Well said - a complete Scripted Interview - all carefully scripted from what I see by Jaguar Landrover Totally agree it should have been done with an outside source - someone like Richard who knows what questions to ask - without the MD knowing the answers How many times has he said ... nice question and then looks at his iPad ????????? .

The thing is Richard, if people in London and SE and other major cities cannot readily insure your cars for a reasonable price then you are not going to sell any vehicles. I didn’t get the sense you have quite grasped the gravity of what is going on here

Exactly. He doesn't seem remotely concerned. If he isn't careful he won't have a company to work for, as nobody will buy any new cars. No insurance = No new cars.

Spot on. I had a 2019 RRS Autobiography Dyn. Insurance was reasonable between 2019-2021. Now a 2023/2024 RRS is either uninsurable or getting quotes between £6,700-£38,000 - absolutely obscene. Unless the insurance is sorted, no one in London or S London will be able to purchase these cars

Paddy answered the questions very well but some of his words where very shallow to say the least... i.e. It's not a recall..? Seriously...does JLR think we are all stupid..? The hardware's easily hacked by amateurs...'The software was not available at the time of build'...What 2018..? That's just bollocks, Tesla's theft figures clearly show otherwise...JLR have known about this for years and so have our underfunded Police and local Gov, which should shoulder some responsibility as we live in a country which has more ANPR and CCTV camera's than most and still JLR - Police can't find or remotely disable a stolen 2 ton vehicle over the air or Identify or track stolen JLR parts but can send you a fine when 1 wheel enters a bus lane or bumper hangs over a crossing...therefore this is A: Sign of the times, B: A megalith who was slow to act. C: Perfect PR storm for JLR. P.s. Thanks Richard for all your hard work on this matter but I fear this is not going to get any better for the next few years for owners of older - late model vehicles.

As previously posted, he is speaking a lot of pendular reproductive organs, JLR insurance would not insure the 2021 RR sport I purchased from a main dealer in Nov 23, and I am unable to find out if this vehicle has had the security update, JLR as a brand you are a waste of time, this was my 4th Range Rover next car will 100% not be this brand.

Just a point who the hell wants to steal a Tesla? They are simply not worth enough in the markets supplied by nicked Range Rovers. For an analogy nobody steals a cheap watch, they steal Rolex’s etc.

You bring up a brilliant point about the police sending you a fine. Sad but True. Anyone with any common sense will read between the lines of what was said by the JLR Rep, its exactly what I would expect from any large corporation, How come nobody ever mentions Tata?.

As I mentioned previously, I've already abandoned 30+ years of JLR ownership and traded in my RR for another brand. If things improve then yes, I would like to think I may return. But now I've tried another brand, I have come to like it. This only proves that it's simple to loose a customer, a bit of work to keep one but very difficult to win one back.

what do u drive now? I was looking at an I pace and wanted one for a while but the security with JLR is scaring me. I do like Audi (q5 or 7) but thieves like audis too.

A lot of side stepping and politically answering questions. No taking responsibility for their failings. The only way we are all going to get change is to stop buying their products. And also nothing said on pre 2018 models, which are the most vulnerable. And nothing on their own insurance refusing to insure pre 2020 vehicles. Just pure waffle from JLR. Edit: I have since seen the full interview, and basically if you own 2018 or less you are screwed. They are almost waiting for it to age so that they dont' have to do it. This interview has made my mind up, I'll go elsewhere to another brand.

Things that JLR need change or fix ,the keyless entry and the wiring in the car , far as I have see they can cut a hole in the car above the passenger back wheel access the wiring and get into the car , so JLR need to move the wiring into the middle of the car , please JLR FIX YOUR CARS OR NO BODY WILL BUY THEM .

I have three Landrovers. Two classic and one discovery five. The discovery will likely be my last Landrover due to insurance issues and their inability to be able to offer emergency fixes and prompt servicing (my drivers window will have broken for three months by the time they finally fix it).

Why should I have to double lock? Surely on a 100k+ car you should only have to click once to fully lock the car.

Single lock if you have dogs in car, double arms alarm and dead locks doors so they won't open even if window broken as I understand it.

Every model with keyless start should be sorted and secured by Landrover upgrade regardless of year if only to make our insurance cover realistic

Thanks Richard for sharing this video. Good to see the CEO of JLR actually speaking about this problem and what they are doing about it. The premiums will only come down once the insurance companies see the actual historical data of reduced thefts and not before.

