@@Nailpol I’d argue killing stalking is better because at the very least the author had no intentions to let the two male leads be together. @@illy2na Except many of the illustrators & authors out right romanticize the problematic elements in their stories, for example take Killing Stalking, the author has stated it’s a psychological horror and that the characters (Sangwoo & Yoonbum) shouldn’t be shipped because it’s psychological horror and their entire relationship is problematic, yet she made chapters like the ‘Christmas special’ in KS which is solely just fan service for those who DO ship them, romanticize & sexualize their relationship and view it as a BL. My main point is many authors of this kind of content are a huge factor on why things like this are sexualized & romanticized in their own stories. As an actual writer, illustrator, translator & psychological horror fan myself who’s also a gay guy this issue is still pretty prevalent in the BL genre and it’s issues are mainly caused by the creators

News flash flash: that's what Dan's job is, Jaekyung's conditions were; wherever he wanted when he wanted it's not about Dan at all. It doesn't matter if Dan enjoys it, it's gonna happen whether Dan feels like it or not, which is what he agreed to get paid. I also want to add that this manhwa qualifies as a non-con, so the consept of "consent" is not mistaken, or done poorly it wasn't intended to be there in the first place. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying, it's their agreement and that's the point of "plot".

From rape, to the violence and jjk being an asshole overall (it's all INTENTIONAL) so to answer your question; yes it is all still the plot, that the author wrote, re-read, drew and re-read once more then published it. It's a real issue that's being normalised in romantic fiction.

Also, one of the things that a lot of animators/manhwa artists do to make you not see a character as a SA victim is depicting them as these blushy, open mouthed, shiny eyed characters during the sex scenes - the features become hentai-ish. This to show the character as someone who is shy, coy, but liking what is happening. The same thing happens on Berserk, during the scene where Casca is raped, she is depicted with a pleasured expression on her face (and later on turns catatonic from the trauma). It's terrible, because although bodily reactions are not controllable, a rape victim isn't happy or feeling good to be there. And doing this makes people not see them as the victims they are, but as someone "in denial".
@nyahlapin3 ай бұрын
I was thinking to make this exact point as I was scrolling the comments - it's the artistic portrayal of it all that REALLY rubs me the wrong way; like why are you trying to make it look like he's enjoying this??? To be fair, when it comes to Berserk, even if Cascas SA was depicted in questionable way, we are still shown severe and devastating consequences of SA. Guts carried out this trauma into adulthood, and the same trauma made it hard for him to make any type of physical contact. Casca was litteraly bleeding in the scene, and her mind was litteraly shut down and rebooted to that of an infant. It was also shown that Casca in her state of broken mind started men. I think no one in story itself tries to argue that Casca enjoyed it.

@@Hoshi-i8z I'll defend parents a little bit on this one. It's so normal to give kids phones these days but parental controls on these devices can be circumvented. If a parent is regularly checking in on all the messages, conversations, group chats and websites, they will be judged as too controlling to these early teenagers or helicopters parents or not giving the kids privacy, not respecting boundaries. Heck, kids handle technology better than adults, so if they want to hide, they will hide. There was a case of kids using a bible app to share porn & sext with strangers. I've written a paper on this topic for my psychological literature class. It's surprising how heteronormativity and misogyny are prevalent even in spaces meant for MLM (men loving men). BL (Boys' Love) media, in particular, often normalizes rape, sexual assault, toxic relationships, and other forms of suffering for the bottom character. The uke (bottom) is portrayed as more feminine, which allows the predominantly female readership to sympathize with him. Meanwhile, the seme (top) is depicted as an excessively masculine manly man. This dynamic demonstrates how queer media is co-opted by heteronormative norms, imposing traditional gender roles on two men. The only logical explanation for why authors frequently make the uke miserable is the application of heteronormativity to queer media. BL is more popular among straight teenage girls than it is among actual gay men like myself. It's quite clear to distinguish between BL content created by and for gay men and that which is produced by and for straight teenage girls.
@Menathekermit3 ай бұрын
this is why I quit bl it never dawned on me just how twisted these character's arcs are putting them through. I've personally never read Jinx but had accidentally started manhwas similar to this before and felt absolutely appalled when the top was forcing the bottom, I completely agree with the fact that its just the female-male stereotype relationship but just slapped onto this "Gay" facade (sorry if it came off as offensive). I think if I were to look at it from a teenage girl's mindset, theyre just indulging in pleasure actions without worrying bout birth control! Until you bring in the digusting things the top does and it started to change my view on how most BLs are written these days. This whole "BL" fandom yes including weirder stuff like the ABO world settings etc is just...I dont even wanna describe it, its just putrid and makes me sick to the stomach that I've ever read any and thought that was fine.
@susanaduarte25893 ай бұрын
I think people forget the history of bl and yaoi. None of those have ever been made by gay men, it was originally made (and it still is) by straight women. The reason why it’s a gay couple instead of a straight one was to exempt the women writing and reading of feeling dirty when expressing their sexuality. The bottom was created to be an avatar of the feminine, in an universe where his feminine beauty was seen as something to envy and be in awe of instead of being ridiculed as a lesser man, while the top was the avatar of the masculine, which represents the men these women get into relationships with or fantasize about. This is why bl and yaoi is so heteronormative and why so many of them depict toxic relationships, it’s a way of coping FOR WOMEN. There are definitely similar forms of media that are catered towards queer people, but bl and yaoi are not it and, in my opinion, shouldn’t be considered queer media, since it isn’t made by queer people, doesn’t cater to queer people and it’s a bad representation of gay men. But of course, consuming these types of dark romances, especially from a young age, without any type of critical thinking about the material or guidance will end up, in the long run, influencing the reader to normalize abuse and toxic relationships. Just, please, don’t call something like bl and yaoi queer media again.

