Why don't you use an old steel ruler as the bushings - same metal much longer before adjustment needed or wear?

At 0:50 only one of the brass strips needs to be movable. The other piece is fixed square. And therefore you only need one screw in the middle of the moveable brass piece. 3 adjustments no longer required.

Excelent video as allways... as a teacher, i tend to share the slider ruler with my students, and what i see is that they forguet to unscrew the fixing screw. i sugest you to add a material on the screw-ruller interface such as a bronce strip to avoid tearing off the numbers. Best regards!

Well done, next upgrade, a small cutout to see the numbers better and add a blade for the arrow across the cutout to help align. Further upgrade, you're always using a marker, insert the marker in the instrument.

I had to search it up too. They're called optical center punches. Pretty pricey for a center finder, but after seeing it being used I'm going to need to add this to my list of things I want but will wait to spend a gift card on.

Just a light hearted comment - If I made the marking gauge, I would firmly fix one strip of metal and use the other piece to connect against the ruler. Cheers.

I think it is a good idea to fix a pad under the tightening knob , so that it is not scratching the as ruler.

It seems like this should just be for measuring and not for squaring. You will always be fighting the play in an adjustable device you use to square. Just my 2 cents....

Great update. I would grind a little of the corner of adjustable brass parts where you insert ruller for easier insertion.

For the upper (light) part, make a ruler clip, in the form of a brass plate. Otherwise, the ruler screw will scrape the ruler and destroy the markings. This will make the plate slide over the marking.

Beautiful I do that when fixing bolts or screws I screw down in opposite diagonal corners and then I tighten each one fully it keeps the item straight and flush

Hello, I have purchased and took a look at your plans for this Marking Gauge which almost seem complete except for Assy Dwg 04 which I believe the 4-M4x112mm low head bolt is incorrect and should be M4x12mm lg. I hope you would correct this and let me know. Thanks for the plans.

Moi je l'ai fait en mettant un bout de caoutchouc de chambre à air de mon vélo entre vis et règle? C'est parfait et s'il faut le changer ben pas de problème. la règle métallique aussi propre qu'au début !