Yes it all sounds lovely. I have a 2017 Discovery Sport and had it about 3 years, with keyless entry, but I have to turn it off. I feel that because JLR are only going back to 2018, they are just devaluing my car even further. I would love to trade mine in for something newer but I can't justify or afford the 65% depreciation on what was already a second hand car. I am one one these loyal Land Rover owners.

Firstly, thankyou Richard for all the hard work you are doing around this. As for the replies, the bloke should be a politician. Sidestepping most of the problems and not giving straight answers. I have only this week tried to get insurance on a new RRSport. I live in Hertfordshire (not central London but close enough), mid 50s, and their own insurance completely refused to quote. Cheapest quote I could get was £9k, and only if I fitted aftermarket Ghost/Pandora. My RSQ8 only costs £1.4K a year. He either really doesn’t know what is going on the real world, or is just hoping this issue will go away. If I had a 10min Q&A with him, I certainly wouldn’t accept half the answers he gave. It’s a real shame as I’m a real fan of the mark, but if I can’t get reasonable insurance, what’s the point?

I just tried to get a quote from JLR for their insurance, no claims, no convictions, driving for over 20 years, kept in a locked garage. All i got was that they cannot offer me insurance at this time.... so who do they offer it to?

JLR are not calling it a recall, as if they did, then it would mean the car has an inherent fault. If they admitted it was an inherent fault, then they would be liable under Consumer law. But it clearly IS a recall.

Not really recall though is it. A recall only ever comes out for safety related items like they have right now for the Evoque and Disco Sport EPAS bolts since that effects steering. Some mug stealing your car isn't a safety defect on the vehicle. It's no different to a service instruction where you carry out random updates if they've found software issues. Either way, this theft issue should have been resolved years ago.

Credit for getting JLR on You Tube. Whilst I sympathise with the plight of Land Rover brand owners, and have respect for the work you and other You Tubers are doing to highlight the plight of Land Rover product ownership, there were 130,000 cars stolen in 2022/23, a 28% increase on the previous year, including 2 models of the Ford Fiesta in the top 10 most stolen vehicles. Whilst I am a slave to the You Tube algorithm after looking at Range Rover Velar reviews (thinking about my next car), I haven't seen any You Tubers addressing the rate of overall car thefts or including lower priced models (Kia, Ford, Hyundai) which have also increased. Of course, I understand that most You Tubers addressing this issue, also own Land Rover products and so will represent their own experience. Despite this, car theft affects everyone through increased insurance premiums regardless of whether a Land Rover product owner or not. On this basis, it also seems unfair to paint this issue as Land Rover specific, rather its a keyless entry issue right across the industry, and a wider social issue of limited police resources to investigate vehicle crime. There were 130,000 cars stolen in 2022/23. That's 8 cars stolen each day in each of the 45 police force territory's in the UK. Assuming it takes at least (a generous assumption) 1 day to process those 8 thefts (Paperwork, CCTV review, tracking, finger printing etc), there's another 8 thefts, and so on. As a final point. I live in London and decided 10 years ago to buy a Honda CR-V on the basis that the average speed in London is 8mph and I couldn't care a less when some drives into it, its gets scratched, dented and thrown about in London's narrow streets. Despite this, I have wanted a Range Rover Velar for years - its the perfect match for what I want and need. Unfortunately, I have decided to stick with the CR-V as owning a premium brand in London seems just too stressful right now. There's nothing quite like a theft deterrent than a grossly under powered, atrociously handling 'Comfortable Runabout Vehicle'.

Mine isn’t had a 2024 discovery sport for 4 weeks. My previous car was a 2020 Evoque the insurance on that was £395 pa the new car cost me an additional £16.41 for four months

I have a 2017 Rangerover Vogue my existing insurer has doubled my last years premium, however, this is still cheaper than most comparison sites. I have now disabled "keyless go" I have a Landrover Tracker fitted and the car is kept behind electric gates. I held on the phone for nearly 2 hours to speak to someone at the insurance company and was told that these measures would only reduce my premium if the underwriter's acknowledge the benefits and extra security of my actions.

That’s the thing, there is zero incentive for underwriters to reduce premiums. They know they can brush off any extra measures taken so that they can charge us all more to cover the perceived risk of LR products.

