So, time to learn Stevie a thing - this doesn't damage her voice at all. In fact, this is pretty natural to someone who has trained their voice with false folds to be able to do something like this. We've been waiting for a long time for you to pop your metal cherry, so I have a couple suggestions - if you don't fuck with this, don't let it spoil you for other metal, because this is stupendously unique. Second, the duality is kind of the point of the song, dichotomy between soft and hard and how that relates to Pisces and all that. Look up the lyrics and do some research on it, and it'll become clear. Finally, welcome. I may just join patreon to start sending our man down the Tool rabbit hole.

“I prefer the sweet Jinjer.” The Jinjer Army will be coming to respectfully disagree, I’m guessing. Tatiana is a powerhouse of a vocalist. But harsh vocals aren’t for everyone. If a vocalist who growls has good technique, they’re not hurting themselves. That’s why she can easily flip back and forth between the two. Plus, they tour almost nonstop and she sounds just as great live (and is a total shy sweetheart to meet). Go for “Teacher, Teacher” next, maybe?
@jayhegener30284 жыл бұрын
For me, it's the contrast that is so riveting. And the fact that she's so good at both. I think most songs take advantage of that and have a good mix. I will say, she is one of the few growlers that I don't mind and can listen to nonstop.

The reason why her growl seemed fake to you: You instinctively expect that someone making this sort of sound will be in a lot of strain and it will show in their face and neck, veins and tendons popping up and all that, BUT she uses actual good singing technique, so her face and neck are relaxed. It looks off, because many metal singers _don't_ have good technique, they just rend their vocal chords and it shows.

Perfect that you said you'd dive down the rabbit hole at the end of this, because you're about to find out that you're a piece steel being pulled by an electromagnet. As you hear new tracks from them, you'll find out that this band's diversity makes them collectively just as good as she is. Pisces typically gets introduced so that we can let her kick you in the teeth, but it is neither the band's or her best song by about 75%. Perennial live at Wacken is almost always the perfect follow up because it shows proof of her skills, but also shows her off in terms of personality and stage presence. You'll find her to be 3 parts angel, demon and diva along the way. She's also a different brand of gorgeous in each song. SUBBING

Man everyone loves trolling people with this track. It's like a right of passage for reactors. For the record, this is not a great track to start your rock journey to. Tatiana is insanely talented but this type of metal is not a way to introduce people to rock. For Hip Hop fans making a transition to rock music I always recommend Rage Against The Machine. Killing In The Name is the quintesential Rage track but there's other great ones too Bulls On Parade, Down Rodeo, Guerrila Radio. Zach is a lyricist, the Hip Hop influence is deep and dude can spit. Plus Tom Morello's heavily funk inspired guitar makes an easy transition for Hip Hop fans. Give them a try.

Fun reaction - subbed. Tatiana is the real deal and you are quite right that the musicianship of the whole band is superb. There are a lot of different genres of heavy metal, and not all use growls. I never enjoyed growls until I found Jinjer. It isn't done with the vocal cords. If you check out Jinjer Pisces covers you can see various youtubers doing their versions with a variety of skill levels. Tbh, one of the reasons I liked it is cuz it reminds me of women I've dated who can make that kind of pivot in real life - and I'm not talking about singing hehe. I'm impressed by the radical honesty of making a song about that dynamic. Btw, Tati has been doing growls at least 15 years and both her growls and cleans get stronger every year, her voice is doing fine. I'd suggest Perennial live at Wacken next to see what they can do on stage with a song that's not a lot harder than this and really shows off her clean singing skills as well as her growls, then Teacher Teacher official for one of their most popular songs. Cheers!
@Ivan-ow5xc4 жыл бұрын
This song is about the zodiac sign Pisces and its bipolar nature: a dark and a bright side. That's why it bounces between the "angelic and devil shit". The singer herself, Tatiana, is a Pisces. Great reaction as always, you've introduced me to a long variety of rap artists. It's nice to see this the other way around, like I'm showing you a metal artist I like.

As a fan of Hip-Hop you know you can sometimes catch bars that may be too quick for others who don't really listen to it as much as you do? That's how it is with growl vocals for metal heads. With time you get to understand and catch the words they are saying and it just becomes second nature.
@tackle474 жыл бұрын
You just saw the best band in the world. The whole band is incredibly tainted and super tight live. Tatiana of course is in the god tier of vocalist in any genre right now. She also has a powerful stage presence. As for her voice she is not wrecking it as she is not using her vocal cords for the growls. Not all metal has growling though Jinjer is almost always extreme vocals somewhere in their songs. You need to check them out live, suggest Perinneal Live Wacken 2019 or Who is Gonna Be the One Live official. Great reaction and ready to see more of your journey.

Great reaction, Stevie! Yeah, at first listen, if a person isn't used to this type of music, it is kind of a shock, but that's one of the things about the lead singer, Tatiana, and Jinjer, that make this band one of the most interesting and coolest ones around, IMHO! All of the musicians are very talented, also. I highly recommend that whenever you might do future reaction videos to Jinjer songs, it's a good thing to have lyrics ahead of time, and then you will be able to follow along much easier. It's not at all a bad thing, when it comes to their songs, and will probably help out a lot. She is extremely talented and very dynamic, for sure! I think other Jinjer songs you might like to check out are Who Is Gonna Be the One, I Speak Astronomy (a full-blown science fiction video along with the music), Teacher, Teacher Cloud Factory and Just Another. I'm 58 years old, and am a big fan of Jinjer's, though up until a few months ago, the group was never on my radar. Have a good one!

Yeah bro, she really does sound like that. I've seen them live and this is absolutely indicative of her real sound. As a metal vocalist myself, I can vouch for her technique. In terms of consistency and breath control, she is at the top of her game and puts many male growlers and screamers to shame. One thing to pay attention to though, purely for educational purposes: This is a live session video, so she's actually singing, though there is some reverb and doubling added in post. Notice how loose and relaxed her body is. Notice her neck and you can tell she's not straining at all. Hell, look at how close she is to the microphone when growling versus when she's doing the clean vocals. That fact alone reveals it's not actually very loud. Here's the thing: she's not actually screaming. It's a vocal technique, like what voice actors do. Harsh metal vocals are basically a combination of voice acting techniques and operatic posture and breath control. It's all about anatomy- this technique, which is called 'False Chord', doesn't actually utilize the vocal chords at all when done correctly, and as such it doesn't damage them. Once you can control your anatomy in your throat enough, you can use the soft palate, soft tissues, and vestigial chords to vibrate and resonate instead of your actual vocal chords. There are other techniques, such as 'Fry' or 'Slam' which DO use the vocal chords, but they maintain compression such that the vocal chords don't actually make contact- again, using the soft palate to get the reverberation for the loud gritty sound. Those techniques are more similar to the throat singing you hear Aborigines, Mongols, or Tibetan Monks doing, but they all have one thing in common: they focus on protecting the vocal chords while SOUNDING like you're abusing the vocal chords. In short, metal vocals, done right, is PRETEND screaming, not actual screaming. There are a lot of inexperienced vocalists don't understand that distinction and end up blowing out their vocal chords, resulting in short careers. But the ones who educate themselves and train in the proper techniques, like Tatiana here, have careers that often span decades.
