It's a part of the East Asian culture. They used to be really poor back in the day and people would ask each other if had eaten/ had something to eat. If they did, it meant they were doing well. So basically it's equal to: "How's it going".

Exactly. When you break a 'hello' sentence down it literally means 'hi, how are you - have you eaten?'' But it is not being nosey, this is the way the polite greeting sentence has been for years and the person doesn't literally want to know what you've eaten - it's a thing called manners which seems to be disappearing around the world today.

'밥 먹었어? / Have you eaten rice/a meal?' in today's vernacular in South Korea basically means 'How are you?' It shouldn't necessarily be taken 100% literally every time. As I understand it, Korea was a much poorer country in the past compared to now and eating to the point of being full wasn't always a given. So, if you ate a good meal, that meant you had a good day. The sentiment applies today despite our living conditions being drastically different.

Also it's about 밥심! Like full-stomach power meaning, people in Korea think that when you have an empty stomach you don't have the energy to go on with the day. And it's like caring and also saying hi too.

This sort of sentiment isn’t limited to the Korean language. I guess it’s all about exposure and the culture you are exposed to as well. Also, it could be a translation issue at times - some phrases in Korean seem a bit too direct to me for a British English speaker. However, I am also Nigerian so I understand how direct one is sometimes a cultural thing.

🖤 Unfortunately this behavior is not only subject to South Korean men. The average guy has little to no understanding of how attraction works and typically comes off very needy, weak and insecure which causes them to chase and pursue their romantic interests to the point where they either get ignored, friendzoned or ghosted completely. The common complaints every single girl shared in the video mentioned were that the guys are too clingy, rushing things before she’s ready, too attentive and coming off as horny jerks only interested in sex. The right approach to dating is that guys should focus on taking a genuine interest getting to know her and what she’s all about. When going on dates their primary objective is to make her laugh, have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Fellas, our (sensible) lady friends don’t want a “nice guy” or a “badboy jerk”, they want a gentleman who they can trust, respect and admire so let’s do better and lead by example! 🖤

@@spook6394 The problem is that men and women have been propagandized by societal conditioning through tv, movies, music and various other forms of media into believing a false dysfunctional reality of how attraction works between sexes. Men are brainwashed to think that they need to chase more and that dating is some kind of mad dash to the finish line where they have to rush into locking a woman down into a commitment otherwise someone else might come along and take her away from them. Women on the other hand are taught to act more stoic and be in their masculine, essentially behaving in ways that are the complete opposite of their normal feminine nature. Ultimately the sexual polarities end up flipping in the wrong direction resulting in men acting more like women and women acting more like men. When people act and behave in ways outside of their core essence (masculinitity which is typical in most men and femininity which is typical in most women) it feels unnatural and causes a loss of attraction.

Jealousy is romanticized in k-dramas; it's like when you are jealous, *that's* when you know it's love. But for most of us, jealousy is something you have to deal with yourself. I of course want to be able to meet with friends without my date (now husband) gets angry. Likewise, I will just have to deal with my own feelings of insecurity when he meets with pretty girls who are his friends. (He used to have one friend in particular, that he met a lot. And they *were* just friends, but I just had to hold my breath and say that to myself). Only if the other one is actually unfaithful or acts so strange that it would make anyone uncomfortable (lying about where they are, for example, coming home from the city after having slept elsewhere, hiding whom they speak to on the phone) will it be okay to say that you want to change some things. because they are making you uncomfortable. While in k-dramas it's like "Don't ever be alone with other men" and "That looks good on you, - from now on, only wear it when you are alone with me," and "You smiled while you talked to him!"
@cxrindgo6 ай бұрын
such a great observation!! i think jealousy is also romanticized in YA romance films like Twilight and things like that, but outside of that genre and in more modern films especially, it’s considered to be a lot more of a personal issue that one has to grow as a person and deal with rather than something to aspire to/proof of love. probably some of that comes from recognizing that intense jealousy can lead to toxic relationships such as ones that forbid their partner from certain friendships and such then again, i see influencers asking their partners what they would do in [x] situation where if it’s an interaction with someone they could be romantically interested in they can’t even do things like hold doors or recognize they’re pretty/handsome, etc. if they allow that then they “fail the test.” i truly hope that’s mostly a social media thing, though (and it’s played for jokes, so idk how serious they are about it)

