JK Jeep Wrangler P0456 Small EVAP Leak 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

In this video, I show where you can develop an EVAP leak from. On the rear top portion of the gas tank, there is a vent assembly that has various port coming off of it. One of the ports can become stressed by a lack of slack in the associated line that is attached to it. Over time the tension unnecessarily applied to the port can weaken it. If weakened enough, it will develop a crack. Removal of the zip ties of said line will aid in creating enough comfort for the port. You can then just put some plastic epoxy on the crack and clear the CEL.

Great video. That's exactly what mine was several years ago, on my 2009. A friend found and fixed it your way. That lasted a few years, then it broke loose. My son epoxied it again, then put a hose & clamps around it to hopefully keep it sturdier. A few years later, I just got the code again. Looks like some more mother/son time. Lol

Wow! We bought this Jeep and have had the 0456 code on and off shortly after we bought it. I have cleared it out a couple of times and it takes a while for it to come it back. Got a feeling previous owner had it cleared out but we love the jeep. Been looking at cures for this and you put me on it. The fitting with the green connector is cracked. Did a smoke test and found the problem. Was in a bind to get this done for tags and smog test in California. Did as video instructed and got my tags. Thank you very much.

I wish I would've seen this video sooner. I did the gas cap and purge valve. Had two different shops smoke my Jeep. One told me it was my charcoal canister... I ended up doing it myself, the shop wanted $500 for parts and labor, still had CEL. The next shop told me it was my gas cap, that it wasn't the original and should buy the original and come back and smoke it again if I got another CEL. It came back on today and then I came across your video that precisely pointed out where the leak was. I could not believe it, thank you so much.

I actually found the leak right where you pointed out. Extremely helpful video. To get the clamps off you squeeze the end of the tube and theres a grey clamp that comes off.

Just repaired my’14 JK where this nipple broke all the way off when I was searching for my P0456 code. Also removed the cable ties, and relieved the stress on the evap line. Then secured them to the emergency brake lines above, with no stress on repaired nipple.

This definitely helped me out alot. I just got done with replacing all the fuel injectors due to a bad missfire. Drove my jeep for about a week and then had the engine light come on again. Had this same prob on my 2010 JK. Dealer told me they needed to install an entirely new gas tank ($1500 !!!), but they would try this as a temp fix. Worked for about a year, now I am getting the gascap light again (no CEL yet). Going to try this fix myself.

Love the vid and it helped a lot. However, rather than the left side, I actually found cracks on the right side line with the GREEN connector fitting. Either way the vid helped a lot and I found what I was looking for. Just another thought for something to look for!

I really appreciate this video giving me something to check. Ironically, though, I just wanted to tell you it WAS my gas cap. Seal wasn’t cracked or anything. Tested it and it failed miserably. Installed new cap and code cleared itself 3 drive cycles later. In my experience bad gas caps do give a Gross leak, not small, but that wasn’t the case on mine!! Check your gas caps!

Great video. Wish I had a camera that did that well. The line you fixed was chewed up on mine jeep would not sell me a new line so adapted a rubber hose in its place.

Did your new line work? How did you attach it to the tank port side? My plastic tube broke at the port that comes from the tank.

@@matsulli2086 My new line did work but now I have the sensor telling me something is wrong again. Have not had time to go look at it. Probably the squirrel again. I was not broken at the port but chewed up the line a few inches and so had some tubing to work with

Make sure to scuff up the plastic good if using RTV. RTV doesn't bind well to plastic because of it's smooth texture. Also make sure it's rated for fuel/vapor.

Just a heads up. I broke the nipple completely off while removing the hose, it is very fragile. I had to attach it with a roll pin in order to JB weld it, almost thought I was going to have to replace the gas tank.

I’d change the small canister on the bottom and de purge valve also. Code keep on coming back and today I actually got. GASCAP on the odometer. I when to a jeep dealer and got me a new gas cap, I reset the code and it came back…. Can u help me please

The whole tank? Couldn't you just get that one part? What'd you call it, the evap filter..... canister.....? It looks like it comes out of the tank, so dropping it I could understand, but replacing completely?

It's not replaceable. The junction of evap ports on the tank are glued onto the tank. Making it non replaceable.

The evap system should be a sealed system. Therefore it was implied that the expoy would seal and reinforce the broken connection.

