In Brazil, if you force someone to kiss you lewdly, it's rape. That's not common knowledge, but it's the law. When I found out that other countries would only configure penis penetration as rape, I was shocked.

Yeah, trans-men are assaulted pretty much as often trans-women, but they get lumped in with cis women so it's ignored as an issue. That screws up stats for everyone. Trans folks as a whole are the victims of some of the worst sexual assaults. But the narrative for trans-women gets flipped around to make them the predators deserving of harm and trans-men are ignored bc they live in a middle ground of being men (who society doesn't think gets assaulted) and "lost women" (which society doesn't care about certain women getting r*ped). The fear-mongering is as dangerous as it is disgusting. What is JK Rowling's endgame here? To get trans folks killed? Because that's what all the hysteria and misinformation will lead to.

To my "best friend I wish I had growing up": As a 50-something Gay cisgender male, I knew after my first fist fight in highschool, that simply existing will at times be exhausting. We may wish to see a day come when these battles will stop, that we can go on with our lives without having to deal with aggression, both macro and micro, against us. I know, from experience, it only gets worse if we try to do it alone. So, as fellow veteran/ally, please know I will always proudly stand with you. If you would question your biases a bit more you would notice that those are all the same stereotypes of the same group and which is men - regardless of cultural background. Man who come out as Trans-Woman just receive the female privileged of being seen as vulnerable and worthy of protection by society While they loose the male privileged of being seen as a dangerous animal barely civilized who could hurt woman at any point. Rowling just spouts the usual radfem misandrist stereotypes society has normally no major problem with. The only difference here is that it is directed at (Trans-) Woman. It is sad that man have to identify as a woman to get the protection against hatred everyone should deserve. But we live in a society were it is still ok to ask man to go out of their way not to frighten a woman as if man are inherently evil and dangerous.

Much of the most poisonous hatred towards transwomen seem to be coming from radical feminists, and it seems to be misandry directed towards transwomen. I think that trans women are women, but radical feminists will never accept them as women. They consider all men inherently dangerous and trans women even more so. As if trans women have found a way to game the system so that they should be allowed into womens restrooms or locker rooms. Many trans activists I have seen seem to be taking the stance that men are dangerous, but they are women who should be protected from men like any other women, instead of addressing and fighting the core issue, which is misandry.

@@Lewis_McCartney yeah after reading her books I don't have a feeling she's the brightest to be honest. A lot of things in the HP universe lack logic if you think about it for more than half a second. It's not just because it's for kids, because even in recent years when she tried to expand on them with the wizarding world and the cursed child it just got dumber for no reason. And in her desire to seem more progressive than she actually is she even made some things worse (like the whole plot about Hermione just HAVING TO LEARN that it's wrong to try to free some species from slavery, read EXTRA YIKES if Hermione is black). She's just not nearly as smart as she thinks she is but after the success of HP, the people around seem incapable of telling her that. Hence the absolute mess that are the scripts of the Fantastic Beasts movies because she doesn't know how to write movie scripts, won't admit it because she has no self-awareness, and she's surrounded by yes-men. Her transphobic bs is just an extension of that. It makes no sense if you actually turn on your brain and look at the real facts and stats before reading her condescending essay full of logical fallacies. For me, beyond her blatant transphobia, her racial insensitivity (displayed in a books), the fact that she makes no sense yet she's sooo sure that she does, really grinds my gears. With bigots like Tucker Carlson and B-word Shapiro, you have a sense that they are making this for money and that on some level they are aware that they're somewhat exaggerating. But she isn't aware of that. She truly thinks of herself as progressive, smart, a good screenwriter... and that's the worst part for me because that mindset doesn't lead to improvement.

I think there's a great deal of celebrity vanity, there, too. Rowling got pretty used to being applauded for seeming progressive, then all of a sudden got on the wrong side of that generally-progressive audience, then fell into a cycle of doubling down when it came to a group she herself really didn't want to include in her vision of society. She actually seemed to have a similar impulse about twenty years ago, when the Christian Right was accusing her of 'promoting Paganism' even if she doesn't know the first thing about it. She got a lot of publicity out of those public fights, but she did pretty blithely throw Pagan people under the bus in the name of actually being 'wholesome fare' (unlike some others not really involved but catching flak anyway, apparently,) So happens a lot of Pagans like Harry Potter, not the least cause we were accused of using it to 'push witchcraft on children' and had to take some notice. (Sound familiar?) Of course there's no more Pagan content there than anything else touching on British folklore in general, never mind magic in particular, but instead of simply saying that, she managed to say some pretty offputting things in her own 'defense.' Not on the same scale of impact, but really a similar pattern, like 'Oh, no, having *those* people in my world would really be horrible, everyone's good nominal Christians.' It eventually blew over, but we were accused a lot of using Harry Potter to what... 'recruit and prey on children' by those Fundamentalist loonies, but with them if it's not one thing it's another, and we know most popular entertainment generally has nothing to do with us and tends to get it wrong if it tries, so that's kind of OK. :)