Have you eaten is basically a Korean way of saying are you doing well and taking care of yourself? It is showing that you care about someone's health and well being. I remember meeting a Korean guy years ago and we had a college class together and we only saw each other in class and I was polite and always said hello. He had a bit of a language barrier but was intelligible. He asked me to be his girlfriend without ever having chatted outside class or ever going out and then he offered me all his furniture and stuff when he left. i live in the US and I've always had guys ask "have you eaten?" its not the norm in the US but its definitely become a standard. I've never had guys not ask. but its seen as more of a nice gesture then a normal question.
@dathunderman49 ай бұрын
I’m Korean-American, and I feel like in the US it’s more of a small talk thing that is actually meant to be taken literally, whereas in Korea it actually means “how are you?” and no one responds to that with an answer of what they actually ate. Ppl in the US say it a lot too, but it’s not typically a stand in for a greeting, just like a topic for small talk. My mom literally asks me “have you eaten?” every time she calls me, never “how have you been?”
@Mariajbh29 ай бұрын
Yes, If they send you a message at a time close to a meal, many ask, even if it is out of curiosity if you have eaten. But I think "how are you?" "how's it going?" or similar questions are more complex and profond and address how the person is feeling internally or psychologically. In my opinion

I don’t see anything wrong ask a person “Have you eaten?”. If the answer is No he could invite you to eat together. Nothing wrong and nothing cultural. This is something that everyone ask. Also they may say, "What happened? “Don't skip mealtime." I've asked this many times. It's a sign that I'm interested in the other person's well-being, nothing bad. If they text or call too much, you have to let them know the appropriate hours to do it. For me it is also a sign that the guy is thinking about you all the time. RED FLAG is definitely asking about sex and also preventing you from going out with your friends from class or work from an early stage of the relationship .
@newzinski694610 ай бұрын
It’s because Korean men will ask “would you like to get ramen/ramyun with me?” Which means sex here. A lot of foreign expat women have heard that phrase at least once in person or texting a Korean guy
@elysiad65099 ай бұрын