@jjongjjongiefan73243 ай бұрын
there’s a lot of BLs that are actually healthy, though. And also ones that don’t have the “big buff masculine seme x small feminine uke” dynamic. My favs are Our Sunny Days, The Pizza Delivery Man and the Gold Palace, Pink Heart Jam, My Guildmate Next Door, Define The Relationship, Cherry Magic, Dokyuusei/Sotsugyousei, After We Gazed At The Starry Sky, Given, Here U Are, etc these are just the ones I can name off the top of my head. My point is that stereotyping the BL genre into the “toxic masculinity masc top x fem bottom” dismisses some amazing stories that deserve love and recognition without the stigma behind the BL genre.

@namelessbard21243 ай бұрын
@@NovdoriI’ve read the one you mentioned (BJ Alex right?) and I don’t think that kind of redemption is even possible in Jinx. The ml from that story started out really shitty, yes, but he never got past the point of no return like the one from Jinx. Right from the start BJ Alex’ relationship with the mc was consensual. It was in fact the mc who initiated it quite enthusiastically (honestly at times I cringe a little at the way mc inserted himself into ml’s life despite them not having any from of relationship prior and behaves so pushy and clingy just because he was the fan of ml’s broadcasts, but that’s beside the point). And the ml never abused him, it’s more like being extra shitty because he’s annoyed by mc and wanted him gone, and mc could have left him anytime he wanted. And he did too, hence the whole redemption arc of ml winning mc back. With Jinx, it’s straight up r*pe right from the start, the mc is coerced and threatened into not leaving, silenced by ml having so much more power, influence and money than him, the ml abuses him physically and verbally, and even when mc was starting to show some feelings towards ml (probably Stockholm’s Syndrome honestly), he got physically and verbally humiliated for it. No amount of tragic backstory could ever make the ml earn a redemption arc. It’s bad enough that the story is presented and advertised as a “rough” romantic BL instead of a psychological horror that it is, if the story decided to give them a “happy ending” and brought them together at the end, my opinion of the author really will be down the drain forever.

This webtoon would be good if it was to bring light to abusive homosexual relationships because it's portrayed amazingly but instead... just like many others... it's romanticized. I don't understand how people can read this and think "hm, wow, so romantic, i'm rooting for them...." Don is being abused over and over... and over. And the fact that jaekyung remains abusive would've been used as a statement because 90% of the time, people like that don't change and even though they are sent to jail or even publicly called out for it, there's a small chance they'll change. I wish in season 2, the author actually gets sense and puts jaekyung behind bars and Don in therapy and a better living state, because no way in fuck is any other alternative story ending more suitable.

