As Harry Potter products continue to be produced, there appears to be a lingering hope among some fans that an entity like Warner Bros. Discovery might buy the rights wholly from JK Rowling. And I'm going to be the jerk who explains why that's not a hope worth holding onto at this point.

George Lucas was actually kind of a genius when it comes to the rights he retained. When Star Wars was first coming out he actually gave up his rights to payment from ticket sales in exchange for all payment from toy sales. The studio assumed all the money would come from tickets and the toys would flop, so they took it in a heartbeat. Needless to say, the toys sold better.

I agree, but I can see some of the wishful thinking behind it. "They'll pay her four billion dollars. Then they immediately turn around and make something legitimate good again that we can enjoy with needing to take a shower or using mental gymnastics to enjoy. It makes eleventy birzallion dollars in return. She eats all the humble pie." It's an absolute fantasy, and I doubt that anyone actually believes it, but I can understand the fantasy.

I still love Harry Potter but I'll be the first to admit how problematic a lot the things in the books are, and well they weren't that well written either. I have never felt a need for more Harry Potter though. Despite being the creator of it, what makes the whole wizarding world really special for me is the fanmade works, fans' creations, not JK Rowling. I haven't reread the books or rewatch the movies in years. And I'm not gonna consume any new official content from the IP either (whether JK is involved or not). Because every possible storylines or what ifs I could think of, an amazingly talented fanfiction writer has already written it. And usually the official never would make something exactly like I'm wishing for, unlike fanworks (more genuine representations, more understanding of the topics discussed, well-reseached approach to sensitive subject matters and so on). I may be oversimplifying it, but if you want more HP, why not just check out fanworks? No profits is going over to JK Rowling. You can still immerse yourself in the magical world. And sometimes with even better plot, writings and character developments. Instead of wishing for official projects untouched by JK Rowling?

Gorge Lucas actually sold Lucasfilm to be able to spend more time with his wife and at the time unborn daughter, 'it was really hard for me to do this' he said 'because I have spent the last 40 years of my life on this' . He had also been writing scripts for episode 7,8 and 9 and in the sale they went to Disney, but then Disney scraped them and started again.

The only way she would sell it is if she became completely broke and had no other choice. I just love that I grew up in a family that were (when I was a child) heavily Christian so much so to the point that I was not allowed to watch Harry Potter or read any of the books. When the first movie came out in theaters I remember my family and I went to see the movie Cats Vs Dogs and the ad for HP came on and I was literally forced to close my eyes by my parents. They were your stereotypical Christians and a part of the driving force against JKR at the beginning of her career. She claimed to stand for the little guy and the children who related to the little boy under the stairs. Making it seem like she cared about LGBT kids because who doesn't feel like that at one point in their journey as a queer youth? Fast forward to now and after all those years of bible thumping. I am now ten years on T and nearly fifteen years out as trans. My family came to their senses after my parents split up and we no longer sat miserably in the church. I was able to come out and teach my parents that we trans people are not evil and are infact deserving of love. My parents are my biggest supporters and I am forever grateful for that, but it's so ironic to see this past icon of freedom of thought and speech become the VERY THING that was working against her all those years. She has become exactly like them minus calling herself a Christian outright. To be honest she allowed herself to fall into an awful crowd of women who all turned themselves into martyrs due to how the working world and the man's world treated them when all they were trying to do was get a leg up in the world. Really they are just a bunch of sad and jaded old bitter ladies now who have too much time and too much money to know what to do with so they spend both of things on making other people miserable just like they felt all those years ago. Congratulations JKR on becoming the very thing you hated back in the 90's and early 2000's. I guess the old saying you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain is too true with her. As I have said since the very beginning of her crap that we should starve her out of any and all attention. When she tweets don't engage with it. When she writes books don't buy them. When she gets involved in new movies or shows don't watch them. Starve her out of attention and money and then maybe one day she will either change her tune or sell HP forever. Sorry for the long winded reply. My coffee is both working and not working today lol.

I find it funny when people say "separate the art from the artist," especially when it comes to J.K. Rowling. I always thought ‘Death of the Author’ was more of an interpretative, ie, the Author’s opinion on a work has no more and no less bearing on the work than someone else’s, as in J.K. Rowling’s opinion of what Harry Potter means isn’t more conclusive than your own. I don’t think it was supposed to mean ‘the Author doesn’t matter, just enjoy it anyway’.