JK is not OK. Does she not see the irony of how she treats transwomen being analogous to the treatment of muggle born witches/wizards during Voldemort's reign of the Ministry? Seriously, this is about accurate representation and getting records straight, as a way of protecting women. But that doesn't fit JK's exclusionary feminism, which, in my opinion, isn't feminism, because feminism is about equality and equity of both sexes.

There are a lot of unsettling things between her beliefs and her books. For example: The Wizarding World is a place where magic is used for everything. Work, entertainment, protection, transportation, etc. It's their version of tech for all intents and purposes. Wands are necessary to perform the vast majority of magic. Non-humans aren't allowed to possess wands. This ban was created after an event known as the Goblin Rebellions. Rebellions typically happen after large amounts of mistreatment occurs. Non-humans also aren't allowed to go to magical institutions. So we have a world where non-humans are seen as threats by the government and have been stripped of the ability to protect themselves, find non-menial work, etc. They also can't leave the Wizarding World to live someplace else as they have that magical masquerade going on. If they attempt to leave, and thus potentially reveal the existence of the supernatural to muggles, then they legally punished, which might include getting sent to Azkaban where they will have their souls slowly sucked out. And that's if they can leave with their lack of magical tools and knowledge. All because "they could be a potential threat" Under normal circumstances one might think this is just set up for an interesting plot. We have a dark world filled with injustices that the heroes have to deal with. First in school and later after graduation. However after reading her tweets this might be honestly how she sees the world.

JK Rowling showed her true Reactionary colours when she came out in support of British Nationalism in 2014 and was one of the biggest opponents to Scottish self determination. More specific to the issues at hand. Nicola Sturgeon seems very motivated to get the trans recognition act through and she's a pretty decent politician and I suspect her decision to enter a formal coalition with the Greens is partially motivated by ensuring a majority for this Act. Scotland being tarred as part of "TERF Island" is aomewhat unfair. While there are a few high profile TERFs like Rowling and Joanne Cherry, they are not mainstream and not supported by wider society and Scotland is moving forward on these issues and with good support from wider society.

Woke up and I'm about half way through currently. As someone who was r*ped by a transwoman multiple times, and as a trans rights supporter (being nb myself). I have never felt comfortable discussing this specific instance of r*pe with anyone (I have been r*ped by cis men and women multiple times as well, that trans one was worse as she was my partner for 3 years and was abusive in every way) because I don't want to further the narrative that trans women are r*pists. Because that isn't true. She was because she was a horrible person before she transitioned and became worse when people began loving and supporting her in the community as she felt she could get away with anything. She even convinced our mutuals that I actually abused and r*ped her leading to many hate messages calling me a r*pist. What rowling is doing is also hurtful because for people like me who still love and support my fellow trans siblings, we want to help protect their rights and by making everyone think that this community is full of bad actors makes it hard for even (at the time) cis women to come forward when they do get assaulted by a trans person. I'm still watching just wanted to write this before I forgot, I appreciate the coverage on stuff like this a lot! Edit: I also want to mention that when I told my "friends" about this when it was happening no one believed me because "trans women don't do stuff like that, you must be misremembering" these friends were ones she allowed me to have and she was abusing them as well. She used them to abuse me further by using them as spies to get me to talk about whats wrong so she could know what "lies I was spreading behind her back". She was awful.

I've said before, given that Rowling threw open the door to a Queer Theory reading of her books, it's fair to analyze how she portrayed the villain of the series. Voldemort is someone who changes his birth name, changes his appearance into something described as more monstrous, begins speaking in a higher pitched voice, commits acts considered in violation of nature, and constantly seeks to invade spaces where he doesn't belong. Does any of this sound familiar? Whether intentionally or not, the author pulled from existing villainous tropes and clichés, for which there is a longstanding precedent to queer code the villains to signal that the audience is meant to hate them. Now, Rowling had every opportunity to make him a more sympathetic character, given that he was abandoned by his father and grew up in an orphanage, but she chose not to. My biggest problem though is that the series is themed around fighting to maintain the status quo. Harry is not an agent for change. Voldemort is, and yet he's the designated villain. The wizarding world is clearly corrupt to the core, racist, classist, and ill-prepared to deal with crises on their own. Their laws do not treat everyone fairly, and a lot of individuals are neglected or mistreated. That should sound familiar too. Yet this is the system you're supposed to want to preserve.

