Mine was constantly falling out of first. Tried all the free remedies and none worked. Finally tried replacing the shifter with the B&M product and that did it for me. Problem solved. Not free, but it works.

rich swanson 👍🏻That was the direction I was headed until I stumbled upon this adjustment. Since I haven't had any more problems, I didn't order one but if they would ever get the price down some more I would still like it for tightening up the shifts.

was also looking into the B&M one. Haven't bought the jeep yet but am going to and it popped out of 1st 3 times on my test drive. cant decide if i want to waste money on a warranty that will try to duck out of fixing the problem
@overlandexpeditionspeciali59135 жыл бұрын
@@smoldt88 I don't think I would buy the warranty for this specifically, since one of these two things will likely cure it (unless they toasted the syncros then you might want that warranty). I bought mine with 5k miles on it and remember it popping out in the middle of an intersection but thought at the time it was just me not being used to the clutch. If you test drive it again before buying, maybe try to really feel for the engagement and hold the clutch a little longer to see if it will engage properly. Or if the owner is cool or you get to test drive it by yourself then pop the outer shift boot up to relieve some of the tension or look inside and see if the inner boot is torn or bunched.

I changed my transmission and it fixed everything

My Jeep is popping out of first gear non-stop. Doesn’t matter if it’s on an incline or not. Just started happening one day and I’ve had to abandon using first gear. I figured I should try this before I bring it to a shop finally. I’m just having trouble understanding what I need to exactly do. Do I change the boot and adjust the transmission? It’s kind of tough for me to see what you are adjusting underneath the car from the video.

Let me rephrase that. I just am unsure what to exactly loosen and tighten underneath the car.

There is a crossmember that is connected from driver side of frame to passenger side of frame below your transmission. Directly below your transmission there are 3 holes recessed in that crossmember which have a nut and stud in each hole. Loosen but do not remove those nuts. At that point you can use a prybar to wiggle your transmission forward or back to adjust the alignment or as I mentioned in the video parking on an incline or decline at that point uses gravity to move the weight of transmission and engine for you. Don't drive long distances to do this but have the "hill" or whatever near the vehicle when you decide to loosen the nuts. Then tighten the nuts with it in the inclined or declined position. MAKE SURE TRANSMISSION IS IN GEAR WITH PARKING BRAKE ON AND WHEEL CHOCKED BEFORE CRAWLING UNDER. It may take a couple of adjustments to fine tune it to make sure it doesn't start popping out of reverse, hence the incline or decline to move transmission forward or back.

The boot is inspected from above by removing the outer boot attached at the console. Then you will see the inner boot which may have popped off/got torn/or just be too tight. This is simplest thing to check first but be careful when popping outer boot ring From console to avoid breaking plastic clips, pry gently at rear and then slide ring back away from Dash to remove.

goo.gl/images/fkp8jD The transmission nuts/studs that you will loosen should look like this. 3 total

Overland, my 2008 pops out of 1st....fid this "fix" permanently fix this issue?
@overlandexpeditionspeciali59134 жыл бұрын
J W I would have to say 99% yes. Once or twice a year I will grind first gear and it pop out (105k miles) but even that is probably user error. But I also have a leather shift boot and replaced the rubber boot underneath, so it could be a combination, but it popped more frequently until I adjusted the transmission on the crossmember. It’s atleast free to try and adjust it.

Little confused, sorry. Mine is popping out of first...so park on a decline? I want to try this before installing the b&m
@overlandexpeditionspeciali59136 жыл бұрын
Jonathan McIntyre If first is popping, try parking on an incline, or if you have a big prybar that you can manage to squeeze under there, but for me with stock suspension it was easier to just let gravity do the work, just make sure the vehicle is secure before climbing under there. My instructions may have been confusing or reversed because I originally was popping out of 1st gear and then after changing out the crossmember completely was popping out of reverse, so I did a little of both, which you might if the transmission slides too far back, it shouldn't take too much movement to make a difference.

OverlandExpeditionSpecialists thanks much for clarifying. Mine pops out of first only if I'm taking off with much torque on it. Just resting my hand on the shift knob will stop it from popping out.
@overlandexpeditionspeciali59136 жыл бұрын
Jonathan McIntyre Have you double checked that the inner boot is in its proper place? I used to get first pop a lot when leaving a stop sign or light, so mine was probably similar that it just wasn't fully engaging. After the crossmember adjustment during the winter I sometimes have the rubber keep me from fully hitting reverse, but it's when temps are below zero so I know the rubber is stiff and keeping from fully engaging, but the nice thing is I don't punch the gas in reverse the way I would in first at a stoplight, so I don't get that nasty thump that sounds like the transmission is dropping out of the Jeep 😉

OverlandExpeditionSpecialists I took it apart this morning. Sure enough it's got a rip and wasn't seated properly. Where's the best place to order one? Thanks for all the advice here...was discouraged. Just bought my 08 and want to leave it stock for a nice summer driver and go to leave a light in town on a hill and BAM out of first. Next will be the b&m if there is an issue.

Jonathan McIntyre I ordered my replacement from Quadratec, but Morris 4x4 also usually carries a good selection of factory replacement parts, so you could price compare between the two.
