that you get lost in quickly. Welcome to the table. 🤘
@2007bmpgti4 жыл бұрын
It's definitely the most diverse genre of music, right? Stoner, Doom, Sludge, Power, Thrash, Drone, Nu, Post-, Black, Death, all the -cores, etc. Like, Converge is so different from King Diamond, but both are under the greater Metal-umbrella.
@mzluna3135 жыл бұрын
I was never into the growling until I heard Jinjer and studied how they produce that sound! It's an extremely advanced form of breath/air control. The sound is produced by the diaphragm and not at all by her vocal cords, that's why the transition back to her singing voice is flawless and doesn't sound like she was screaming. If this technique is done wrong, you can permanently damage your vocal cords! Tatiana is a master at her craft!
@danielstucky37945 жыл бұрын
She doesn't do any warm up's before they play either. She's said that in interviews. It's crazy.
@mzluna3135 жыл бұрын
@@danielstucky3794 Seriously? She's even more badass than I thought!
@jayhegener30285 жыл бұрын
If you believe the stories, she's almost entirely self taught! Drinks, smokes, and never warms up. And yet, one of the best in the genre. She's a freak of nature! I was never into growling either. Now, I tolerate it from other singers. Love it from Tati. Go figure.
@draganakuzmanovic9115 жыл бұрын
Actually, she said that she doesn't warm up, because she is always singing something, throughout the day. That and rehearsals before the gig are enough for her.
@werewolf20030025 жыл бұрын
Metal vocalist that uses this technique here. You're mostly correct! Breath control is extremely important in this technique, but the diaphragm itself isn't what makes the sound, its what are called "false cords" in the larynx, just above the actual vocal cords. So you are again correct that the vocal cords aren't making the sound, it's the false cords instead! Careful placement of the larynx in the throat is also important here in order to help the false chords make sound in a non-harmful way. Hope this clarifies some things!

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of comments from "old" folks in the Jinjer videos, saying exactly the same thing you said about the screaming/growling. There is definitely something very special about how Tatiana sounds that "grabs" the ears of more experienced listeners. Btw, I'm 53, I'm a multi-instrumentalist, I've been listening to music for the best part of 40 years, since the early 70's Rock, to Punk, New Wave, Metal, Industrial, you name it, and I also never cared much for male or female screaming/growling until I discovered 3 bands: Gojira, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Jinjer. But they're the only three, I still couldn't care less about the rest. : )

"It's like she's battling with herself.." That is literally what the song is about the duality of her nature and the struggle within herself to determine who she is. Sit in front of the fish tank during the winter and not even let your consciousness be fish and realize there is only “one” and it is everywhere. I saw them a few weeks back at Brick By Brick in San Diego, and if anything they are better live. Tatiana is a consummate performer and her power on stage is mesmerizing. If you are open to more, I'd recommend Who Is Gonna Be The One which is a concert video, but read the lyrics as it will help see how she uses her growls to drive a message home - it is a banging protest song. And Tati still has some tricks you haven't seen. };D> Your comment about two people is exactly the theme of the song. The sign Pisces has two fish, representing two extremes of Tatiana's personality (she's a Pisces) - her depression and longing for connection in the clean parts; her pain, anger and self-destructive urges in the growling parts. Most of their songs are about environmental, political, or social issues where Tatiana uses her growls to express anger over all the screwed up stuff in the world. She was educated as a teacher of Russian and English and writes superb lyrics despite English being her second language. IMO, your comment about pissing her off dovetails with another of their songs called I Speak Astronomy which Tati wrote to reach out to the universe to find someone she was mentally and spiritually compatible with. In that context, I take the growls to be a warning that as wonderful a person as she is, she isn't entirely sugar and spice and everything nice haha. Also there are some lines in this one "don't rely on me and I won't deceive" and "the beginning or the end you can't tell, when I wave my fin and shake my tail" (which makes me think of snorkeling in a river with fish and if you reach out to one they shake their tail and disappears in a flash). Don't worry about her throat she's been doing it for a decade and a half, and with a brutal concert schedule for a lot of that time - 130 shows last year, scheduled for at least 150 this year, and someone said 160. Now worrying about them burning out, that's another matter. :( Since being forced to leave their homes to continue their music careers by the war in eastern Ukraine, they have been fanatically fighting for success to give that sacrifice meaning.

Loved your facial reactions in the outro of the song! That’s my favorite part, top musicianship from everyone in the band but her vocals were especially fantastic there

Teacher Teacher is probably their best track. It crosses over genres. The path to understanding these vocals: Opeth, Gojira, Meshuggah, Devin Townsend. P.S. If you like being completely surprised, *Devin Townsend - Kingdom (the EMG-TV version)* should do the trick :)

Brother.... I'm very happy you seen this. Tatiana is extremely talented!!!! I'm a heavy metal guitar player / musician. The amount of skill and talent for her to do what she does is insane! Absolutely loved your reaction. 👊👊👊👊

Tati is one of the best metal vocalists around... Not as versatile as Floor Jansen of Nightwish, but a beast! I speak astronomy next. I love it's video.