@Samuel Barber Pretty much. It's a literary theory that could be used to talk about things like Dumbledore's sexuality (for example), or a lot of the other issues in-text involving marginalization. It's relevant if you want to talk about the value of the book on exclusively literary terms, but yeah, even that can be tricky when that value is so difficult to extract from the author's platform in dealing with real life issues. I don't think IPs even worked the way they do now when the theory was introduced. Actually, I'm pretty sure they didn't, but I don't know what they were like at the time.

She doesn’t actually need to own the IP to make money. At this point her money makes money. Unless she tanked literally everything she owned in some unbelievably stupid way her money is tied into multiple properties and investments probably. Of all the things she is, stupid isn’t one of them. Controlling the IP at this point controls what gets done with it now and in the future. It’s about that more than her kids never being broke. Her kids wouldn’t grow up broke even if she sold it tomorrow. Also, the books are fully hers no matter who has rights to produce films or TV about it. She gets residuals from the park as as well. There are multiple layers of separate contracts that would have to be wrapped into a HUGE deal to fully sever her ties from Harry Potter.

About Neil, he actually knows trans people and he is always willing to learn and get better. As an artist as well as a person. I had to pleasure to have lengthy conversations with him at multiple times during the last 3 decades. His body of work is a good example for better works by better people. It was great to see him update Sandman not only for screen but also for today. Good Omens Season 2 is going to be great and Anansi Boys is shaping up to become what American Gods sadly wasn't. Don't get me wrong they managed to expand it in good ways and had some great moments. Devery Jacobs, Dana Aliya Levinson and of course Dominique Jackson killed it. Casting Brian Warner sadly backfired as we all remember. The parts they took streight from the source all worked very well. Personally I wasn't a fan of changing the point of view to Laura Moon's for large parts of the later seasons. Anyways what I think of as Neils greatest strengs is that he works well with others and has respect for everyone unless given solid reason not to. We spent two decades praising her and defending her right to have full creative control of the Potterverse. We fluffed her ego and made it abundantly clear, if she isn't involved, we wouldn't touch it. There is no way in Hell she's ever letting go of this thing, for love or money. It's her baby. Her world. Hers. End of. And we, the fans, kinda helped make it that way. She'll cling to that clout and control with all that she has, because it's all that she has. It's her trump card and her crutch. So, whoever is dumb enough to think she'd ever sell the Potter franchise, should just accept that she's going to be involved until the day either she or this IP dies.

She will never let go because it’s the only property that keeps her relevant. The other books she has written only come up in discussions of how she solidified she’s transphobic. Those books hardly ever have mention, because the controversy isn’t hidden. HP keeps her in the spotlight, because it was a beloved property that so many enjoyed before she decided to hell with it, come out as a complete terrible person, and so there’s all the discussion around if the property is redeemable. She absolutely enjoys weaponizing the discussion as a point of personal victimhood. Not trying to diminish her past, but she definitely uses it to say “Oh, woe is me! I’m continually attacked by everyone! Just because I hate transgender people! I can’t get a break! Happy Terfmas, and I’m laughing to the banks with royalties over how victimized I am! Boo hoo!”. It’s really a dark laugh to see the people that used to condemn her works suddenly embrace them. And now that they are her support chamber, she has waddled over to them so far as to brunch with them. Harry Potter is done for me. It really sucks, because I got SO MUCH enjoyment out of it. I had all the books, movies, some merch I purchased, gifts from others, I loved the sense of fandom community, and that’s all dashed because JKR thinks I shouldn’t be able to exist as a nonbinary individual. First world problems? Sure. But I will carry that grudge of, if anything- losing the camaraderie I held with others with loving that fantasy world. It’s forever tainted.