I got the check engine light. Went to autozone and had them run the check and got the same evap code. I replaced the gascap at their suggestion. That did not work! I decided to continue to use the new gascap "just in case". Check engine light is still on. A few weeks later, my "GASCAP" light comes on. I go back to my original gascap, and the light is still on. Came across this video. Mine literally snapped off in half a second with almost no pressure, so yeah, it was cracked. One thing of note, you cannot replace that part!! It's built into the gas tank! So stupid! $1,100+labor+on back order!!! I thought I was stuck with a hefty bill to try and pass my emissions test. Well, I used Gorilla Glue and then slathered it in JB Weld for extra hold. Pulled the negative on the battery, and it cleared my codes. 3 days later and several hundred miles, and the check engine light is still off. Whew! BUT, my GASCAP light is still on!! Not sure how the emissions test will go for thar. Any suggestions on how to get my GASCAP light off?

Chrysler is terrible with that GAS CAP message. Might need to actually clear the codes with a scanner or small hand held equivalent. Key on engine off to clear the codes. If the engines running, the codes won't clear.

Unfortunately yes. That port is not a serviceable part and comes with the tank.

@@matsulli2086 Don't plug the line. It's part of the evaporative emission system. When the gas sloshes around in the tank and is subjected to temperature changes, fumes are generated. These fumes are then cycled up to the engine to be burned through the combustion process instead of being released into the atmosphere when you take the gas cap off. With all that said. It's not going to make the vehicle run any different if it's broken off for the time being. The only danger is that fumes could be released and cause a fire since it's close to the exhaust. That scenario would be an extremely rare case but it's worth noting regardless.

For my 2006 Jeep Wrangler X I got code P0456. So I checked the lines, changed the gas cap with an oem one, and changed the purge valve. It still came back on. Then I changed the the leak detector pump and the light went out immediately. Now two weeks later it came back on with the same code. Any ideas anyone?

You've probably solve it by now but... anytime I touch an area and it effects the problem I'm pretty sure that has something to do with it. Since changing the pump had an effect but then returned 2 weeks later I would check the wiring and connector to the leak detector pump.

Guess what. Tonight I just pulled the leak detector pump (ESIM switch) to check if it's o-ring is healthy and the same thing has happened now with my jeep. Didn't touch any wires. Still have perm codes P0456 and P0457 but the pending and active and MIL all disappeared. And it also disappeared another unrelated code as well. Weird. And smog readiness for EVAP hasn't cleared yet either and I don't really expect that it well since I haven't located the problem yet. I'm going to test this procedure on another jeep and see if the active and pending clears. (same codes on another wrangler). Going to check the wiring. But it's weird because I know mine didn't have a chance to run the test so not sure how it cleared. Did you diagnose yours yet?

I did replace the LDP with a Dorman one. Since then I noticed a really loud noise coming from the back of the Jeep every morning for about a min and it was really hard to pump gas in my Jeep. So I finally replaced it with a OEM LDP and no light so far, no loud noise every morning coming from the back, and I can pump gas in my car without it shutting off every 2 seconds. Fingers crossed.

Long shot but have either of you ever find a solution? I'm having the hardest time. I get p0455,p0456, and p0457 and the gascap light. The gas tank was replaced (it's the entire assembly including pump) I replaced the Charcoal canister, leak detection pump, gas cap, purge control valve, and replaced the filler tube with one with the valve in it and nothing is working. I've inspected every plastic line I can see and they all look prefect. It's driving me nuts and I'm so sick of this stupid jeep

My 2011 JK has a slight gas smell on the opposite site of the gas cap near the back right tire, it only smells when it is sitting but not driving, I can’t smell it in the car either, I saw online it might be bad o rings or gas caps like you were saying in this video, I’ll have to check to see if I have that crack too, any feedback would be great from anyone, thanks!

My first thoughts are that you do not have an evap leak. If the check engine light is working but it's not on then it's unlikely the gas smell is evap related. You might have a raw fuel leak between the tank and the engine. Not enough to drip but enough to make the smell while sitting for a while. Also a slight fuel leak between pump and engine might not set the light.

Tank is plastic and if the tank was leaking then you would have an evap code.

At this point, you need to have someone smoke test the system. It's going to be the only way to find out where the leak is.
