Great advice! I agree 100% I first learnt to box from my father in the '60s. We never used gloves as it was purely for self defense (my dad wanted me to learn how to punch with my bare hands, as that's all I'd have in a fight). Since then I have studied many martial arts, eventually becoming a Sifu. I'm 65 years old, still train 6 days a week and my dad's early boxing is a big part of my system :)

David: I used to not like boxing that much when I was a kid. But then I learned something about boxing, its just about blocking and punching, its about head movement, footwork, and reflexes. And ever since I watched Mike Tyson's fighting style, it really inspired me.

I've dabbled in many different martial arts and have learned from them all, but I've always gone back to boxing. I do enjoy the watching old school boxing, don't follow it today. But I agree, boxing when used correctly is a fantastic for self defence! I always enjoyed sparring (too old to do it now!), not to be flashy but I found it built many attributes such as timing/accuracy/distancing and determination/durability. Always enjoyed fighting close range, short sharp snapping shots. Great videos on you channel.

Great input, thanks. As I’ve gotten up there in years (mid 50’s and counting now), I’m careful in sparring. No one knows how many hard shots to the melon is one too many, right? I’m still blessed to be able to get out there and do rounds every week. I just take it easy. It’s great conditioning and keeps a guy sharp. Not only that, but as you said, it’s great for infighting too, so it’s a great self-defense system if we look at it like that. It’s not merely a sport! Anyway, thanks again for the input…and for watching.

Been training since the early 80's in various styles and systems but always with self defense in mind. Boxing has been in the forefront when it comes to striking . It's got everything you need . Sure you can open up the hands for some advantages but the principals don't change at all. A jab is a jab , a cross is a cross. I only use light gloves too to keep me honest .

Great motivational video! I'm 62 now and been training since I was 7 and still learning. One thing that I have learnt is that rust never sleeps. I know that if I stop...that's it, it's over. So even if I'm not in the mood, I still go to the gym that night and, you know I always feel great when I'm there and tired but happy as I go home. It makes me a better person.

Wow! "Rust Never Sleeps". How profound, ingenious, and poetic. I like it. Never heard that expression before. I'm definitely going to use that as a motivator in my physical, martial arts, and aerobic training. Thank you! Is that a well known, or little known adage, or did you make that saying up yourself? Check it Out! Ciao!!!

I agree with you, but I do want to add something in regards to vertical vs horizontal fist. There are trade offs for each. Your points for vertical are true....but hit vertical requires you to use the smallest bones in the hand. You also gain more power and penetration with vertical as well as using larger knuckles.....but yes, your wrist is at greater risk.....without conditioning. I have about 40 years training and conditioning my hands to punch the way I do. If I tried to punch your way....oh man that would hurt me lol. I would have to spend time conditioning my hands to hit that way. But I would lose power. But it's also fair to say if punching bare knuckle you don't want to hit as hard as you can lol. My boxing is for sport mainly, and with gloves horizontal is superior. I do everything I can to avoid a fight. If I am in one, then things have gone seriously wrong. In which case, I want every advantage I have to survive....I can deal with a broken hand later.....but with years of karate and punching though boards as well as being stupid when I was younger and punching some things I shouldn't have lol, I never broke my hand. Swelling like crazy, but also conditioned. Just like with your WC your fists are conditioned different and are better suited for your style. Think about those muay Thai guys. Have a non martial artist whip their shin into something hard. .....not gonna go well fir them lol. So fist orientation comes down to how you train and condition it

It’s a never ending battle! We all trained to be fighters not athletes but today it’s opposite. I’m currently training fighters and I have to reverse engineer all their previous training or experience. Even my BAREKNUCKLE guy I have to teach them that today’s BAREKNUCKLE is not traditional BAREKNUCKLE and that the techniques and applications are worlds apart . I had to build my own gym just so I could give them the proper training. I’m still getting in the ring for multiple rounds weekly and I’m always asked by new members why I don’t wear hand wraps or why I use old school gloves but it gives me a way to start the conversation. Keep up the good work

Boxing is the TRUE “JKD” art. It’s the one art where you truly develop your own style Every one learns the same four punches ,jab cross hook uppercut The same defense blocks ducks and slips , the same forward backward and lateral movement. And yet you have so many fighters who look different expressing the art

Soo Troo Sifu! Wen I started to move away from Karate style punching to a more WangChun (Live & Die in L.A.) & Boxing style, I never needed wrist wraps; just thin bag gloves if it was a rough canvas bag or makiwara. Proper bone alignment, knuckle placement & timing... the fundamentals! 👊

Great video Jason! I find I get more of a workout hitting bags and jumping rope than practicing forms of Wing Chun. However the applications for self defense of boxing and Wing Chun are somewhat conflicted from a 'style' perspective. Wing Chun's emphasis on 'controlling the center' and attacking targets of opportunity seems more effective than just a barrage of punches (that may not be effective) and footwork. I love the 'uppercut'!

Good morning from Michigan! I was just wondering where my passage about balance in martial arts was going and this video of yours reminded me about all the "tough guy" garbage in Karate. People wanting to or asking their students to hit the Makiwara until their knuckles bleed or worse. How are you supposed to fight off infection, or write, or play the violin with a hand that looks like a foot from callus and years of abuse? Maybe I'm just seeing this all wrong and don't take my training serious enough?
@JKDandWingChun Жыл бұрын
Love this! You’re absolutely right. The whole idea that you should basically cripple yourself in order to defend yourself is preposterous and either the stuff of movies or outright stupidity. Properly understood, martial arts is about defending and preserving, not tearing down. That means balance in life too, not just fighting. Several of our students here are musicians (pianists and guitar players, I don’t know anyone smart enough to play violin LOL) and we always talk about hand-preservation. Everything should be balanced. A self-defense program that ruins our health long-term is just pure lunacy. Thanks so much for chiming in on this because you raised a great point.

Boxing makes a good "linking' skill set that fits well into BJJ and Thai boxing and enhances them. But...I have studied the origins of Boxing and while it often refereed to itself as "the manly art of self-defence" , it developed as a non lethal form of duelling and became socialy acceptable all through the "anglophere' , for even children to settle issue with punching- exactly because it caused almost NO PHYSICAL INJURIES. The worst thing that happened was usually a black eye , or bloody nose or fat lip. as long as you "stood up like a man". As soon as you hit the ground the fight had to be stopped, whether they understood why or not. Having someone on top of you raining blows down when you could not move freely was extremely dangerous (and socially destructive), having some standing above you where they could stomp you was even more dangerous (set out in many criminal codes as a form of 'aggravated assault" the equivalent of using a weapon). -if you want to know how to really fight, reverse engineer these facts (like BJJ and Vale Tudo did.) Maybe you should worry about the wacko right wing "christianians" telling people what to do,more then "woke" nonsense that does not exist. I do a hell of a lot of boxing training because it links my skill sets smoothly together, and is easy and fun to do- But I sure as hell do not rely on it in a real, high risk, street fight with some goon who has 70 Lbs on me...are you nuts?? (oh ..you never been in a real fight like that? then maybe you should stop pretending to know about self defence)... and it also causes a lot of brain damage for comparatively little functional street skills (no, boxing is not good 'self defence...what century is this guy in??). Smarten up, easy on the brain damage, that leads to BS like believing "wokness" is the enemy.

If racists and bigots and aaaholes had gotten a stiff jab earlier, and learned to be decent to people different from them, then there’ld be no need for ‘woke’.
