As you said, this is golden. I work a similar structure in my Krav Maga classes. We have this triangle hand and forearm position and it lends itself pretty well for this approach. Of course I'm not a Wing Chun/JKD specialist, so what I do is pretty rudimentary on that front, but the students were able to comprehend the idea. It's good to see that I'm on the right path of things. Thanks of sharing, Sifu Jason. P.S.: I'm an international viewer, my tip for other non-native English speakers is to keep watching and make an effort. Read a lot of materials in English. I like martial arts, guns, video-games and scientific curiosities, I dove deep into those subjects, reading and watching documentaries, that was how I learned English. Music helps a lot too.

I’m new to wing chun and have had the infamous chasing hands/clonk in the face problem while sparring with my old kickboxing club. It might not be a coincidence that it’s a sifu who’s in the know about boxing who is presenting the first plausible tactic I have seen, but what I especially appreciate is that this guard is taken right out of the form without compromising or synthesizing the art. The same can be said for the boxing: you’re not truncating it to make the gongfu work.

Yeah. Absolutely! Dropping that hand all the way down can work but it leaves us WAY too exposed over the top. Been smacked a few times by quick fighters when I’ve done that in the past (😫) so we stick with this for the most part. Thanks for watching and for the input.

Thankyou for another excellent video Sifu. Whilst your wing chun is principle rather than technique-based do you feel the system should be distilled into a smaller number of essential moves like the ones you show in this video and these taught first before moving on to the forms etc so that students have got something they can apply if required from the word go? I realise that you probably teach that way anyway with your background in JKD and boxing so it may not be an issue at your school. The problem is that many schools do not apply the art like you do and it would appear to them that Chi Sao is the be all and end all. In short many of the schools I have attended in the UK have not taught me how to defend myself they've taught me to attempt to be good at forms and chi sao. Stay safe.
@mikeruddell60913 жыл бұрын
I have been teaching for longer than I like to admit, and you have to have some humor, and not take yourself so serious. Keep up "your style" it is fun and still highly educational..

Hey sifu great stuff really love this drill and you make some great points. With the guard, do you always use that shoulder line guard or do you ever use the traditional man sau wu sau guard?
@JKDandWingChun3 жыл бұрын
It depends upon what the other guy is throwing, his angles and whatnot. The key thing, we think, is to use a fence to deny his primary lines and force him to alter his favored attacks. That said, it’s more a case of fitting in with an opponent than a specific guard. Against another Wing Chun style fighter, the traditional guard is preferred but not so much against boxers and MMA fighters. Thanks for the question.

keep making more videos you are awesome at it and like i have said again and again sanda and jkd are both good,better and more effective in self defence and street fighting more than shaolin kung fu and wing chun are fact and true

7:44 grappling has alot of merit, wrestling is a big part even of sword/knife fighting. Spartans, Samurai, always been striking+grappling.That's why the tao says "don't rely on just one takedown" the point is to be able bridge the gab well with striking, when you DO want to grapple
@thevillageyid3 жыл бұрын
So does head movement play into wing chun at all?
@JKDandWingChun3 жыл бұрын
It certainly can - especially against taller opponents who can reach over your guard. The idea is to make your head movement quick and return immediately to your ready position. Combining Wing Chun with boxing in your training can really improve your aliveness and combat efficiency.

I do have poor skills in english (as a brazilian) and YT gives me no subtitles on your channel. Even though, your speech is fully understandable. About the stuff, it is remarkable. This guard is also seen in japanese yawara, but nowadays it´s almost a forgotten matter. For practice, I´ve used it often and it is quite efficient and it is also a law abbiding approach, even in a camera monitored environment. Hands raised, not so aggressive - this can can be as deceiving as Biden´s grin. Also good for Biu Jee - and muscle growth helps nothing on it. Not linked matter but seems that dad bod is gone, huh?

When does your school tend to transition from the JKD Bai Jong to this fence guard? This fence guard seems like one of the fallbacks if someone gets too close to stomp the knee or kick the groin. Unsure if it fits as a sub-optimal entry within the Entry + Follow-up + Finish JKD strategy. Fun content and good as a coordination building drill.
@machida583 жыл бұрын
Don't all good fighters transition between different types of guards? good fighters always keep their hands moving so is to keep their enemy guessing.
@zetareticulan321 Жыл бұрын
When I was taught JKD, the bladed stance with the front arm low is for long range, and it's designed for intercepting with the lead tools. When the fight gets closer, you square up more so you can use both arms for defending and attacking. When the fight gets even closer, you get into a Mike Tyson stance.

Hi, Sifu: I think there is a contradiction in your videos. In this video, you say that you should keep your hands up near your face in the "fence" position. But in an earlier video, you indicated that the hand should drop into a "low block" for a low to mid level punch, because the attacker might have a knife. You said that one should always assume that the attacker is carrying a knife, and you very dramatically said if you keep your hands up near your face like a boxer "your discipline could kill you." Could you clarify?
@JKDandWingChun3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point to bring up because I can see the confusion. As it goes, a Guan Sao (as in the older video) and a Jum Sao here are both deflections of a low line attack. In this case, since the attack wasn’t too low, I was using the Jum from the fence guard to minimize movement and lessen the risk of leaving my head exposed. A Guan Sao is a larger motion so we try and use it only if necessary. Simplicity is the key. The issue I referenced about knife defense is in using a cover as in boxing. That assumes it’s always a punch and will lead to you getting stabbed if not, right? That’s the thing. A “sporting” guard is dangerous in that case due to the over reliance on certain rules. The Jum Sao seen here can still be used in either event, however, so there’s no contradiction between it and the Guan Sao of the previous video. If the attack is too low (especially if you’re much taller than the attacker) the Guan Sao would be more efficient to use. Lastly, thanks so much for the question. I mean that. You displayed the true character of a martial artist by respectfully seeking the truth and asking for clarification on a point that might prove contradictory. 🙏.

Your videos are very good and your practical applications are interesting, but as somebody who isn't knowledgable of Wing Chun, I don't quite see the unique elements of Wing Chun compared with other fighting styles -the straight/chain punches don't appear to have much weight compared to a pugilism/JKD straight lead/cross/shovel hook uppercut etc. The WC forms are parries/blocks that have become a little stylised/ritualised? Your JKD videos are very good too.
