Ooh, good insight on Maomao as Jinshi’s “toy” related to the whole theme of women as possessions and assets. Man, when Jinshi asked the question he’d been holding in, throughout an episode full of disguises and role-reversal date fun and Maomao being a dress-up doll for the third or fourth time and Basen’s angry NOMNOMNOMming and that cute grin with the skewers… the tone just suddenly did a 180. Dropped like a rock. It’s some very deft blending - the way this series pulls off all the funny and cute bits while never losing sight of the fact that there are some SERIOUSLY dark things in this setting, and in people’s backstories.

Yeah, from the silly dress up scenes at the start to the cute date like walks through the streets. They really did great with the atmosphere of this show, especially when it goes from light to dark on a dime sometimes!

I don't think Gaushun sees Maomao as a toy, just that the way Jinshi is acting reminds him of how he was with a favorite toy when he was younger. He would fixate onto that toy and throw a tantrum if it was gone. Gaoshun and Suirin were talking about how he found a toy for Jinshi to settle down with, so I think it's more that they see Maomao as a potential wife/mistress for him, it's just that the way Jinshi is fixated on Maomao is how he was with his favorite toys. The only downside seems to be that Jinshi might neglect his duties to spend time with Maomao.

I think "toy" is a replacement for "infatuation" in said context. Just a child's toy vs. more, grownup's.

Some of my fav parts are when Maomao envisions that both men and women couldn't resist him lol. (Pretty true tbh)

As far as I am concerned the bit of Maomao mentally wishing Jinshi a good time in the pleasure district really showed he was growing on her. Just like she was growing on him.

if Jinshi just wanted Maomao as a toy, he would not have cared about her opinion and that she might be upset with him if he kept her in the inner court instead of firing her. He really thought about her and her feelings there - even though he misunderstood, his intention was very good there.

So cute to see Jinshi let Maomao do his makeup and subsequently be subjected to her making him dress up with her idea of a princess lol. For all 2 audience members to see !! Just love that he trusts her enough to do such a thing with him. They are great together. Excited to see the Lakan mini arc and your feelings throughout. Should be super fun. You just finished Frieren and now we have my fav show

Maomao knows Jinshi and Gaoshun are not Eunuchs since the Garden Party but is in denial. Her “let’s go with this” attitude as self defense continues to prevail.

Yeah...by modern standards, this anime has a lot of issues. But it is not set in modern times. It is historically accurate, which I appreciate. Applying modern standards to a historical drama means we can't learn much from it. Examining our mistakes and failures are a great tool for learning and I feel like I'm learning something when I watch this anime, not to mention laughing and being engaged.

I watched the whole season and thought that Jinshi had bought Maomao out from the Verdigris House at first. But then asking about the value of a cortesean and how to lower it really threw me off. Is Maomao still "owned" by the Verdigris House? That's what everything seems to imply and Maomao is just being hired out by Jinshi. Without spoiling can someone confirm if I'm right about this?

Anime spoilers: In one of the later episodes (the one where she plays a game with lakan) she does mention that she's under an employment contract with jinshi

Maomao’s current employment situation isn’t related to Jinshi’s question. He did buy out the debt she owed to Verdigris, I believe, which is why she works for him now instead of the madam. She’s not just on loan.

@@IZEASGT okay. I think I get it. Jinshi bought out the debt. So now Maomao "owes" him money. Therefore she works for Jinshi. Now this raises another question... Did Lakan think Jinshi bought Maomao as a cortesean or for those purpose? Seems like that thinking is why he didn't seem particularly happy about it. Though he did have the wrong idea. And even so I doubt he likes the idea of his daughter being at the whims of man because of debt

If Gaoshun and Jinshi see her as a toy or not is besides the point. Jinshi is way too high up to get attached to anything. The emperor doesn't love any of his consorts. He can't allow himself to do that, they're all very high connected politically... what if he needs to get rid of their relatives? It might cloud his judgement. Jinshi is his heir, he needs to behave the same and Gaoshun knows this. He basically raised Jinshi and he's already too old to behave like a child.