As someone who loves fantasy, these books hooked me from the start. And then the author started tweeting stuff against people like me, against trans women, just shortly after my internal coming out as a trans woman. It was a painful loss and I can't deny that I was a fan, that the series meant such a great deal for me. It is the truth, it's just a fact. But it doesn't mean that I have to stick with it. I haven't bought more stuff, and I won't watch the TV series, I haven't played HL. And whatever new stuff including merchendise comes out, I don't have to buy them. I don't even like merchandise anyway. The only time I bought it was because that item meant something deeply personal to me like finally having a Marauderer's Map prop after creating my own version as a teen. I bought it because I finally had a chance to see up close how close I had come to the prop. Stuff like that. And there are lots of other stuff I could buy that isn't transphobic or where the author saw their flaws like Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. Also, ironically, the author was one of the people to inspire me to write my own stuff and if I want a fantasy story about a secret wizarding society, I can write one myself and, unlike the Author Who Must Not Be Named, I can do some actual research on some topics where she hadn't but REALLY should have!

17:10 Before production began for the first HP film, Robin Williams - THE Robin Williams! - called Chris Columbus and begged to be cast as Hagrid, but Columbus had to decline due to JKR's "No Yanks, Brits only!" rule. I still think Robin Williams would have been a wonderful, pitch-perfect Hagrid. Another, more sinister aspect of Rowling's insistence that HP be a purely British production was that she and Warner Brothers successfully lobbied to change the laws that protect child actors in the UK, so that Radcliffe, Watson and Grint could work longer hours and more days. Thanks to JK Rowling, UK child actors today are at greater risk of exploitation than they were before HP was a thing.

Actually, that was Warner Bros. Rules for child stars then were more rigid in the UK, so Warner Bros was threatening to take the production of the movies to California. The rule change was that child actors could work past 3:30pm, but they had to work less days a week. As for the no yanks thing, I agree with that. Harry Potter is very quintessentially English.

If someone wants to continue enjoy the franchise but not having to do with her there is fanfic and the already done books and movies if one doesn't want anything of those there are other authors. With the announced remake, it got me to realize I didn’t want a remake or any new content even without her involvement. Video games are the only new content that doesn’t feel like beating a dead horse to me, but we’ve got plenty of those already. Hogwarts Legacy, although I haven’t bought it and don’t plan to buy it officially, was very pro-trans and from what I hear good enough that we don’t need another game. It’s over. I’m happy to rewatch the films. If WB wants to do more HP content, release the deleted/extended scenes that are in a vault somewhere. No need to continue to associate with this walking PR disaster. Even reactions to the remake from the general public that aren’t aware of JK’s bigotry are mixed to negative because the films are very good already. WB has enough HP content to profit for a while. If it weren’t for their greed, they could literally do nothing and still make money.

That was the beginning of the end for me when it came to JKR. It's not that I objected to Dumbledore being gay but it just seemed too convenient to announce it after the fact with no indication in any of the books. And then she just kept going...Wizards poop in their robes... and a bunch of other nonsense. Also, after saying Book 7 was the last time she'd write about this world, she then revealed Pottermore and wrote some more HP-adjacent books... At some point, I decided she didn't respect her fans and stopped paying attention to anything she said. I'd pretty much forgotten about her when the Fantastic Beasts movies were announced. Then she joined the cult of TERF-dom. And now, she's dead to me. The end.

I am a writer (not published, may never be). I understand the feeling of possessing something you've written. Even the most hackneyed, trope filled piece of schlock takes a bunch of effort and thought and time to make it. These characters and the world in which they exist are often about as real to their writer as family and friends (although I am not saying anyone mistakes reality from fiction). The best characters seem like real people you could meet, have understandable and relatable motives, and particularly are that way especially for their creator. This is why when any adaptation of a work is made, if its creator is still alive, usually the creator isn't happy with the adaptation, to greater or lesser degrees. And Rowling has shown us how possessive she is.

Agreed. I mean everything toxic about JKR aside, she did write a series of books that are her literary ‘babies’ and I honestly think it’s okay if she doesn’t want to sell it ever and wants her kids to inherit the rights. As hard as I know it is (I was a hardcore Harry Potter fan even in the earliest days of her transphobia leaking through) the only real solution is other books. Instead of expecting her to give up her work, find other things. We made Harry Potter huge as fans. And if fans who are pushing her into ‘selling’ or wishing she would sell or are pirating so ‘they still have Harry without benefiting her’ literally just spent 15 minutes in a book store they’d be shocked how many books exist about wizards and how many wonderful recommendations they could have of EQUALLY good, if not better, book series for there fellow fans. I would love an ‘if you liked Harry Potter read this….’ List to trend.

