"That's why there's more knockouts in MMA than there is in boxing." I remember the match between MMA fighter Connor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather, boxing champ, under boxing rules. McGregor came out strong and scored some solid hits early, but in the end was completely outclassed by Mayweather. McGregor's stance was too wide to maintain for 12-15 rounds, and he didn't have the same sense of stick-and-move, or the proficiency of "slipping" as demonstrated by Sifu Jason here. Mayweather's stance and footwork were more compact, more controlled, and he was much harder to hit solidly. Especially toward the end, when McGregor was tiring out and getting sloppy while Mayweather was hitting his stride. The lesson isn't necessarily that boxing wins street fights, although it could. It's that boxing tactics like compact stances and slipping punches have value, and that gleaning them and incorporating them into your own style can't hurt, and might keep you from getting hurt. Which is the whole point of self-defense. :)

You are so fast with your slips. (And yes, I'm jealous) . I usually don't slip right following my cross, but roll to the left, slip under, and step out to the right. But you've inspired me to add that right slip into my repertoire. Appreciate your great videos, Sifu.
@JKDandWingChun
@JKDandWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Christopher Hinton thanks for watching and best of luck with your training. As for the slipping to the right, it’s a great way to make sure that you’re not leaning forward on the cross instead of pivoting. Real power comes from the torque, which will maintain your balance and facilitate a quick slip back to the right. If we roll forward, though, instead of pivot/torque, the momentum carries us toward the left and that’s why that’s easier. Just FYI. Anyway, thanks again for the great input.

Great lesson. Very useful info. I have a heavy bag in my garage and work out on a lot and you're right, I DO lean forward too much when I punch. No wonder I have so much trouble with the "Bob & Weave".

As far as training your hands to return after a punch, a drill/exercise I was taught was to wrap just the ends of a hand wrap on your hands (one end on either hand using a single hand wrap). The rest is will be on back of your neck and extended along your arms. You will want to have just enough to be able to punch. The idea is that as you punch the wrap will pull your other arm to where it can properly cover you. So it will create muscle memory.

I can get with this...a lot. I like how you don't lean on trapping or chi sao concepts so hard even though your background is WC. I've been studying Karate nearly my whole life and as you said in the last vid I watched of yours, been accused of being some kind of "mutt" because my teacher studied Taekwondo and Jiu-jitsu.

@JKDandWingChun
@JKDandWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
If you have to cover, use your forearms. Parrying, slipping and evasions are better but sometimes you can’t avoid it. Nevertheless, using your hands isn’t a good idea since you don’t have a glove on so the forearm should be used instead. Thanks for watching!

how i understand jkd is intersepting fist (tell me if i'm wrong) i think you sould train with that in mind no avoiding just counter (it's very effective in wingchung how i trained it) so you train new ppl like that? (ofc when further along training you can try other things )
@alwaystrainin6439

That’s the literal translation, and the general principle (includes all arm and leg techniques as well as everything else). Evasion is definitely still part of it, and obviously also interception and not just counter

Quick question, im left hand and if I slip back to my left against a right hand fighter i will get hit by his cross, So should I slip the other way?
@JKDandWingChun
@JKDandWingChun Жыл бұрын
Being “backwards” (southpaw) presents a challenge in avoiding the orthodox fighter’s power hand. You generally need to slip to your right against the left jab and, depending upon the angle and foot position, you might need to duck the cross and then snap back up or weave. Being southpaw you always need to stay vigilant over keeping your leading foot to the outside of his left. Of course, if you’re quick and you’ve got the timing a slip right, then left works too from either stance. Great question and thanks for watching!

Hello. Love vids. What’s the difference between this bad and a regular heavy bag
@JKDandWingChun
@JKDandWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
The sharpshooter is, as you can see, rather slim so it keeps you from opening up too much. Plus, it’s really hard packed - makes it kind of tough on the hands if you use bad technique. In all, it really helps with speed and technique.

We do have online courses (links in the description) for footwork, head movement, parrying and striking. Hopefully one of those can be useful for you. @JKDandWingChun
@JKDandWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. We have other videos discussing it in more detail but basically, insofar as the self-defender is concerned, it’s an unavoidable violent encounter. This separates a fight from a match in significant ways. Chief amongst them is the unpredictability of the time and place. Hope this helped.

This is boxing 101 and yes JKD does Indeed teach boxing fundamentals ..... but boxing don't happen in street fight which only last 30-40 seconds. I'm not gonna get into Bruce Lee's ' ONLY ' real fight cause we all know the lore, but he, in my humble opinion, wanted to perhaps get away from something like boxing which last too long. He basically wanted , in today's terms , to get in and out and let's be clear ..... 1. In self defense, most times it's thrusted upon you and you just go into an instinct mode 2. If you have time to be in a person face ..... separate then throw up hands and box ......you had time to get OUTTA there. Self defense is defense. Yes, boxing is offense and defense but it's not self defense when you could have walked away and the cops start talking. JKD has two primary targets that allow for striking ....... and getting outta there. Great content and you do have great hand speed ..... LoL !!!!!! But it's not self defense. Sorry
