In this video I will be talking about how to create the separation from the upper body and lower body when it comes to adding more rotation in the downswing. I feel like a lot of players have the wrong idea on WHEN to initiate rotation and HOW to initiate rotation so I will be answering these questions and also show a drill that will help you feel these things out.

Pressure-turn-arms. One thing that might be obvious but is not explicitly said, is that that rotation is actually done with your feet and the pressure you built. It is not roatating with your hip, but with your feet really pushing the ground. Understanding this really started to change how I move.

The last point is so key ie letting the chest rotate into the arm. Most people try to stop the chest to create separation rather than the arms. Doing these loads the muscles as late as possible so that they release closer to impact.

The coaching tip to push your bicep into your chest really helped me tremendously create some lag and get in good position. I’ve never heard anyone mention that tip . It really worked and gave me a feel have not felt in my swing transition before Thanks a lot !

Agree completely with your technique here. For me, this is how I am able to generate whip starting at the top of the backswing....with loose hands. As I start to move in the opposite direction, it allows the club to start the whipping motion into the downswing. My challenge is to keep arms and hands loose.....and it really helps with long clubs.....generating the power and contact needed to get real distance.

Great explanation. For myself I wait to start downswing that my backswing is complete and from there moving as a block creating NO separation. I’m also lacking wrist action on top of this “move” explaining my lack of distance especially with driver. The added feeling of the bicep on the peck is a nice feeling to "kind of" insure this is happening. This is a must for me to achieve in the off season. Thanks!

Enfin !!!

AWESOME Drill JKM! I'm a 10 handicap and I've struggled with sequencing the hip rotation my whole golf career. I have a bad habit of sliding the hips laterally and no matter what I try it keeps coming back. This drill has helped the most out of any I have ever tried. It's got me striping the ball consistently and it's only a matter of time before I'm in the low single digits. Big Thank You to you!!!

Also, the infamous “STEP Drill” … that helps with this sequencing too, right? That is where you step forward slightly just before reaching the top of the backswing … emphasizes the “feel” of pressure into the left leg, AND initiates the downswing rotation. When you said you’ll share a drill, I thought for sure this was it 😉 More good stuff, as always, Jonathan 👍🏻 Keep up the good work.

I’m yet to master the sequence of timing with this key move in the golf swing. I start this at the end of my backswing, but will try your drill to see if it helps! This year I got back into golf after a few years away from the game. (Crazy I know!) I’m addicted like never before, and apart from one lesson with a pro, I have re tweaked my swing by watching KZbin instructors like yourself. And you are one of the better ones to follow imo. Long story short, my biggest gains have been by sound advice about getting my weight forward and clearing the hips on top of staying straight and not laterally moving in the backswing, have all improved my game immensely. I now get sweet compression on my irons! And one bit of advice you gave once has always stuck with me, and that is at your completion of your golf swing, you should be able to lift your right leg ( for right hander) and be able to balance on your lead leg! I often do this at the range😆. Anyhow thanks for your continued advice and helping us amateurs get better at golf.

For me, I like to feel a slight sway forward (overloading my left need too) until I'm in the slot (arm parallel to ground) at slot position, I pop my left hip hard or as fast as possible. I feel like if I do pop my left hip prior to reaching the slot position then I spin out of my swing. So I'm right there with JKM 100%. Great video on this motion.

This really clicked for me when I stopped thinking about it and just swung the club freely without hitting a ball. And the harder you swing, the more you will see your hips naturally firing/turning and that is the feeling you take to your swing.

another good video from JKM....there is not enough time in 12 min. to discuss all the details how important this is to pullers who only partially rotate, and right hand throwers who don't rotate at all. I have been recently hitting the ball without spin just using my hips as the engine (I confirmed this at the LPGA tournament in California talking to some Korean players)

Great video. You do a great job of explaining concepts, in ways that are very digestible and easy to understand. I really appreciate that you talk about feels and subtle nuances and you seem to seek to leave nothing for misinterpretation. My one question is: amidst the focus of getting separation between lower body and upper body, what would be an ideal feel for the head? Is the head a stable fulcrum or pivot point that only moves or moves forward following the release?
@JKMGolf
@JKMGolf 10 ай бұрын
The head will definitely move more forward after release. As your body continues to rotate your head will move forward. You don’t want to keep the head totally behind the ball into the finish

I have long respected you as a very good golf teacher. I can't help feeling anxious about any kind of dipping or as you put it "pressure" building in the left leg on the beginning of the downswing. My personal concern with this advice from you as well from others is how to return the clubhead to the correct height at impact, fearing thin and fat shots.

This is Erv, Irene's husband. I have double hip arthritis and cannot rotate my hips more than just a few degrees. I have swings that hit the ball very straight but I hit behind the ball 25% of the time because I cannot shift my weight well. I have tried pre-weight-shift swings such as having my knees well-forward at address while trying to have my upper body well-back at address, but this shortens my swing tremendously. I like your mini-swing idea and will try that. I am 69 years old and besides maybe trying over 300 swings in my life, I have gone through a hundred teachers thoughts and you are the best teacher I have ever seen! I wonder if you have any ideas of how a person with limited hip mobility should swing?

That sequencing is the toughest thing to learn for sure. I know I do that squat move too late because I don't do it until I get to the end of my backswing where I pause slightly. It seems so natural to do it that way. I have been consciously trying to do it before I get to that pause but its freaking hard to do. That drill is great because you sort of do the pause at Position 6 & then do the squat move as you bring the club up. Should one also stop quick as in the swing hard-stop quick drill? This seems to be similar, or does that matter.

Good explanation but you all be careful about getting your lead arm pinned across your chest in the rotation. It may not show up in your iron swing but with a longer driver it can cause your club to push out of plane and make your swing too steep.
