Great drills to improve your kicks. And you don’t have to start with high kicks to get the benefit. Thank you, Sensei Gardiner.

Thank you, Gardiner Sensei. One reason I envy and admire karatekas is for their kicks (I come from the Wing Chun Gung Fu school), which you have beautifully explained in this clip. I look forward to more videos from you.

Nice drill thank you. Nothing scarier than a good head kicker! Thankfully I never encountered that many though did meet David Pickthill of Kyokushin many years ago when he visited New Zealand. Osu.

What you think about TKD style champering the foot in Kekomi meaning the knee isnt raised straight ahead but more like 45 degree to the direction of the kick? What Ive heard it is better, more natural for hips and creates more power to the kick.

I've actually changed how I do this kick myself since this video, I prefer to chamber with the heel higher, so it's lined up for the kick already, I'm not sure if that's how you mean?

Mawashi geri from outside looks like side kick , it should be more circular and full bottom of feet should be used to hit target and not heel of feet .👍

Is it really necessary that one who learns karate must be able to kick high at 45 degrees. does a karate really have or be able to kick so high? If you can not kick high at 45 degrees are you not good as a karateka? is it not that kicking high open your thigh widely making a space between your standing leg and kicking leg a wide and open space for attack on your thigh and groin? whereas when you kick at just mid-level or just above it you maintain a better balance and not opening you groin for attack?

What's your question? If someone is shit at karate if he can't kick high? - Well no he isn't as it's just one technique Or is it a question whether a High Kick to the head endangers yourself? - Yes it does, but every technique exposes you in some way to another attack. With the high kick it's the groin and your balance primarily, with a right straight it's your liver.

It isn't a necessity, but having the flexibility, balance and strength to kick high makes lower kicks better. Also greater flexibility reduces the risk of injury. Finally being able to kick high as well as low gives you more tools to use when the opportunity arises.

For belt testing kicks are only required to be waist-high. In a real fight head kicks are not practical.
@justinstuart83826 жыл бұрын
No no no. You misunderstand everything. It's just the syllubus. Kicks range from Gedan (groin) through to Jodan (face/head) . Upon grading for certain belts kicks to Jodan may be required. However if the practitioner is somewhat in age or has any disability or injury this will be taken into account and a lower kick may be asked for. Kicking to the head does not necessarily mean a bad Karate practitioner or not. Some of my old Instructor have taught me past 40 years some of them in late 70s now struggle with kick to head but that is undertsandable. As a younger Karateka I could kick way above my head at age 14 now I'm 42 and a few years out of practice so motion is limited . You have to understand it's a modern sport nothing more and like everything has certain limitations up on the individual. It would be like saying David Beckham was a bad footballer after he retires and is too old to play premiere leauge.

My Sensei kicked my ass with waist level sidekicks, waist level round kicks, and simple 1/2 Jab combinations. A high head kick is impressive, but is a little too flashy just like a slam dunk in basketball.

When I try this my leg will not go high enough how do I get it to go higher is it a flexibility problem ?
@jkgardiner4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, It is most likely a combination of both a lack of mobility / flexibility and strength in the muscles of the hips and core. Try to work on improving the range of motion in the hips and lower back, as well as exercises to strengthen the muscles of the waist, lower back, and hips.

JKG Karate thank you for the reply ! I’ll definitely add it to my regimen and continue your instruction.

some nonsense with this wall - take your walls and you fall. It's stiff and heavy... without dynamics and lightness. take 2 kg of weight to one hand and 2 kg ankle weights for one leg, put on a 5 kg vest jacket and just move on.
@stickcel676 жыл бұрын
Lach from Lehistan this is just a training exercise , I don’t think the guy said this was thee only, sole exercise . Fine , if your joints as well as musculature are up to using weights at the end of an extended range of motion., use them. But if your strength and balance are still weak, the wall is a good tool to work the technique and develop strength of the kicking leg, without being held back by the supporting leg. As the supporting leg becomes accustomed to the body movements; the balance improves. Think of ballet dancers, in their daily training, using the barre - and I don’t think anyone would say they have weak legs or poor balance. 🙄