JK Rowling is going to end up being some old lady in her 90s who still thinks the same way as she does now, and one day we're going to read in the newspaper that we don't have to care about her anymore. And sadly, that's the most thorough way to gradually weed out terrible ideas. Just let them age out of relevance. It takes a long time unfortunately, and a lot of people have to suffer while the process is happening. Let me get this straight: - As the law stands now, rape in Scotland is defined as unwanted penetration by a penis. - Therefore, cis women may never be reported as perpetrators of that crime, as they don't have penises. - Furthermore, before those new laws pass, policemen are probably likely to file perps as men regardless of self-identification (cis men, trans women pre-op, trans men post-op, NBs) - My point is, all this means there's no way to draw from that data how many incidents of trans women rapists actually happen in scotland, as close to 100% of reported incidents would have "man" as the perpetrator's sex - Now, with this new law, we may see an increase in % of "women" as perpetrators, and as long as the definition of rape stands as is, we'd have stats for the % of rapes done by cis men against trans women and others. Doesn't that sound like the kind of statistics TERFs need in order to push their agenda? Unless of course they fear that the truth that rapes by trans women constitute a number way lower than they intend to portray Edit: finished watching the video, and saw that jessie pointed out the same thing.

I'm really shocked that no one at Warner Bros is telling her to shut up. It's so disappointing that JK Rowling could use her voice for good much like her books but instead actively chooses to harm a whole community - many of which are also fans of Harry Potter. It's disappointing and really disheartening... It also hurts others who have been working on Harry Potter-related projects like Fantastic Beasts AND Hogwarts Legacy, who because of what Rowling has said will *also* suffer and that is such a shame, they don't deserve that... and the whole trans community doesn't deserve any of this. It makes me angry, JK Rowling is out of control! Just so so disappointing that this is the person she chooses to be when she could be so much better than this...

Two things to add... One, if these people are arguing that a trans woman being assaulted "shouldn't be pretending they're a woman"... Doesn't that give away the game that to them, women being assaulted is inevitable and unpreventable (unless we completely separate "biological males" and "biological females" and don't accept trans people's transitions), and that cis women's suffering only matters if they can use it as a cudgel against the "trans agenda"? And second... Maybe it's just me, but even if someone commits a horrible, unjustifiable crime, that alone doesn't invalidate their gender identity in any way. Record criminals and victims alike as the gender they want to be seen as, because that's a dignity everyone deserves, no matter what they do to lose the right to other dignities.

Speaking as a cis dude, the whole bathroom thing is ridiculous. Because let's be clear, rapists don't actually need to claim being trans in order to get access to women's bathrooms in the first place. They can literally just walk in; claiming to be trans and temporarily presenting as a woman isn't going to be much of an advantage. It just doesn't make sense as an example. If a dude just wanted to commit assault, he could just walk in no problem and do his thing. And as for the very small minority of trans women that may commit assault, that just makes them a rapist.. it doesn't negate their identity. Even in a non assault scenario, the possession and/or use of a penis doesn't negate self identity. I've heard of plenty of trans women and trans men who either make do or are even comfortable in using their "native" genitalia for whatever reason. It doesn't suddenly "reverse" their gender. Like.. damn. the logic isn't hard.

I hate how the article was very much trying to evoke the kind of response it did. It actively headlines "they'll be listed as women, if they say so" but conveniently forgets that this also goes the other way... And that "they'll be listed as men, if they say so". It actively tries to evoke a feeling of "more sexual assault will be blamed on women now just because trans women are actually considered", rather than "trans men and women are now listed in the part of the research that makes sense to list them under".

Your videos are *so* important as informational and educational pieces, more people *need* to know what she's doing and how harmful it truly is. It's honestly so frustrating and exhausting to have to constantly deal with her BS, but we must keep our heads up, she and her TERF friends will *NOT* keep us down with their rhetoric. Thank you (again) for your analysis, Jessie - making these videos must be incredibly frustrating, but for now, I'm glad you do! I also want to point out that the rigid view of gender this fear is based on - "all men are inherently dangerous, all women are non-threatening" - will NOT protect women (cis or trans), because it never has. We cannot avoid mixed-gender spaces, and we shouldn't have to. Societies that try to strictly separate access to public spaces by gender, ostensibly to keep women safe, are historically also ones in which sexual assault is rampant - because this view leads to men assuming that dominance over women is natural.
