JK Wrangler no or low heat fix
My 2012 Wrangler has had poor heat since I bought it a few months ago, the right vents would blow hotter and the left vent was cold, I searched online forums and found a few issues that other people had, like the mixer door motor or lever but mine was working fine. There is no heater valve on these JK's and JKU's! I took thermal images with my SEEK compact XR unit.
After all my research I came to the conclusion that my heater must be plugged. So I drained the anti-freeze system, unhooked the hoses to my heater core and flushed them both ways, hooked everything together and filled the system, warmed up while topping off the radiator, at this point I had NO heat at all, pure cold air, the pipes running to the heater core were also cold so I knew they needed to be bled out. I shut the Jeep off, pulled the top hose off and filled the hose until it ran out then reconnected fast, started the Jeep and BAM!, I had HEAT!! better than ever, all vents blowing scolding hot air!!
I hope this help others with the same issue, saved me from doing a heater core for no reason... phew!!
Also caught a video of the clean up of a rolled over 18 wheeler dump truck on rt 7 in New Milford... quite a bit of equipment to clean that up!
Work done so far:
I repaired the sway bar disconnect.
Found out the clock spring is under (extended warranty through Jeep, so it is replaced free if defective. So is the left cylinder head...
Mountain goat series 3” spring lift and some Joyroad MT200 35” tires. They work GREAT! This is the 2nd Jeep I installed them on (CJ7).
Skyjacker shocks installed

Anyone having similar issue and you've got heat on one side and cools down to the drive side...it's more than likely air in your coolant line. That's typically even more so if you change anything that involves your coolant system (thermostat, water pump, coolant flush and even your oil cooler) Fill it up and make sure all your hoses (top and bottom) along with heater core lines. If all are hot or warm to touch, you should produce heat. Top off radiator while cool and reservoir and run to temp. Make sure fan kicks on at operation temps and crank the heat. If you can press the gas and the heat increases...continue to run while intermittently giving it gas to push coolant through system. After about 15-20 minutes...turn off engine and allow to cool. If the coolant level is low, with no leaks...add more and allow air to bubble out. Once the bubbles stop in the radiator...attach radiator cap and repeat process. Getting the nose of the Jeep up during this process helps as well. If heat temps improve...then what you're doing is working. Continue process until your heat is constant across your dash.

I had been a bit over 6 months without heat. I had been told it was my heater door and it would cost $1K to replace the $30 part due to having my dashboard pulled. After seeing a KZbin video of a guy showing you how to replace the door without pulling the dash I helped my Dad follow the steps. I'm a professional flashlight holder. Anyway after removing the 2 panels under the steering we could see the door actually working so we put it back together and started digging deeper into what the issue was. Thankfully we found your video. We followed your instructions and happily I have that burning hot heat again! I bought my 2016 Wrangler new and now have 201K miles on it. I cannot thank you enough for posting this and by the looks of it helping lots of Jeep owners. THANK YOU!

I always try and flush a heater core hefore going through the trouble of changing it. On these Jeeps, the core can be clogged and the hoses will feel hot too but will have cooler air on the drivers side. Youll probably eventually be changing that heater core. Its the main culprit for this issue. You got the air lock when you unhooked those hoses to flush it. Flushing it is what actually made your vents work again. You saved a lot of people a lot of money by showing them how to do this dude!

Awesome tip!! I had the same problem for over 2 winters in Ontario, Canada. After -10c (14f) and as cold as -35c (-31), it was brutal having very little heat on the drivers side. This was the fix!!, I believe that air gets trapped in that return hose and doesn't come out during a refill or flush, because the high point of the hose is equal or higher then the top of the radiator.

I have a 2012 Jeep Liberty with all the same issues you described about your Jeep. I did this tonight after getting a coolant flush with no luck and finally coming across your video. it made my heat start to work!! But it was still struggling to pull the heat fully so I unhooked both hoses and blew them out with an air compressor like a similar video I watched. I believe doing both of these things was the trick! My heat has seriously never been hotter thank you so much for posting. I never write comments on anything but this was so helpful to me and I didn’t see any comments on different Jeep models so if anyone is wondering if this can work for your Jeep that isn’t a wrangler and you don’t wanna spend a ton of money well it seriously works!!