Thanks for sharing and continuing to ask the awkward or uncomfortable questions of JLR. Are the answers to some of those questions convincing and would make me want to take the well known risks with JLR products?……………….regrettably, the answers in this instance is a resounding “No”. I don’t trust snake oil sales people and he came across as such a person……….”it is not a recall, but a software update”?…………mmmmmm. If JLR is so confident in its £10m investment, why is the brand not taking a greater lead in insuring its own brand of vehicles at a reasonable price? There was a lot of talking around the problem with a sweet mouth about the high quality of the questions rather than putting forward tangible proposals to resolve the unfolding problem Police and policing is all very well but they are not there to babysit JLR vehicles………….must do better might be an overused term, but in this instance the shoe fits quite nicely. 😉

I had been considering buying into their brand but the idea has lost its appeal and nothing they are saying is reassuring or swaying me which is a shame…….may revisit the idea in a few years when all this stuff is historical

This theft issue has a simple solution: First of all, JLR are perfectly aware of how these cars are being stolen. JLR can ask electronic module manufacturers in Taiwan, Japan, USA, Germany etc to come up with a redesigned ignition module that cannot be easily manipulated by the thieves and offer a brand new pair of keys to their customers and charge them something like £300 -£500 and fit them at their own site. When mass produced the ignition modules will cost less than £50 including a pair of keys. Just give customers appointments for one hour and replace them. It creates jobs for JLR as well.

JLR already has robust security built in. They build them so badly that when they do get stolen, they won't get far as it will breakdown within a 10 mile radius. It's very clever but slightly inconvenient if it doesn't get stolen...

Totally missed the point about cars are actually being stolen to be stripped for parts to fix the 10,000 cars currently held on forecourts awaiting back-order components because JLR totally buggered up their new parts warehouse …. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Unlocked at the point of theft? Yes, because they can unlock the car via a simple signal booster or hack into the wiring loom in the boot lid to unlock and code a new key to take the car. Nothing like trying to make it look like an issue of owners not locking their car.

Keyless entry is a pain.. keys roll around in the car get lost... bmw had it right with a keyless system with a slot, but give people the option to have key in the column...

What a lot of shallow answers. I heard nothing about my 2016 built RRS Autobiography MY17 first registered in February 2017? When are you going to issue a “security software complimentary enhancement” for this model. The phases answer was mumbo jumbo…. Thanks..

There was a change in the electronics architecture around the 2018 MY, which is probably the reason. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t do something though.

What i still dont understand about all this is that if the main issue is "keyless entry theft", then why aren't insurers differentiating between JLR vehicles with keyless tech and those without. Our 2019 exoque and 2021 Velar have not been recalled for a security upgrade, probably because they don't have keyless tech fitted. It would be interesting to see if the theft statistics are more granular to allow a comparison of keyless vs without.

Your vehicles do have the keyless tech fitted. Basically, if you do not need to physically insert a key into an ignition barrel to start the vehicle it has keyless tech fitted. Your vehicles have not been recalled because JLR are not recalling vehicles - that costs them money. If you’re lucky they’ll be updated at the next service, but no guarantees.

With a 10m budget you can write an awful lot of sophisticated software.. I can only suggest they need to revise that scope and deliverables and understand the value of what they are doing because the current circumstance is rather a 101 basic error of design philosophy. He needs to look at the low hanging fruit if some of the solutions offer this, but finally implement an augmented view to cover the entire solution. As for the technology not being previously available is absolutely technically speaking nonsense. His real problem came from cost versus benefit and as typically with most ELT teams cost was the winner. great video by the way all the correct challenging questions.. rather weak on the responses, demonstrating they really haven’t yet planned a way out of this mess.

I'd guess the 10m includes the rollout, i.e., update cost per vehicle for all affected vehicles.

Change the law ie you steal a car you get your hands chopped off..it would stop after the first televised ‘look no hands’…my mate lives in Dubai he says you can leave your keys in a car or your wallet on the bar both will be there the next day..

He forgot to mention that thieves can also cut a hole in the tailgate to access the wiring, that’s a design flaw. Insurance “offering” and a security “upgrade” alone isn’t enough but JLR seem loathe to admit that aftermarket security is required.

So this guy is trying to say. It’s not just JLR cars that have gone up in insurance, but all cars. Okay I’ll take that. But a quote for my RRS is £7k, a quote for a same reg, spec Audi Q7 is £2k…… so is it the insurance companies or is it JLR?