That is exactly the main point the author was trying to point on Jinx. That misogyny is an inevitable reality all girls can experience while growing up as women with abuse.
@queenofbeinghungryaf10253 ай бұрын
There was a great video that explored how bl stories are so entertaining for straight women especially because they can have it as an escapism from misogyny and the risks of being a woman in a heterosexual relationship. It just keeps on happening,just like in Killing Stalking(not a queer romance but it's an example of this issue) where the fans were romanticising their relationship as toxic and obsessive but in a hot enviable way when it was the guy who got abuse but then the fans were triggered when there were chapters that showed female victims who were treated the same by the kidnapper. It's because it is so much easier to not personify the abuse a character goes through if you don't share the same gender as them hence making them less likely to empathize or see how problematic the situation portrayed is. Because women being violated and abused by men is so prevalent in the real world,seeing abuse portrayed in a hetero relationship is not as enjoyable for the same female fans that want to escape the constrains of misogyny and how it affects them in their every day life.

It doesn’t save you from regurgitating the anti-victim mentality in these comics. And it sure doesn’t save you from sexually abusive relationships. What Jinx IS is propaganda, selling the idea of sexual violence being acceptable at the hands of abusers. The fact that the intention of the author is to put him through a rue dimentary hell so he can pay for some shit she didn’t really need to write in the first place makes me so hot.

And if you do a thing TO be hurt in that way, some things by their nature (as in: “the definition includes ‘against one’s will’”) can’t be agreed to!!!! And I think that's the issues though, regardless, he's victimized and everyone subconsciously acknowledges it but disregards that factor due to romanticization of angst and the ideology that a redemption arc is subsequential to a plot when in reality this is often overlooked. It's never depicted in a way that shows progress or genuine development, just "oh he realizes he's actually in love and they have more sex but this time passionately" while constantly overlooking the issue in itself.

I hate it when an author uses physical pleasure as evidence that the main character has feelings for ML or that they enjoy forced act. And then an author turn it into love. It's not only a problem with BL manhwas, but also with straight ones.

Same here.. Can't they just make a cute love story which starts to build on the emotional part and not of the physical part of a relationship!?
@psoltiivan3 ай бұрын
The thing I hate the most is not even the portayed abuse in the manhwa (you can make a good psychological thriller depicting abuse), but the way the author tries to sell you this as a romance story. As you've mentioned, she doesn't think of Dan as a victim, she doesn't consider it to be rap3, she wants them to be in love. When in the end of season 1 Jaekyung got his ass beaten and Dan left (even tho not for the right reasons, but left nonetheless) I was hoping that the story will acknowledge the horrors of this relationship and makes the abuser suffer the consequences. But the way the characters who got fed up with Jaekyung's treatment are portrayed as pricks and morally bad guys, while the dude who condemns them and tries to convince everyone to help Jaekyung is obviously supposed to be the "voice of reason" I highly doubt the author will get the story in a right direction. I fear that Jaekyung will go through some shit, we'll be shown some super sad backstory that will be supposed to excuse his actions, and he'll say "sorry" at most and they'll live happily ever after. I DO NOT CARE how sad of a story he has or what other external factors make him act this way they will never convince me that it can be excused. It's not "just fiction", it's a popular piece of media that makes people comment shit like SA victims are wrong. Also rule of thumb - imagine if the criminal was not conventionally attractive and ask yourself if it still looks okay.

See, that's just weird to me. I'm fine with writing a story exactly like this, but make it what it is. A story about a guy whose life is miserable and a macho attractive dude who takes advantage from him. You can explore dark themes with out romanticizing what they actually are. How fans take it however is a different story. Killing Stalking is a horror/thriller novel, and people still ship it to hell and back, which is fine, do whatever with fictional people, not so fine with RL people, but that story admits what it is. Trying to make drama and dark content as if it's actually healthy is where I draw a line. You can like and enjoy terrible people and terrible fictional characters. Plenty of people like villains, both well written and very flat but sexy ones. I rarely judge by what people create, but it does say something about a writer and possibly the culture they come from (be it national, familial or whatever else) if they write something abusive and don't realize it's abuse. That said, there are plenty of people in real life who are woefully educated on what abuse is and how it doesn't always mean a black eye or even physical assault. So, the world has a lot of catching up to do in this regard. And yes, that is a great rule of thumb because IRL also has issues with this. We excuse a lot of real life people and criminals if they are considered attractive.
@missstranger76973 ай бұрын
@@vinvin7809 As much as Jaekyung is represented as a role model with the pretty privilege for men, what he did to Dan is something which is really unforgiveable and inexcusable. Dan really didn't know him well as a person and Jaekyung didn't know Dan either. They were conveniently 2 random people in a toxic situationship. For the people who victim blame Dan for "asking" this, should feel ashamed of themselves. Jaekyung was clearly the abuser, to the superior position in the entire Jinx series and was aware of it himself.