I agree, Rowling voluntarily selling all rights anytime before her retirement years at the earliest is extremely unlikely. If I replied to any of the speculation with "wouldn't that be nice," it was definitely a wistful acknowledgement that it WOULD be nice, not a sincere hope of the possibility. When all this Rowling stuff started coming out, I was still trying to be a Booktuber, and I considered doing a critical readthrough to point out all the flaws, but I never did. I put my books in a cupboard in this office almost immediately and replaced many of my photos on platforms because they books happened to be visible on a shelf in my selfies. Back in December I packed up stuff to put into storage and those went in the first box. I still own them, but they aren't even in a place that would be simple to access now. And I'm still salty that I'd just replaced one of my books like 2 months prior to the first tweets. My sister had been visiting , she saw I had our hardcover copy of CoS which is her favourite of the series, and asked if she could take it. I let her, using it as an excuse to indulge in a Ravenclaw edition. I've never opened that copy.

A high number of views for the first episode(s) of the first season, but the novelty will quickly wear off, it will be too similar to the films, and the viewership will plummet. I am almost certain that we won't get a third season, and even a second season is questionable. I don't believe the reboot is the safe option, but rather an almost guaranteed failure, and that the influential people at HBO is too blind to see it. It seems like it's all that she talks about, to the point that it has overtaken the posts about her actual literary work. And the worst part is that now that she's associating with people with her transphobic ideologies, she'll find it harder to escape from them now. She's stuck in what's essentially a cult. The best way for her to help her reputation - in my opinion - is for her to unplug from Twitter and such. Let her become old news. There are other witch-school franchises that filled the void for me for a time, but now I'm into scifi and OFMD. :)

I agree that as things stand now, Rowling will not sell. If the trend of HP properties continue to trend downwards she may continue selling HP as that may be the only way anyone agrees to make new HP content. Other option is she may not trust her kids or a trust with managing HP into the future. Part of the pitch to Lucas by Disney was managing the future legacy of Star Wars. That could work on Rowling but in like 20 years, not now. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure she won't sell. But there are scenarios I could see it happening. But they are unlikely.

There is usually a brand disrepute clause that most Hollywood contracts have (which she would be undoubtedly in breach of), but it seems Warner Bros Discovery have no bottom and are just happy to keep actively hiring/paying her and want to avoid a legal battle over that. I guess enough people are still buying licensed merch that Warner Bros Discovery aren't annoyed enough about the losses from people who aren't buying licensed products to go after her for that (which is why nobody should spend money on them).

I'm calling it now: Moaning Myrtle is gonna be turned into a trans woman in this series. Her character is gonna be all about how she's creepy and disgusting for being in the girl's restroom. It's either that, or something else disgustingly and indefensibly transphobic. There's zero chance her views aren't going to be reflected or even directly voiced in this series.

I can think of a few timelines where UmbRowling might have sold the IP. First one, alternate timeline where the rights were bought out early (most likely during filming of the movies). This may have resulted in lower quality movies (think the original PJO or Eragon movies) or an incomplete book series depending on when in the process rights were bought. The second way would be if her thriller series was bringing in just as much, if not more, clout than Potter. At this point, it is not likely yet it is the most likely scenario I can come up with. The final way I can think of off the top of my head, is if Potter is so far into “final death rattles” that she has to completely sell the rights in order for Potter to even stand a chance at staying relevant. While two of these timelines are still physically possible, none of them are probable enough for me to even consider disagreeing with your original argument.

I think this series will be a shot in the foot. Younger gen z dont really have the same nostalgia for HP as older gen z (myself) and millennials do, so that market wont be a profitable likewise with the attachment of JK the conscience ones will stay clear. Then the fans like myself who have the nostalgia but are allies with trans people will stay clear again due to jk. Lastly there is a group who are so nostalgic for the original series will maybe watch ep 1 The only market will be transphobes who will watch to support jk. But will likely not lile the more "woke" reboot elements which maybe inclueded like with gossip girl, starwars, marvel etc. Lastly there are fans who can 'look past' jk like with the video games. Or those who are oblivious to it all and are casual viewers. A small market. I really do not think it will be as popular as once thought. I could be wrong as i avoid HP circles online. Harry potter isnt are profitable or popular as it was 10 years ago. This is like with star wars and the prequels i feel

I think Nostalgia makes people forget this book series starts with 11 year olds in school. Most of the big moments were actually covered in the First film. The ‘extra’ stuff is extra time in class and some extra quidditch matches. And I wonder if these fans, most of whom are older, are really gonna find themselves as engaged as they think they are with a new set of 11/12 year old (likely inexperienced actors) sitting in class…even if it is magical class.

