personally ...I would say i don't prefer mawashi geri strikes with the top of the foot, obviously its valid strike either way of course, I studied sho-rei ryu here in the U.S. and TKD and some various other styles through the years... but i was trained to use the ball of the foot while curling the toes back so you don't break them as it has a more concentrated point of impact...the power penetrates more in a kick to the ribs or stomach rather than the top flat of the foot, and also even if your leg is blocked you still have the reach from the extension of the foot rather than having to extend the top of the foot , you get to the point of power at the centerline a few inches faster due to the closer distance of the striking point. also in sho-rei the mawashi geri ..off of a back leg for instance, we were trained to lift up from the back sooner. for example...our sensei basically said do zen kutsu dachi , place a chair roughly chudan level and in front of the kicking leg.( back leg) .bring the leg up over the chair with the knee pointing to the intended target , that's when you hit the hip rotation/ extension into the kick and return back to the zen kutsu dachi exactly in the same manner over the chair. one of the logical reasons he gave us for this was when you are in a real situation you never will know if you may wind up having to kick over a table, chair, log, etc. it helps train balance, and leg strength as well ..if you haven't ever tried it I would say its a highly recommended addition to your arsenal.

I, many years ago, heard the story that when mainland Japanese came back from Korea, they brought back the roundhouse kick. When they brought it back, some Senior exclaimed, “Don’t accept! Don’t accept!” I think that using the instep is a more recent adaptation for Shotokan. In my observation, the Koreans have used the instep traditionally. In Karate-Do Kyohan (written by Master Funakoshi in the 1930’s-as I recall), the Mawashi-Geri is done with the ball of the foot.

I strongly believe in what you said. So do Norther Chinese Kungfu kicks with instep and fully extended hips and legs while Souther styles hit with ball of the foot/toe tip with rather shortened leg.

I really like the concept of the point of impact being slightly "airborne" so as to get your full weight into the kick but I can imagine that it takes a lot of practice to get the timing right... for now I think I'll focus on trying to kick anything higher than Gedan height without my hips "pinching" me lol - getting old is such fun :)

Sensie, You kick almost like or like TKD. They start roundhouse kick like a frontal kick and then twist the foreleg, as the standing leg and body twist to turn also, to impart a kick with the in-step of the foot to the side of the body or head. I saw also a Shotokan demo of doing a round kick and is done lifting the knee on the side, which like opening the legs on the side and from there kick a roundhouse kick using the ball of the feet as impact point. I practice the round-kick like kicking a frontal side-kick with a curve direction from the rear to the front with the ball of the feet, in-step or the shin as impact point. I used the ball of the feet when I am barefoot so I can impart the ball of the foot to the target, and also the in-step or shin. But I usually practice kicking with my shoes on so I used the tip or toe of the shoe as impact point, then the in-step and the shin.

Hi Yusuke! Nice explanation! What I realized during my training over the years, is that when you straighten the hip joint of the kicking leg before the impact (and there is always an angle), it gives you additional power and distance. And pivoting the supporting leg simultaneously with a knee lifting gives you a super nice speed. Please, explain ura-mawashi and ushiro mawashi. There are many variations as well, but it would be great to know how they are being taught in Japan. Btw, it's a great topic about the kicks, with tips and tricks for them. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

I have been training Shotokan karate for 7 months, and doing a lot of hip and leg stretches before each class, but my yoko geri keage and kekomi are barely at waist level and my mawashi geri is awful. I will practice your technical recommendations for beginner and intermediate mawashi geri, but wondering if there are any good ways to slowly unlock the hips, so i can keep good vertical posture and kick higher over time and practice. Many thanks!

The mawashigeri is a very risky kick if you don't teach yourself to retract the leg quickly after impact (unless you go all in in which case you have to continue striking not to be exposed to the opponent). Some martial arts have specific techniques to catch a sloppy mawashigeri and throw you.

That is not traditional shotokan mawashi geri, shotokan roundhouse is always comes from the side horizontaly traveling into a circle. Shotokan mawashi geri is lifting your kicking leg horizonataly at your side, then kick with spring action returning it back to the side of the body.

Isn´t the version of mawashi geri you´re showing the one for competition? Since the area you´d normally be hitting with, would be the "Chusoku" (or "ball of the foot")? The Knee of the kicking leg is used to aim at the opponent, you only move it to that point, not beyond that. And the hip rotation starts at the point where the forefoot is being snapped our extending beyond the knee to hit the opponent. That is at least what all my teachers taught me. No offence or a reproach. OSSU.

@sassuki
@sassuki 2 жыл бұрын
@@KarateDojowaKu I think you misunderstood. What you have shown is the competition version because you have the distance to lift your knee to the front. Your kick is also faster when done to the front. For self-defense and close range, it is impossible to do the competition version, there is not enough space for that, that's where the standard version comes in, where you lift your knee to the side like so: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWewmHV8i6ydn6c So it's not a "beginner" thing.

@@sassuki come on, in that video your linked there are very few people that could physically pull off a kick like that whilst at that close range. It takes a pretty extreme level of flexibility and to say that it is the self defense version of the kick is hard to believe. Who thinks of doing a round kick to somebody's head in a self defense situation whilst they are standing literally on top of them? Anyone sensible would only do a roundhouse kick from at least arms length and if there wasn't enough space would either create the space necessary or would do a different technique (like strike with knee)
