At 85 years old, Jiro Ono is considered by many to be the best shokunin (sushi craftsman) in the world. His restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro, lies in a Tokyo subway station and seats only ten, yet attracts patrons from all over the world. Awarded three Michelin stars, a 15-minute meal will set you back about $375. In Jiro Dreams of Sushi, director David Gelb captures the magic of the legendary chef and his relationship with both family and food. Available for streaming on Netflix starting August 23rd.

I personally loved this documentary, espacially compared to "King Georges" since you learned a lot more about the process and the thought behind the food, not the story of the restaurant. It's sad that it is temporary not available on Netflix. Would love to see much more documtentaries beeing centered around cooking and not the history of the chefs.

This isnt a documentary about food. Its a documentary about human excellence. Where it comes from and how it is achieved. Sometimes high art comes in the most inauspiscious places. Even something as small as sushi can be an artform, and some rice and a fillet of fish can be a masterpiece.

@@michaelkavanagh932 From what I've read, the restaurant used to be available to the general public, even though it was difficult to get in. (as in calling a reservation there would be a several month waiting period). But for the past couple of years now, the restaurant only takes people through three different ways. One, you would have to be a regular customer who had been going for years already. Two, you need to have special connections to get in. And three, if you are a tourist or whatever, you can only make a reservation through a concierge at a specific 5-star hotel. I don't know which hotel though.......

I think we should not see this as a restaurant anymore. A food that can’t be tasted by 99% of the population isn’t really food. And no matter how good it is, it’s nothing but pictures and words. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a amazing man, but I don’t think of him as a chef, I see him more like some sort of artist.

what else do you think he'd rather be doing? I think he's living his dream, and with how successful he is I'm sure he's very well off. he spent a life mastering his craft, and he's universally accepted as the master of that craft. and even his family seems happy, healthy and both his sons take after his success and work ethic. what else could you want in life?
@torenatkinson5708
@torenatkinson5708 Жыл бұрын
@@Jack-rk7jc For me, it was travelling. Challenging myself to try new things, even if they're scary and new. I'm especially realizing this as I get older. Go volunteer to pull invasive species from a marsh with a group of strangers. Take a night course to learn a new language. Teach yourself to play an instrument and join a band and play some gigs in front of a crowd. My expertise is drawing, and I try to get better at that through my career, but I don't want to live my life with tunnel vision. I don't want to assume that he NEVER gets out for a night on the town or anything like that, but that's kind of the way the doc portrays him. As the old adage goes, it's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't done. Anyway, that's my opinion. Yours may differ!
