Once he gets perfectly straight lumber he makes these videos showing us his magnificent creations. I've never seen a cleaner woodworker. This build inspired me to make one, which I have now done with a few changes, works very well & I think I’ll make a smaller one with a 6inch ruler to keep the other one company. I looked through the comments on this & you don’t need anything other than basic tools to do the Superior one, trust me. My version doesn’t even require the locking internal plate, as long as the bolt is in the threaded insert straight and flatten/polish the bolt end it seats & locks the ruler fab, saves more too, thank you for sharing!👍

Thank you for this very useful little tool. In my opinion the first design is much more inspired than the second : no need for super expensive machines, much sober and perfectly doing the job : simplicity is always the end of the road ...
@rb-ex2 жыл бұрын
the first one is more beautiful than the second one, which is trying to be beautiful and 'inspirational'. simplicity and directness in problem-solving is beautiful. obsession is not. stay simple and direct to the problem, dont go mental, and everything will always turn out ok. the way you milled the slot with adhesive sandpaper on the ruler was excellent

For the part to touch the work, I used rosewood with high wear resistance and used brass for the part where the ruler touched. The leaf spring is glued so that the screw does not hit the ruler directly. As a armchair quarterback who makes nothing, I would have used the brass on the darker wood so it would stand out more. I think you could also make a half inch set on the end side with a solid metal line and then a inch on the other end. Then you would have 1 adjustable and 2 fixed for common measurements. Of course I could never make something so amazing. Brass and wood is a classic look. love it.

You inspired me to make one. It's far from perfect, but gave me joy to make. Also will be functional! Handmade everything except the ruler and socket head cap screw. Note the ‘impossible’ dovetail. Top timber red box (Eucalyptus polyanthemos), possibly red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) - not sure. Was a garden stake that was left on the side of the road. Bottom black-butt (Eucalyptus pilularis) I live in Australia. There are such amazing hardwoods here, that sadly mostly end up as firewood or chipped and shipped to Japan for paper making.

Just an idea but locking the ruler with rare earth magnets would work, one in the ruler bed flush & another in the end of the brass bolt, just lifting that out would enable you to adjust the ruler then pop back in to lock, I am tempted to do this with the smaller one when I get round to it.

Beautiful!!! Although the first one is much more affordable to make. In my case, I just started learning woodworking and don't have power tools at all, just a drill. I know drills are amazing and you can do a lot of things with them, but I don't have a CNC and I still have to learn a lot of things. As of today, I think I prefer the first one because is the one I can fabricate with my own hands and much more affordable tools. But great work!!! Both are super nice!!! =D
