I recently wrote JJ a message on IG which he replied to (and I was so happy for it lol) about hand checking and illegal defense and how it changed the game. The Glove is right about handchecking but what he says is true only if you are actually stronger than the player you are guarding. Back then it was called the “isolation era” for a reason. They gave a slight advantage for defenders against most players but on the other hand you could create easier 1 on 1 opportunities without the help defense being able to arrive in time. And with all time level isolation scorers like MJ,Shaq,Kareem etc. it didn’t really matter if you handcheck them or not bc they are just better, faster, stronger. The removal of illegal defense took that fairly easily accessible isolation away, therefore you could put multiple defenders in their way forcing the ball out of the star’s hands more, and forcing the game more to the outside which is why we see so much shooting today. This is actually the main difference between today’s NBA and 80-90’s NBA. Defenses are better today overall because one defender can never cause so much trouble as many defenders. Players were forced to be better because defense got better. The very best players could never be stopped 1 on 1 on a regular basis, so you could only force the ball out by changing he rules and allowing more advanced defensive sets to do that. My final point is that it was harder to beat 1 defender back then but the MJ’s and Shaq’s were never truly bothered by handchecking, but you can’t access such clear isolation plays anymore and it’s always harder to score against a team of players than a single one. Some kind of rule change around handchecking imo would be ideal for the league to take away some of the scoring, for examlpe brining back the handchecking below the FT line extended like it was in the early 2000’s. That type of rule system was perfect, only players couldn’t shoot well enough to stretch the floor like today therefore the best defenses of NBA history (statistically) were in those days, and saw series like the Pacers-Pistons where a 180 total points scored in a game seemed like a lot. This would still allow ball handlers and shooters to do what they do, but you would at least give a chance for defenses against 5 out offenses (with 4-5 capable shooters on the court) that have an unstoppable 1 on 1 players like Lebron,KD,Giannis,Jokic for examlpe. This could go the wrong way and force the game to the outside more, and teams without good shooters would have more problems, but could bring back some size and physicality to the game possibly forcing players the evolve further into position-less basketball. This would mean a limitation to undersized pointguards too on the long term. Idk if the downside is too big but they could try it imo. Maybe extending the 3 seconds in the paint rule to 4 or 5 seconds could also be enough to reduce some scoring, which is slightly out of hands right now. (Exposing illegal defense rules was only possible with the right positioning with a players isolating inside usually with a post up, and others standing where the defenders couldn’t leave them unless they commit to the ball, which usually ended up in an open shot. Teams didn’t shoot bc they could score without it most of the time efficiency enough. 2PT% in the Playoffs and 2PA are all lower in post illegal defense rules in the Playoffs as well)

the Glove is right about him changing the game. He was the first true perimeter lockdown point guard which later became an important part of limiting offenses