I think in stories like this, the author has every right to dive into any kind of topic, even tough ones like this. It’d be strange if all writers just made ‘sanitized’ stories, avoiding the darker themes we know exist in real life. What really frustrates me about this work, though, isn’t just the clichéd attempt to justify the abuser, but also how illogical it all is plot-wise. Like, there’s this scene where Jaekyung suddenly shows up at the hospital to see the grandmother. It’s so out of character that it’s ridiculous, like they’re trying to make us believe he’s ‘not that bad.’ Look at him-he’s a terrible person, but he has a soft spot for a random stranger’s grandma he’s never even met. Up to this point, we’ve seen zero hints about Jaekyung’s past that could give us context or show another side of him. So when it gets to the grandma scene, it’s just not believable. And each chapter makes this character even more unlikeable-he’s pure evil with zero morals. And that would actually be fine if the story leaned into it, like setting it up so that everything ends badly for the characters, for example. Then it’d at least make psychological and narrative sense. I’m also not a fan of how Kim Dan’s character is shown. He’s 30, educated as a doctor, but he’s acting completely naive. With his ‘rescuer complex,’ he’s portrayed as a total doormat and honestly, not very smart. And okay, sure, you could have a character like that-something in his life might’ve made him this way, plus he has the sick grandma, his weak spot. In this situation, he might even ‘fall in love’ with his abuser (though obviously it’s not love, just a survival tactic for coping). But what bugs me is that Dan doesn’t seem to reflect on his life or situation at all; he’s written as a totally flat character. His so-called ‘love’ is shown one-sidedly and is romanticized like it’s a normal thing. And what’s even more irritating is that Jaekyung will probably get excused for everything; they’ll give him a ‘troubled childhood’ backstory, and everyone will just forgive him. So, no consequences for his actions. The story won’t have any kind of moral, point, or even remotely believable character development. So yeah, I think this work is weak not just for romanticizing abuse, but also because of its poor storytelling and character setup.

Due to curiosity, I read this author’s work (I’ve read BJ Alex before), and the amount of fans who fail to see the portrayal of this relationship as horrifying is shocking. They treat what MC going through as ‘oh he will get used to it soon ☹️ just another angst before things get fluffy again’ like no this isnt just some boyfriends arguing 🤦♂️ this is a crime. This isn’t some ‘bad boy x nerd’, that is a r*pist and a victim. If the story doesn’t end with the ‘love interest’ serving life in prison, then what’s the point? To satisfy a disgusting fantasy where if you stay long enough, thing’ll get better? Korean ‘romance’ authors just open a spreadsheet of red flags and start highlighting them with pink is truly a common sight to see.

Assult R cases in Korea is notorious to be lenient and has been discrimitory towards the victim rather than the prepetrator. In fact look up Miryang Gang Case, the victim has been harrassed by the family member of the prepetrator to the point of actually settling it with money withdrawing the case. Prior to that the victim was interrogated by the investigator as if she was the instigator to be abused by these so called middle school gangs. The most notible victim that brought the case to light, was that sadly her parents didn't give her the support throught this horrible investigation and harrasment, leading to the victim being super vurnable thus why she made that descision even tho they could have potentially won that case. Worse of the multiple prepetrators were living normal even some with successful lives that were exposed to the media. We haven't even touch the CR which you can look at Cho Doo-soon case which the most infurating part is the release section where the perp actualy lived not so far away from the victim.

She also stated that she knows these stories are problematic. I DESPISE this webtoon but I just wanted to repeat the authors notes. My conception is that she and her readers enjoy the extreme highs of extreme stories. There's no deeper meaning to it than it's a fictional fetish thing. I’ve read lots of yaoi manga, and a concerning amount of them romanticise these abusive, coercive relationships, but Jinx? Jinx is the worst I’ve read. I’m reading it at this point purely to see how it ends, not because I enjoy any part of it. It’s not even trying to take an interesting perspective on it (I’d argue Killing Stalking was an interesting viewpoint in a Stockholm syndrome relationship), Jinx is just…scary.

