Great respect to Fabio Gurgel. I think he is somehow right, the level in general is better now a days. But Roger Gracie finished Buchecha, that gotta mean something.

We need to understand that the fighter and the style are two separate things. Roger finished Buchecha, but this tells only that Roger fought better than Buchecha in that particularly moment. It's not an absolute proof that the "abc" is simply better than the more recent techniques. As Fabio said, there are moments that a berimbolo will be of use. A true fighter must have complete control over all of the techniques.

Roger Gracie isn't old school--he maybe old compared to you but he didn't get his black belt until 2004. Gurgel is talking about the jiu-jitsu of the '90s and earlier. He's basically saying (without saying it) that Rickson Gracie's jiu-jitsu is much inferior to the jiu-jitsu of guys like Keenan Cornelius.
@Dreaming-112 жыл бұрын
@@profd65 He's not saying that at all. Rickson's jiu-jitsu also evolved a lot over the years (his son Kron won the ADCC beating Garry Tonon using what he learned from his father). He's not talking about fighters, he's talking about different periods of time.

Nico Contreras since they stopped attacking legs judo has lost a lot of it's valuable techniques, and I see wrestling as more suitable for mma and self defense.
@nicocontreras53665 жыл бұрын
@@flawlessfusionproject5430 That´s not true, that change sucked I agree but just like Greco, Judo has a lot of value, legs attacks are not everything and it has many of the fundamental techniques BJJ has and while for MMA I´d prefer wrestling for self defense is very good.

Judo is totally under untilized in MMA, its great for clinching and low risk takedowns
@AlexN20224 жыл бұрын
in wrestling or MMA you take down and stay down. Great for MMA, not so great for self defense. I have never been in a 1x1 fight outside of competition. In Judo you throw and you can stay up. Which is what you want when there are more people around. For karate, US is lagging way behind. Serach KZbin for Kudo.

I respect both of these guys tremendously, but disagree with them to some extent. I don't hear the leading voices (as I see it) in the re-emerging "self defense first" camp (think Rickson's JJGF) telling people to ignore new sports-based techniques altogether. I have a subscription to Gracie University and Rener and Ryron include a Sports Guard Chapter in the first part of the Master Cycle (road to blue belt stripe 1). Rickson claims to routinely come across black belts at seminars who can't properly escape headlocks, so to me, only one "side" is ignoring part of the art. I don't mean all sports-based schools are, but it sounds like Rickson and Dave Kama have seen enough of it and I take them at their word. Also, Prof Gurgel uses an example of an elite competitor with his open guard in a street fight scenario. I don't see that as the relevant example. We should be asking "what techniques does a 50 year old mom of four need to master given her limited resources: time, $, athletic ability, etc?" This is who Gracie JJ is supposed to primarily serve.

@@jims512 there are some situations thats true but there are others you can choose not to fight and swallow your pride and thats the majority I see when a street fight takes place. Nevertheless my point is that if chances are low of that happening how can always see a beautiful art and a mean of expresión as bjj is as a self defense thing? Y dont care about that aspect, I understand some people do but on the street I would stop using my Spider guard and use other tactics

Fabio came to Alliance San Diego last year. He showed our school something that literally changed the way I approach passing and it was something so small. it's really not a methodology, it's just a little move but that move allows me to continuously attempt to pass when I'm caught in dela riva or when I'm standing and they've got me in a half guard variation.

And this is coming from a real old school guy in Gurgel. It stands to reason that the top level athletes are miles ahead from the guys when Gurgel was at the top. It's all just different now and if buttscooting isn't your thing don't watch the lightweights and there won't be a lot of that, or don't watch pro jiu jitsu.
@MrHeathcliff835 жыл бұрын
how old are the most other arts? most about hundrets maybe thousands of years. bjj, GRACIE jiu jitsu is about what? not 100 years. its like a beatiful little DEADLY kid that has to be hugged, developed and LOVED! lets help this kid to stay one of most beautiful ARTS in the WORLD.
@rowanbae40315 жыл бұрын
Well essentially BJJ is old school Judo with a HEAVY emphasis on Newaza (ground fightng) which is yeah hundreds of years old. However, the techniques themselves could be up to thousands years old.
@scarred103 жыл бұрын
sport bjj is not beautiful to watch,its a disaster as a spectator sport,its great to practise.Also,if self defense bjj wasnt preserved by the gracie academy and the valentes,it would be almost dead in modern bjj.I would only ever train in a school that taugth defense against strikes first and then later after blue belt,sport bjj grappling.Also,basic takedown principles and sparring needs to be trained regularly.
@anonymouse70955 жыл бұрын
I agree and I disagree. In terms of what happens on the ground, I think that the sport has evolved. That’s pretty obvious and only a fool would deny it. It’s more effective than it used to be, and if you don’t know the new stuff, you are far behind the curve. But a lot of modern schools, including the one where I train now, do not include any of the old school self-defense techniques. My instructor knows all of that stuff, but he doesn’t teach the students how to block punches and defend against standing bear hugs and that sort of thing. I learned all of that stuff years ago, but I had to take a long break from jujitsu and have only recently started training again. My instructor is a high-level black belt, and I know that I can achieve a lot with him, but I think it’s really unfortunate that his other students will not have the opportunity to learn the traditional self-defense standing stuff.
@arturobustamante98284 жыл бұрын
FYI ... Gurgel’s black belts teach all those basic self defense techniques
@anonymouse70954 жыл бұрын
Arturo Bustamante Which is excellent. Unfortunately, my instructor, who is a high-level black belt, chooses not to do that. I don’t know why. It frustrates me.
@arturobustamante98284 жыл бұрын
Anony Mouse wow... that’s very unfortunate. Everyone can use those basic self defense techniques. They should be included in all BJJ school’s curriculums regardless of how competitive your school is.
@jims5124 жыл бұрын
+Anony. You are 100% correct, my friend. The sports aspect of JJ (aside from competition, obviously) is a way for students to explore sparring and stoke theircompetitive fire while training one's ability to be accept being uncomfortable and remaining in the fight. That said, the value of all of that only exists to the extent that the student has a strong self defense base. Period.

@@garrydye2394 That´s true but another good reason is that in many schools guys get to advanced belts without knowing the basics of BJJ for a more realistic setting but they are experts in many crazy guards and moves. The fundamentals are still there though.