Thank you MotoCheez, I have a 2012 Unlimited with only 38K miles. I flushed my Heater Core using a sump pump and got a few bits of that casting sand that people are talking about. I also cleaned my reservoir tank which had sludge in it, but not much sand. Flushed the radiator and turned on the petcock valve to drain it. It does take some time to refill and burp the system, you have to leave the radiator cap off until the engine gets hot and the thermostat opens and you have to squeeze the large hose that's on the top right of the radiator to get the air bubbles out. Drove it around a few mins, then refilled the reservoir tank. The last thing I did was your trick of removing the heater core hose and filling it until antifreeze came out of the aluminum pipe. Drove it hwy speeds and got hot air. Still hotter on the Passenger's side, but so much better than before. I need to remove the other heater core hose and fill it as well. I think this summer I'll spend more time flushing the entire system really well to get any bits of sand out. The sump pump is a great way to recirculate flushing cleaner, CLR or whatever you want to clean the heater core out with. It's low PSI. I did both, but didn't leave the CLR in there for long. I think with this crappy design from Jeep, you just need to flush, fill and burp often. I too would like to see a video on how you reversed the lines. Thanks!
@MotoCheez

I never did a video when I reverse the lines but since I did that it's been much better even the heat out of the left vent was always a little bit colder and it still is slightly but it's like way better

That congeal crap in your bucket is from mixing non-Mopar coolant in your system. You can use non-Mopar, but you have to flush it all out first and then use the other stuff. Never mix. Also, there's a (or should be) small value on your thermostat housing for bleeding air after adding coolant. That should prevent this from happening. Good video, thanks.

@@MotoCheezI had the issue resurface this year… flushed out the entire system. It had a lot of sand in the core. While I was at it I picked up a “Peak Flush Kit” and installed the 5/8” T fitting in that hose that you pour coolant into in your video… the T fitting makes it real easy to top off the coolant there at the highest part of the cooling system. It also eliminates fluid loss when trying to reconnect the hose. You can even use a funnel in the T fitting. The kit was like 6 bucks. Worth it. The heat is working better than ever before. Thanks again for this vid brother!!

The heater core gets plugged partially so when you do the flush and then burp the air out of the hose it should definitely work again. If it's not that then it's the blend door or something to do with that. I'm surprised they don't just offer a heater core flush

green vs orange I pulled the top hose off a 2000 chevy and the hoses have a pretty thick dry layer of the orange stuff thicker than my finger nail lining the bottom of the hose that I can flake off. I’ve never seen any other coolant do this. The most important part about coolant is the metal reactions with the coolant and water which is why normal hose water is bad and we “should” use distilled water that everyone keeps in our homes and trunks, right? That’s partially why most coolant directions say 50/50 or your fooled into paying double for premix . The coolant also supposedly lubricates the water pump. I dump and flush the orange garbage not because it doesn’t work as a coolant but because of what it does to the radiator, water pump and hoses. Also if you have a pressurized coolant system with no over flow this causes head gasket leaks so I change those as well.

I've heard not to mix because of the gel.

I have a 2013, no heat. First of all, the blend door motor is not something that can be heard when it is working, at least not in my Jeep. Make sure you actually can see it working (or not working) before you actually take it out and replace it. I thought my wasn't working, but after gaining access, I could see it actually was working fine. The fix was to flush the heater core by back washing it. Next I flushed the radiator and refilled the system. The Jeep seems to have a little trouble self burping, but once it clears out the air in the lines, the heat came right back on, good and hot. It took a while to diagnose the problem and it is a little trial and error before you pinpoint the problem, but my guess is that if your overflow/reserve tank ever ran low on coolant, you may lose heat. And just refilling the reserve tank doesn't fix the problem. You need to flush out the system and put new clean fluid in the system and the heat should come back on. Try this first before letting the stealership get their hand on your ride.

2012 JK sport here..only 17k miles heat just stopped being hot this winter..used to melt your face now I am only getting 91 degree air from drivers side vent and slightly warmer from center vents. I checked blend door actuator it is working properly....I flushed heater core both ways (no sand or gunk came out) could blow air with my mouth through heater core so no restrictions, refilled and bleed system with front end up on ramps with the reservoir that attaches to radiator cap....thermostat opens and upper radiator hose is filled...ran it for 15 mins until no more air bubbles....closed radiator and ran on street for 15 mins came back home and all levels are full...still luke warm heat.....if I IR gun the metal tubes going to and from heater core they are only 105 degrees....I pulled upper heater core hose off of and it was pressurized and squirted coolant. I IR gunned the thermostat housing and it was 199 degrees so the thermostat is working. When the thermostat is closed the water pump HAS to be circulating water through block and to heater core right? where the hell is the hot water going? is it all bypassing to oil heat exchanger and bypassing my heater core?
@MotoCheez
@MotoCheez 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm yeah that's crazy. I'd almost say your blend door was not working right, but you have low temp going into the heater core... Chrysler should definitely recall these JKs for the heater core issues, I see hundreds of people commenting her about it.