What angers me the most is that toxic relationships and romanticisation of sexual abuse is so common among bl manhwas. Seriously, trying to find a bl that is 18+ and is not toxic is almost impossible. It just shows how the community is more into someone being hurt, seeing it as something “hot” rather than consensual relationship, as it’s “more interesting” or “more intense” and views a healthy relationship as boring (also the consent in toxic manhwas is pretty much taken as when one of them (usually bottom) agrees to having a sexual relationship and not before every time they do the deed. So when they do it and he says “no i don’t want to” the answer is “but you agreed to”)(hope you get my point). Jinx’s case is just BJ Alex 2.0 - it was also toxic to the extreme and took very little time to get characters to like each other again, so not only toxic but also super rushed. It could’ve been way better if the author actually showed that it took time and a lot of effort to build trust once again (a similar motive is in Banana Scandal season 2 and the author handles it really well as it’s years that pass before they get together and not like a month) Forgive me for this long yapp but it’s rare to see someone talk about bl’s toxicity so I’m glad you’ve made this video and just wanted to share qwq

And your description of the 'ideal victim' hits hard. So many people are invalidated thanks to society's idea of what a victim is; most victims are complex and varied like Dan... really great analysis. Gotta admit although this mahwa is deeply flawed, Dan is way too relatable. I hope you saved some souls from attempting to read this sludge. I came across this series a couple of months ago and since I've been in this side of the internet for a long long time - I'm willing to give some series a chance to improve on their narrative if I see the potential (and I did see it happen few times), but this? This was just genuinely EXHAUSTING to read. I also wondered if I missed a tag or if I'm the only one having such a hard time comprehending how is Jaekyung constantly so... one-note evil? Like he is not even a complex character, it feels like watching a guy going "haha I wonder what new evil deeds I can do today" and twirling his invisible mustache. How is it fun for anyone to read asshole being asshole and everyone just accepting it? I stopped after like 20 chapters, completely giving up on it getting better and decided to look at comments... "someone wake me up when there is character development" "only here to see if the seme drops dead" and yeah... no I won't be waiting for that, I have like 10 others actually decently-written series, so thank you for telling me that Dan leaves his ass in the last chapter, at least some closure

Honestly, I used to be one of Jinx's defenders until the Q&A dropped. I genuinely thought that the author wasn't romanticizing their abusive relationship since Dan was always expressing to the readers his suffering and humiliation regarding his situation. But in the Q&A, it is evident that the author doesn't see how drastic their relationship dynamic has escalated for the worst. Mingwa only describes Jaekyung as a 'toxic male lead' (which is a complete understatement), and has a complete positive perspective towards all the smut scenes she has written. But the terrifying part is that Mingwa will now attempt to redeem a character that is completely irredeemable in the first place *with the mindset that is shown in the Q&A.* I had high hopes for this comic, but this changes everything.

Yall should read ouroboros. It's a BL that treated rape as rape and the healing/downfall of the victim after that. It was that one manhwa that was just a rare occurrence of a BL author writing their characters as HUMAN whose actions have CONSEQUENCES and not dolls that are made only for the alarmingly large number of BL readers with the rape kink..
@dodge17213 ай бұрын
i think ouroboros actually portrays rape how it is, which is different than what jinx attempts to do. most of these stories (not only bls) that do not deal with rape the way it should be dealt with, are just using it as “plot device”, not actual awful things that happen to people. hidoku shinaide starts with rape but in no way it portrays how any of the characters felt in regards to that, it was showed as an “inconveniece” at most (that when happened with the 2 main characters, SA that happens with other characters are dealt with properly). Bls and other stories like ouroboros that actually portray them how they are have completely different intentions. one is meant to entertain and show how their relationship and themselves as characters changes (for the better)) and the other intends to portray “real” people in traumatic situations. It’s just different, even though they deal with similar experiences. both are bad but only one is realistic (and should be treated as such).

But other than that- rape fantasy is literally the most common woman's sexual fantasy according to polls. It doesnt mean they actually want to be raped, but its a fact that its a very popular fantasy and its ok. People are and will in the future continue to make fictional narratives around it.