@dathunderman49 ай бұрын
@@newzinski6946I don’t think that’s what the girl in the video is implying tho. She said she felt weird because she’s normally used to a “how have you been?” greeting. In the US, asking someone “how have you been?” Is a signal that you care about them. I’m Korean-American, and though I can speak Korean pretty fluently, I don’t understand a lot of these types of cultural differences in sayings. I remember when I was younger, I would get a bit annoyed too, cuz every time my mom would call or see me after having not seen me for a while, she would always ask me “have you eaten?” and never how I have been. In the US, if someone you’re close to never asks how have you been, we might get offended, because it seems like they don’t care enough about our lives to bother checking up on us. But I learned afterwards my mom was asking me that because it’s a stand-in for “how have you been” for Koreans. So I think that’s what she was trying to say, not that she was worried the guy was trying to ask for a hookup, tho I definitely know what you’re talking about.
@newzinski69469 ай бұрын
@@dathunderman4 but I live in Korea currently. No Korean here has asked me or my girl friends “have you eaten?” Unless it was obviously phishing for a date or a way to move the needle to convince a girl to go out with them or hookup. Otherwise, no Korean guy here ever asks that to women or men around. Esp since I’ve been here the last 5 years and never once heard it unless we’re in a group and we obviously haven’t eaten dinner yet. Living here you wouldn’t believe how Korean men behave here towards foreign women. It’s honestly not what you’re thinking or trying to explain. I’ve never seen some 20 year old Korean guy ask that to women unless it was at an angle for meeting women. Koreans here are extremely shy and rarely talk to foreigners. The ones that do 90% of the time are trying to get in their pants and 10% are prob trying to date or maybe be friends
@newzinski69469 ай бұрын
@@dathunderman4 to be specific, “older Koreans, mostly female” have asked that phrase but these were co-workers same with the older men but they tend not to ask as much. And just similar to older grandparents and parents in the U.S. do it because it’s to show they want to know about our well-being etc. HOWEVER, it is NOT commonly used by young Koreans especially male here nowadays. So a lot of the time it’s NOW used with foreign women to direct the conversation to go out or maybe move the needle towards hooking up. Because: 1. Hooking up culture is becoming very normal here (tons of motels everywhere) 2. Koreans now are more modern and don’t care about sex before marriage etc 3. Foreign women are more abundant here 4. Quite a lot of Korean men view “sleeping” with foreign women as a “achievement” to brag to their friends 5. Korean men know that they’re usually desirable with foreigners because BTS and kpop has made Koreans more sexual now and it’s some of the reason why foreign women are here. This isn’t a 100% assessment and experience for EVERY guy but in all my years living here and going out drinking, clubbing, experiences my girl friends have told me about men here and my Korean friends this phrase is pretty outdated amongst young Koreans unless it’s to other Koreans. But the times they use it towards foreign women by men is usually asking for a date or getting in her pants
@katherinejimenezmatos200910 ай бұрын
Some k-men: "are you open minded?" RED FLAG🚩🚩🚩, I repeat RED FLAG🚩🚩🚩 For some reason many of them think this means "are you open to sexual experience(s)?" Which is NOT. Make sure to educate those asking this, especially if you are not looking for hook ups and one night stands. But once again, ladies, PLEASE, Korea ≠ Kdrama, k-men ≠ kdrama oppa.

I hope we all know how to take of ourselves and learned to avoid red flags. If its clearly a red flag, then we shouldn't continue honestly. Yes, sometimes love doesn't work as the way it wants. But i guess wait for the the right person when the time is right. I watch kdrama too, honestly yje reason why I love it so much not because the romance raise up my standards, because it really shows about treating well with each other. The whole point of love basically. Same like any other entertainment. Who doesn't like romance novel when there are such perfect description poems about eternity love also loyalty. Sooo. Too all of us this is something i would like to remind to myself. Life is not a fantasy. Stay single for the rest of your life only until someone compliment to get along well, which to make u feel better and know is better to not be single. Or else it won't be worth it. Red flags especially from guys I'm afraid will come to u more if we just keep continuing and settled for less. I'm saying based on experience as well and I'm from Malaysia. We may thought that we just have to find the right person but at same time we also have to be the right person for someone.Thx Jin for making videos like this which can help to understand and keep the community listen well.

I think every country has a variety of people with individual preferences. That's why it's best to start out as friends and allow a relationship to develop naturally. Men are very visual. But some are looking for a close relationship and others just want to have fun. Women can be the same way, but you have to take the time to learn what each person wants.

What people don't understand, you meet the right person in the right environment, not dating apps, clubs... Also you don't go out on dates just randomly with people you never met before. If you want a person who will respect you, it requires time and effort to find them. Otherwise,don't have high expectations..There are really good men out there, you just have to find them.

Understand this: the culture of "pali-pali (빨리빨리)" - Korean trademark - applies to dating as well. For Koreans, everything is now or never, love at first sight or love at no sight. Within 10 seconds of meeting my wife, I knew she would be it. This is just cultural difference.

There is a reason why Korean men have an image of foreign women as being easy and that’s because some foreign women have given them that impression about all women who are not from that country. Not all women who are from other countries sleep around or like to have one night stands.

Actually, American men do ask if you've eaten depending upon the time they call and after asking how you are. Those ladies just haven't met men who ask about dinner or lunch. Asking if someone has eaten is just a way to ask you out or check on you. Whether anything happens after eating is a different situation.