Yeah, JK doesn't seem like the tupe who'd just give away her ticket to world domination. She seems to love the attention, and as long as she is perceived as the "author of the beloved children's book series", she has attention. What I've been thinking is, how many people could be recruited to cancel their Max or whatever it's called subscritions, and to demand to cancel the remake? I don't see any other way of getting rid of JK but to put financial pressure on WB, Max and whoever distributes the series. Someone should put up a petition, or better yet, a pledge you could sign to show you'd cancel your subscription, and it should be a world-wide thing. If the numbers are significant enough, maybe it would have an effect. But it should be organized, because, let's be honest, there are quite a few good shows on Max, and unless the boycott is far reaching, I'm not gonna scrap Max just in case. I want to see the second season of the Last of Us.

Thanks for this reality check... As a lover of reading and writing, it's crazy that I have not read the first 5 books. As someone who's partially blind, I have them on my Audible wish list as well as the other two which I did read, but would love the audiobooks as well since I only read them in print before... Interestingly enough the ones I found were not narrated by Fry, which was what I was expecting. But anyway, I can't see myself actually spending money on the audiobooks to obtain them... I can't even in good conscience use my Audible credit for them. Thankfully, the first one is available to stream, so I added it for free to my library. Meanwhile, I'm also a film score collector and lover. It is so difficult to revisit the scores for the movies without the knowledge of not only her opinions, but her ACTIONS regarding those opinions. The first three Harry Potter scores are some of the best in Williams' repertoire, and Harry himself never got a theme until Patrick Doyle gave him one after Williams withdrew from the franchise due to his EXTRAORDINARY workload of that year (Star Wars III, Memoirs Of A Geisha, War Of The Worlds, AND MUNICH, the last of which he wanted to devote as much energy as he possibly could to it...). I honestly can't find anything in 5 or 6 scores worth listening to. I think they should have gone with Alexandre Desplat for all the rest of those, since what eh did for the final two films is fantastic. But as I said, now, it is difficult to revisit any of these scores without the anguish of knowing these things about Rowling. It has been many years since I watched any of the films. I got The Tales of Beadle The Bard from Audible when they offered it for free one time, and while I enjoyed it, I couldn't help but notice the disgusting charity note at the end, about Lumos and tthe things it SUPPOSEDLY does to help kids... while I'm sure that that organization would NEVER help an openly trans kid. Not sure if that charity even still exists, but it was something I took note of. I even felt guilty for getting the book and listening to it. I did my best to set my thoughts aside while I checked out the stories, but I have not listened to it since.

This is my take as a Nonbinary person, regardless of whether she sells the Rights (she won't): ... I think JK Rowling's gradual fall from Socialist (in her youth) to Liberal Capitalist (when writing Harry Potter), into Right leaning TERFdom is most likely related to starting her charity with the very Consertive Baroness Emma Nicholson, and the very first indication that JKR was turning into a TERF was with her Cormoran Strike books (written, ironically to me, but unironically on her part, under a male pseudonym). So I don't have any problem with reading or opining on the original Harry Potter books - she was still a Liberal when she wrote them. But frankly I had already stopped buying anything related to Harry Potter around the time after the abominable Cursed Child, and the first FB film, when it was obvious to me that the next installments were going to suck, and Johnny Depp turned out to be an abusive a**hole (don't get me started on the farcical travesty of the American Johnny Depp trial - he only won because the American jury were morons). ... I might watch a few of the initial episodes of the new series simply out of morbid curiosity, because I'm already subscribed to HBOMax/Max, but I'm certainly never paying for anything or otherwise watching anything JK Rowling is associated with, and as far as I'm concerned, no one will ever supplant Radcliffe, Watson and Grint. I'm still going to write Harry Potter fanfiction, in which my version of Harry in many of my fics is a Nonbinary Metamorphmagus, because, well, it's my take on the Harry Potter series, not JKR's - not to mention, NB Harry Potter is now also my middle-finger to Rowling.