I had the same issue and figured to "change" the position of the high point of the return hose just by driving on 2 20-25cm bricks on front tires, and let it cool down completely, then when its cool you open radiator cap and refill the antifreeze. This is a lack of burping the system properly. You get an air bubble in there and you dont get super hot heat and on top of that, you risk burning up your head gasket. The system HAS to be full at all times. If you put your front tire on a ramp that lifts the side of the engine with the radiator cap, then use a no spill funnel to fill the system with coolant WHILE the vehicle is running AND the heat is turn on as high as it will go, it will cycle the coolant throughout drawing in the new coolant from the funnel and at the same time burping out the air bubbles. Sometimes burping a system correctly can take an HOUR, but its WAY better than no heat in a cold climate or a burnt out head gasket. Keep your eye on your coolant levels folks.

Omg! Thank you so much my 2013 has been having this problem for 2 years. It had been overheating and we changed out the heater core using the hack, not by removing the entire dash.($100 vs. $700) Even after that the heater still did the half hot half cold thing. Today its overheating again & I have no clue why. I'm going to flush the radiator & heater core to see if that helps along with everything else you said here. Maybe something is stuck in the lines.

The antifreeze that comes with these Jeeps back then ends up congealing just like in my video and it plugs that heater core up don't mix your antifreeze when you put antifreeze in make sure it's the same type to prevent that in the future after you flush everything

MotoCheez.......I'm working with wife's 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sport about poor heat. She took it to a repair shop and they flushed the heater core and I think the radiator as well. Still low heat on Driver's vent. I'm unclear what was the cause ? Did you conclude that the aluminum tubing that runs to the rubber hoses to the firewall had an air pocket in it and needed "primed" ? I wonder why the water pump didn't push fluid on past the aluminum tubing ? I'm not clear on what the cause of the air pocket was and why the need to "prime" the tubing ?
@MotoCheez
@MotoCheez 5 жыл бұрын
Hi .i have no idea why the air will not push out of the hose, poor engineering I guess, mine still works, but the far left vent cooler than the rest but still hot. I always wanted to put a tiny bleader hose T on the upper hose back to somewhere to keep it siphoned off. Some older Japanese cars had them.

@@MotoCheez I am presently watching it very closely. The blend door lever is operating properly and the plastic gears don't appear to have been stripped. I did find that the black plastic duct tube wasn't secured It could be a defective thermostat. I have done extensive research about NOT mixing OAT with HOAT type antifreeze. Chrysler after 2013 used OAT in their new vehicles. I'm very cautious on what specific type of antifreeze I will be adding to the system. I suppose it would be OK to change the type of anti-freeze but a thorough drain and flush.....just don't mix OAT and HOAT together.....from what I've read.
@MotoCheez
@MotoCheez 5 жыл бұрын
There's a rubber flap on the inside of the blend door that comes loose on some from what I've heard from mechanics. but I don't think that was my problem it may be a little worn so that is why I think I have a temperature difference but mine still blows hot air. Now I definitely don't like to mix the two, but everywhere you look on Preston's website they say it's universal. I don't know but I've seen it coagulate

@@MotoCheez Did you by chance ever loosen the air bleeder valve screw down on the thermostat housing to "burp" the system of air during your troubleshooting process.

No, because with my temp gauge I saw the air up in the hose, the hose near Tstat was hot. they told me at the Jeep dealer the way that they get the air out of the system because those hoses are so high, is a use a vacuum to pull the air out. apparently that doesn't work that well or they don't know how to use it

Ok I’ve done everything in the video guys. I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler. I flushed the heater core. New thermostat. Added antifreeze. Left side not hot after adding antifreeze to the top hose. Actuator opens and closes. Could the Actuator still be bad. Min don’t unless it’s all the way hot and all the way cold turned down. If I put the temperature half way it dose not move at all. Has to be all the way hot or cold before it turns.
@MotoCheez
@MotoCheez 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it could be your blend door causing the issue... If the hoses are as hot as the radiator hose is off your engine then I'd say it is your blend door

The congealing that you are seeing is the fact that you are mixing regular antifreeze with HOAT antifreeze they put in it from the factory. If you look into it, part of the side effects is congealing. You need to flush the entire system and put in HOAT antifreeze. I think this was 2013s and above but can’t be sure.