Thank you for all your efforts you are putting into this Richard 👍 anyone wishing to renew their insurance and over 50 try Saga, just had my renewal for the next year for £616 for a 69 reg Sport so i snapped their hand off. I guess there are cheaper insurers with the situation at the moment, but i'm happy with that and didn't feel like paying £200 a month to JLR. I'm guessing Mr McGillycuddy has a free Range Rover from JLR with no insurance costs. As i mention free Range Rovers, they should be handing the keys over and gift one to you as a good will gesture for all your doing for them. Kind Regards Jon 👍

Keyless go has always been a stupid idea, and as a former Range Rover customer, I didn’t give a toss whether the key was in my pocket or in my hand. JLR is just completely wrong on this.

Some very careful wording in the responses to the questions. I can understand the need to be careful in how you reply but equally I don’t feel confident that JLR really is understanding. Shame as my insurance is still going up with no changes to personal circumstances. JLR insurance was the most expensive quote I have had!

£10m is frankly not taking this seriously for a company of the size of JLR. Equates to approx 3,500 vehicles that are currently getting whacked with annual insurance bills of £2.5k+ Not much point having a “great product” if you can’t insure the damn thing. As others have said, they do not care about the older cars if they can keep flogging the new ones at £150k+ to Middle East buyers…

World class soft soaping here! Bought 2.0 SD4 HSE Discovery from new, through approved JLR dealer, fully serviced on schedule, average miles driven conservatively, good balance of short and long trips. Two engines, two windscreens, one transmission rebuild, two door handles, and two inlet manifolds 5 years later, all of these known problems with thousands of customers, again no recalls. Nothing to see here! Resale values crashing, not accepted as trade ins by other manufacturers or even JLR. Still nothing to see here. This video was obviously about security, however there are people out there hoping that their Land Rovers will be stolen!! I have found they only really care when you want to buy a new car…that is what JLR thinks of customer loyalty.

Fair enough - JLR are FINALLY taking action and remediating their cars with poor security after years doing/saying nothing. My question is - what is JLR doing for their clients who have already been a victim of horrible thefts in the past? These people were probably clueless about the vulnerability of these vehicles and have had the huge hassle factor of dealing with the insurance companies, police, lost excesses and higher premiums. It’s crystal clear the OEM security of these vehicles was sub standard and should never have left the factory

I would have liked to have seen an admission that maybe the feature wasn't secure enough to start with. For cars which cannot be updated they should post them branded faraday boxes.

My Jlr insurance is only £30 cheaper than my best quote. It's ridiculous. If they can't take the burden, why would other companies do better? The company should be ready to take some of the costs until confidence is restored.

The man is removed from any sense of reality. 😂 People with multi layer security are still getting their cars stolen. Our “clients” love keyless entry so they can keep the key in their pocket. Ok, but how do you double lock it then? Of course they won’t admit it’s a recall, or that would be an admission of a flaw in their security.

I made a comment somewhere else, the brass neck of him saying majority of cars are unlocked at the point of theft. As in some way trying to blame owners. It’s almost like the organised gangs can’t open the cars by various means. Is that not what this is all about in the first place?

ITS A RECALL!!! And why doesn’t the car lock securely without having to double press. Why doesn’t it do it on the first press. JLR won’t give me a quote so why do they expect other insurers to do so. It looks like they’re concentrating on their high valence vehicles for updates. Where is the update for my 5 year old Discovering Sport which I’ve had from new.

I found this PR confection just slightly less convincing than the infamous BBC interview with Prince Andrew. JLR have to start supporting the whole of their customer base, not just those with newer models.

The only reason JLR are taking action now is because sales of new JLR cars are drying up because people cannot insure them. For many many years JLR senior management have buried their corporate head in the sand and ignored the problem but continued to drawn huge salaries and bonuses…………..

I feel that you are right. I was sufficiently aware of the security weaknesses of Range Rovers when I bought my RRS in October 2020 to immediately disable keyless entry. It isn't a new problem for JLR customers, but it has become a problem for the company.

Ownership package.........over £2k to insure a 2021 P400e through JLR, £100's more in tracker and JLR connect subscriptions.....it's not very attractive at the moment trust me. If I could run away from JLR right now I would, but the plummeting value of the vehicle makes that exceptionally painful to swallow. Can't see any JLR featuring on my next car list at all, it'll be a Bentayga or DBX

My wife as a 2021 RR, after watching this so called interview, both reading off their ipads and his scripted responses, as left me completely deflated. I began to wonder if the title was incorrect and this guy worked for Ford or someone. If this is the attitude from the top then until every car is in a dealership unsold and the others have been stolen, seems not a lot is happening to help to protect them.

I have contacted my rr dealer to ask when my wife's 2019 rr evoque is due for the security update, they told me that have no idea wait for a letter. Also went onto rr website for insurance quote she has 9 years ncd drives less than 3000 miles pa Parked on drive way. Rr would not insure her. Never will be buying rr again

Just been in to look at buying a car and insurance going directly to Land Rover is stupid. This isn’t true where they are trying to help owners the dealers are screwed if you his carries on. To the degree that a 4 l v8 AMG equivalent is over £400.00 cheaper.

I have a 2019 Velar and was told this week by JLR Customer Relations that my car is NOT eligible for a security upgrade any time soon and could not give me a date. JLR For goodness sake get your act together. First of all re imagine rubbish given out by the last CEO and now the Insurance issue is turning customers away.

Tried getting Insurance on a Brand New RR whicj ordered two years ago, and contacted a whole market broker and they couldn't even get a quote, contacted five other companies and the same thing.. Lastly, JLR wouldn't insure either with 9 years NCD clean licence etc !!! Looks like JLR CEO should be looking for another job with his nonchalant attitude towards this MASSIVE Issue ! I will be cancelling my order and moving to another Brand ! Shocking how JLR are treating this problem... The car salesman at the dealership have the same shocking attitude towards this too... Stating they are surprised I cannot get even a quote ! Enough said...

Use of the InControl App??? Despite buying a Jaguar approved used XE, the vehicle is still “registered” to its previous owner, I’m not going to pay a dealer to unlock something that should be free to set up. Sort your older cars, including the diesel Ingenium timing chain issues - the lack of care and support for the medium age cars is what is ruining your reputation and, in future years, your business

Also the pricing of spares, accessing parts is a joke my PDF went had to wait 8 weeks they blamed the moving to a new distribution center and still they are blaming this months later. but generally they are only interested in the new generation of cars. I have been an owner for of RR for over 18 years and about to trade mine in and it wont be for another one.

As a long time owner of LR/RR, the most disappointing thing is that JLR have allowed this situation (theft/insurance/reliabilty) to manifest itself into what we see today. Listening to the interview it is clear that JLR focus is on selling new cars and only honouring the 3 year JLR warranty agreements. For those of us (who have significantly contributed to the brands success over the years by our support) that do not fit this criteria, then we are (unfortunately) on our own. JLR Directors/Management have sleepwalked into a huge problem and seriously damaged the brand. Only time will tell if the brand will ever return to its former glory.

Richard- have only just tuned into your channel this last few weeks. I have a 7/22 RR velar and the insurance renewal in April. I am currently with direct line and pay £58 pm. I was today a little spooked when I spoke to another RR owner in a petrol Station who came uptime and said expect my renewal quote to treble. I have therefore just been into JLR insurance and obtained a quote of £66 pm which is very reasonable all things considered.

That's becouse its a NEW CAR - ( Theres a LOT of Loyal Range Rover Owners out their with cars they have had since brand new - LOYAL Customers ) Try getting a JLR quote on a 2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018 Range Rover or Discovery - NOT A CHANCE, we have tried and it says NO - and remember we are in a beautiful countryside location with 42 years no claims - no anything - full clean licence etc...... We have also tried on the JLR quote system to insure our £183K Range Rover - rang them up and their JLR Insurance only goes upto a car value of £150K !!!!!!!!!! - Really - so whats ther point of purchasing another FFRR full loaded - when no one will insure it even JLR Insurance ?

No word on vehicles older than 2018. For a brand that prides itself on being about luxury, and "taking care of you", I can't see myself buying a JLR car anymore.

Only ‘taking it seriously’ now people are cancelling orders.. a joke really. They’ve loved it for years as it just increased their sales with clients replacing with another one. Even if it can’t be stolen the damage that is done by a thief is so great that an insurance claim will need to be made, so a lose lose situation. A shame they’ve allowed this to happen for just so long. Will take years for the insurance premiums to come down again.

Keyless entry is specified on cars by the various manufacturers why does that make consumers lazy or can’t be bothered? They are just using the technology provided ? It like saying people are lazy because they use the auto setting on their headlights because they are too lazy to switch their lights on when it gets dark
